you have given two versions. So maybe both are correct and this Gajasura is the son of Mahisasura.

May be Brhmaji is going to give boon to Gajasura, then both the versions are different, so there can be 2 Gajasuras. But if Brhmaji is going to meet Durgam, then there can be 1 Gajasura. Only Brhmaji can solve this mystery, let the epi. air, things will be clear😆

I had read.about Dudhumbi asur some days back in a site where it was mentioned that he was the son of Maishasur.He challenged Yama for a fight but Yama told him to go to Vali.Vali then fought with Dudhumbi and killed him.Dudhumbi's son Mayasur wanted to avenge his father's death so he challenged Vali for a fight.Vali and Mayasur were fighting in the cave and Sugreeva was stationed at the mouth of the cave.What happened later is the history.
But it wasnt mentioned whether this Maishasur was the same asur killed by Ma Durga 😕
Maybe two different asurs of the same name Dudhumbi could have existed

Vali was during Ramayan, so in Dwapar Yuga. Mahishasur was killed in Sat yuga. May be both Mahishasurs are different.
