Excellent question I wonder why I never thought of that before. I always thought that artists to make krishn more attractive show him in blue color.

Because both Krishn and Shyam means dark or black so I thoguht he must be sawala but actually he wa blue colored. Here is the reason why.

As in more traditional depictions of Krishna, dark blue represents the vastness of the sea as infinity.

The term Krishna in Sanskrit has the literal meaning of "black" or "dark", and is used as a name to describe someone with dark skin. The Brahma Samhita describes Krishna's complexion as being "tinged with the hue of blue clouds", and he is often depicted in paintings with blue or dark-blue skin. In murtis, Krishna is more commonly portrayed as being dark skinned or black. For instance the Jagannatha deity (a form of Krishna, whose name means Lord of the World) at Puri is black in colour, with his brother Balarama and sister Subhadra, both having much lighter complexions.

The color of the Personality of Godhead, Krsna, is described here as nilotpala-dala, meaning that it is like that of a lotus flower with petals tinted blue and white. People always ask why Krsna is blue. The color of the Lord has not been imagined by an artist. It is described in authoritative scripture. In the Brahma-samhita also, the color of Krsna's body is compared to that of a bluish cloud. The color of the Lord is not poetical imagination. There are authoritative descriptions in the Brahma-samhita, Srimad-Bhagavatam, Bhagavad-gita and many of the puranas of the Lord's body, His weapons and all other paraphernalia. The Lord's appearance is described here as padma-garbharuneksanam. His eyes resemble the inside of a lotus flower, and in His four hands He holds the four symbols: conchshell, discus, mace and lotus.

Different people have different views about Krishna's complexion but I believe him to be blue like ocean and sky as they symbolizes vastness infinity and very very attractive but don't go by what people's views are about this always go with the information provided by our scriptures as they tell the facts
