Minakshi- very informative post. I would like to add some more details. The full story is more interesting and I hope they show it on screen.
Here's the full story:
It was the night of mahashivratri. Every one on Earth was busy worshiping the Devon ke dev Mahadev. Parvati, too was offering her puja to the Lord. Shiva, being Ashutosh, was pleased with Parvati's devotion and asked what she wanted in return. Parvati asked Shiv to reveal to her the knowledge and secrets of Yoga.
Shiva agreed but wanted it to keep it a secret. They went to Kashi and and there in the dead of night, beside the river Ganga, Shiva imparted to Parvati the knowledge of raja and hatha yoga.
Shiva didn'nt realize that they were being overheard by someone else. That someone was a fish who had positioned itself close to the bank in order to hear Shiva's lecture. Parvati, observing the fish asked Shiva to bless it. The fish became a human and came to be called Matsyadendranath. He later on founded and codified the principles of Hatha yoga.
This story appears in
hatha yoga pradipika. In fact the opening verse/sloka is Some thing like this:
I bow to shiva who taught the secrets of Hatha yoga to Parvati by whose grace it has come to earth.
The ashanga yoga was also propounded by Shiva to Parvati - which was later on codified by the great sage Patanjali.
Patanjali himself is considered to be the avatar of Shesha nag- who on Vishnu's command , took birth in Chidambaram, was able to view Shiva's Amanda tandava and was fortunate to be instructed in the principles of yoga by Shiva himself.
