Parvati pointed down to the city of Madurai
"Madurai" exclaimed Shiva'. "that's where the king Malayadhwaja is praying to me and performing a sacrifice in hopes of getting a son. In fact I am very pleased with his devotion and am going to bless him with a''"
"With a daughter" interjected Parvati
"Daughter? No, Parvati, he wants a son" clarified Shiva.
"Why?" queried Parvati, calmly.
"Why, obviously, he wants an heir for his kingdom, someone to rule after him, to carry on the Pandya dynasty'"
"And obviously, these things can't be achieved with a daughter" replied Parvati, her voice loaded with sarcasm.
"No, certainly not" answered Shiva earnestly, missing the sarcasm completely. "How can a woman rule over a kingdom, lead the troops into battle, dispense justice and...and..." Shiva suddenly realized who he was talking to and his voice faltered.
"Go on, Lord...what are the things a woman cannot do?" asked Parvati with a challenging smile.
Shiva knew when he was lost. He shrugged his shoulders and asked "What is it you have in mind, Parvati?"
"My Lord, if you think King Malayadhwaja should be rewarded for his prayers, then bless him with a daughter- A daughter who will rule the kingdom, lead the troops into battle and dispense justice."
" Because...'" Parvati took a deep breath and continued "...that daughter will be Me"
"Parvati, will the people accept you as their ruler?"
"They will have no choice"
"Parvati, it's going to be very difficult" Shiva said thoughtfully
"For me, Lord?"
"No, for me" replied Shiva quietly
Parvati felt her throat constrict. She looked down, unable to look her husband in his eyes. Shiva could see the turmoil in his wife's heart and gripped her shoulder tightly.
"Parvati, my pain is very insignificant right now. You have a momentous task ahead of you. May you be successful"
Parvati looked up at him with tear filled eyes.
"Parvati," said Shiva more gently than she had ever heard him, "it's time to grant Maladhwaja his wish. It's time for you to begin your new journey."
Parvati bowed down and touched his feet with worshipping hands.
Shiva placed his hand on her head by way of blessing and lifted her up.
"My Lord, I am only going to be physically separated from you. But my conscious spirit will remain here with you, in Kailash. In my every waking moment, through every fibre of my body, I will remain connected with you. In my thoughts, words and actions, only you will be present" Parvati said, wrought with emotion.
Shiva nodded thoughtfully and stretched his hand forward, indicating her to leave.
Parvati turned for one last look and prepared to descend.
"Parvati, come here" Shiva's voice rang out. Puzzled, Parvati went near him.
"Bend down" he ordered. Parvati bent forwards.
Shiva said "Parvati, I know you better that you know yourself. If are constantly reminded of me, if you are going to have only me in your thoughts, you won't be able to stay even for a second away from me, let alone achieve your purpose. It will be best if you forget me altogether."
Parvati opened her mouth to protest but Shiva held up his hand. He pressed his thumb on her forehead, at the space between the brows, as if to stifle the ajna chakra
"When you descend on Earth, you will have no memories of your true nature, your divine persona or your life in Kailash. You will be endowed with extraordinary qualities, but you yourself will be unaware of them."
"But... Lord..." protested Parvati "Am I not going to retain any memories of Kailash? ...Of the time we have spent together... Of our relation...?
Shiva shook his head "That's the best way, Parvati"
Parvati was stunned, "Lord...but if I am unaware of who I am, then...what if...suppose...imagine...terrible..." her voice trailed off incoherently. Parvati could not even bring herself to voice her greatest fear.
"I know what you are fearing, Parvati. When the time comes, I will myself come to claim your hand. Don't worry- You are mine- no one else's -whether here in Kailash or on Earth below" Shiva smiled mischievously- the same smile, Parvati thought, which had captivated her years ago.
Enshrining the smile and the face in her heart, Parvati prepared to leave.
"Meenakshi'" Shiva called out
Parvati turned to look back.
"Take care"
