I commented a bit on Banasura here - suffice it to say that there's nothing to suggest that he was there at this swayamvara. Or else, w/ his 1000 arms, he'd have picked up that bow like a twig.

Aside from the fact that Rama & Laksman were in their royal garb, and were that way since they left Ayodhya, they were very much participants in the swayamvar: they didn't go there just to admire Mahadev's bow.So what on earth is Sunayna saying that they're just here to watch? All the rulers present there took serious part in it, and Rama came up after everyone had failed.

But not b'cos he didn't want to, or wasn't a participant.

yeah an invitation had been sent to Ayodhya like it was to all other places

thanks for the update

The only invitation that was sent to Ayodhya was the one after Rama broke the bow. It's not that Ayodhya wasn't invited - it's just that Rama & Lakshman already happened to be there w/ Vishwamitra, so Janaka didn't take the trouble of sending any invitations. Who was he gonna invite - Dasharath?

After Rama broke the bow, Janaka sent the invitations to Ayodhya for Dasharath to come over for the marriage.

As per Ramayan, the scripts, who was invited in for the Swayamvar?

I'll just go by Valmiki here. When Rama & Lakshman came there w/ Vishwamitra, there was no swayamvara as such. The condition was that any man, on any occasion, who managed to string that bow, could then get to marry Sita then & there. So there weren't invitations issued to anyone. (Balakand, Sarg 66)

So when Vishwamitra came there w/ Rama & Lakshman, Janaka simply told them about several kings who had tried in the past, & failed. He told him that if Rama succeeded in stringing that bow, he'd give Sita to him in marriage.

I have no idea what the other books say, such as Kamban, Krittivas, Adhyatma, Tulsidas, et al.

Yes, according to Valmiki, there was no opening ceremony, ceremonial march past, no grand finale.

In fact he has not described the swayamvar, because there was none. 'Swayamvara' indicates the bride ability to choose her groom. Sita didn't have much of a choice because her father had pledged her to whosoever broke / strung the bow.

In Valmiki, on Vishwamitra's asking, Janaka showed them the Shiv Dhanush. Janaka also mentioned no one- not the devas, siddhas, yakshas, were capable of lifting the bow.

Rama opened the lid of the box within which the bow was placed and asked permission to hold the bow. Vishwamitra and Janaka readily agreed.

Rama effortlessly lifted the bow, strung it and broke it right in the middle.

So whatever the serials have shown / are showing-about a grand spectacular arena, Sita entering with the varmala, kings competing with one another, Janakas' anguish on seeing them fail, Lakshmana's outburst, - none of this is in Valmiki.

And- to spoil the party further, there's no mention of Rama and Sita meeting in the Puspa vatika.

TUlsidas however milks this event for all its is worth. All the above mentioned incidents find inclusion in Ram Charita Manas. In his version, Sita does pray to Gauri to make the bow feather light- so that Rama may break it.

Even during their chance encounter in the Eden Gardens 😆, Tulsidas ensures that Rama and Sita do not look directly into each other's eyes. When Rama is looking at Sita, her face is turned away and when she looks at Rama, he is staring somewhere else.

I don't know about other versions. But Tulsi Ramayan describes Swayamvar in detail with an emphasis on Sita's feelings. There are some beautiful lines on how Sita felt when one king after another was trying to lift the bow. So the lines describes her anxiety where she did not want anybody to succeed. How tears were gathering in her eyes, but she was making an effort not to let them fall. The lines compared her effort of trying to stop her tears with actions of a stingy guy who tries his best to save his money and not let go of it from his hand.

Vrish is right that Valmiki Ramayan shows that Vishwamitra brought Ram and Lakshman to Janak's palace where Ram then broke the dhanush. I believe that Sita told this story to Anusuya in a flashback. I think there was a swayamvar (or something similar to it) where princes (not Ram and Lakshman) were invited and they were unable to lift the bow. Then after some time, Ram and Lakshman came and were shown the bow where Ram decided to string the bow. So my understanding is that there was a swayamvar, but Ram and Lakshman were not part of it. They came afterwards where Ram was successful.
