HAR HAR MAHADEV

Story behind song embedded:

A Pandiya King invites Hemanatha Bhagavathar, a very notorious musician to his court in Madurai. The Bhagavathar is an arrogant man, who had made many a king give up their kingdom because no one in that kingdom could match him in the art of music. In the Pandiya kingdom, there is a very great devotee of Shiva, who is also very famous for his musical talent. He is charged with competing with the Bhagavathar. This Shiva Bhakth knows about the Bhagavathar, and gets anxious, just in case he becomes the reason for the Pandiya king to lose his kingdom to the arrogant Bhagavathar. He surrenders himself to Lord Shiva.

Lord Shiva takes the form of a woodcutter and comes to the Pandiya kingdom. He seeks shelter in the night at the same guest house where the Bhagavathar is put up. He then starts singing, saying he needs that to go to sleep. The Bhagavathar is astounded by the singing coming from the Lord, and is even more astonished that for a moment, when the music stops, the whole world comes to a standstill. He comes out and asks him who he. Lord Shiva replies that he is just a woodcutter who happened to listen to the Pandiya musician singing once and picked it up. The Bhagavathar now gets scared thinking that if a guy just listening to the Pandiya artist sing is capable this talent, he will be no match to the guy. So he flees the kingdom to everyone's joy. This way Shiva teaches a lesson to Bhagavathar, that pride even with the greatest talent is no good.

This episode is part of the Tamil movie Thiruvilayadal from Thiruvilayadal Puranam, which expounds the stories of Lord Shiva and his devotees. This particular episode has 3 or 4 great songs in the movie. The following is the one Lord Shiva as the woodcutter sings to teach the Bhagavathar a lesson. Hope the subtitles help you understand.
