The Mythology_____________________
It is celebrated every year on the fifth day of the Indian month of Magh (spring season)[january to february].
Traditionally during this festival children are taught to write their first words; Brahmins are invited for lunch; ancestor worship (Pitr-tarpan) is performed; the god of love Kamadeva is worshipped; and most educational institutions organize special prayer or puja for Saraswati.
The color yellow also plays an important role in this festival. People usually wear yellow garments, Saraswati is worshiped in a yellow dress, and yellow sweets are consumed within the families.
In Firozpur it is known as "Kite Festivalz". Children buy Dor (Thread) and Guddi or "Patang" (Kites) in huge quantity to fly. People from all around the world come to enjoy this festival.
Vasant Panchami has a specific meaning, Vasant means spring, whereas Panchami means the fifth day. And Vasant Panchami falls on the fifth day of spring As per another mythological story, this day Lord Rama ate half tasted grapes of Shabari and to commemorate this day, the festival of Vasant Panchami is celebrated.
The festival is celebrated by the Indian diaspora based at Nottingham, UK, every year under the aegis of the socio-cultural group Jhankar-NICA. Saraswati Puja on Vasant Panchami 2013
Vasant Panchami day is dedicated to Maa Saraswati, the Goddess of knowledge, music, arts, science and technology. Goddess Saraswati is worshipped on Vasant Panchami day. Vasant Panchami is also known as Shri Panchami and Saraswati Panchami.
People worship Goddess Saraswati to get enlighten with knowledge and to get rid of lethargy, sluggishness and ignorance. Traditionally during this festival children are taught to write their first words. This ritual of initiating education to children is known as Akshar-Abhyasam or Vidya-Arambham/Praasana which is one of the famous rituals of Vasant Panchami. Schools and colleges arrange pujas in the morning to seek blessing of the Goddess.
Purvahna Kaal, which falls between late morning and early afternoon, is considered to decide Vasant Panchami day. Vasant Panchami is celebrated on the day when Panchami Tithi prevails during Purvahna Kaal. Due to which Vasant Panchami might also fall on Chaturthi Tithi.
Many astrologers consider Vasant Panchami as Abujha day which is auspicious to start all good work. According to this belief whole Vasant Panchami day is auspicious to perform Saraswati Puja.
Although there is no special time to perform Saraswati Puja on Vasant Panchami day one should make sure that Puja is done when Panchami Tithi is prevailing. Many times Panchami Tithi doesn't prevail whole of the day on Vasant Panchami day hence we believe that it is important to do Saraswati puja within Panchami Tithi.
DrikPanchang.com suggests Saraswati Puja time during Purvahna kaal while Panchami Tithi is prevailing. Purvahna kaal falls between late morning and early afternoon which is also the time when most people perform Saraswati Puja including schools and colleges in India.
Saraswati is the hindu goddess of knowledge, music, arts and science. She is the companion of Brahma, also revered as his Shakti (power). It was with her knowledge, that Brahma created the universe. She is a part of trinity "Saraswati", "Lakshmi" and "Parvati". All the three forms help trinity "Brahma", "Vishnu" and "Shiva" in the creation, maintenance and destruction of the Universe.[1] The Goddess is also revered by believers of the Jain religion of west and central India.
Saraswati is known as a guardian deity in Buddhism who upholds the teachings ofGautama Buddha by offering protection and assistance to practitioners. She is known inBurmese as Thurathadi or TipitakaMedaw , in Chinese as Bincitian, in Thai as Surasawadee and in Japanese as Benzaiten. In the East Indian states of Bihar, West Bengal, and Odisha, Saraswati is considered to be a daughter of Durga along with her sister Lakshmi and her brothersGanesha and Karthikeya.
The name Saraswati comes from saras (meaning "flow") and wati (meaning "she who has flow"). In Telugu Language she is also known as chaduvula talli, Sharada. In Konkani, she is referred to as Sharada, Veenapani, Pustaka dharini, Vidyadayini. In Kannada, variants of her name include Sharade, Sharadamba, Vani, Veenapani in the famous Shringeri temple. In Tamil, she is also known as kalaimagal, Kalaivaani, Vaani. She is also addressed as Sharada (the one who loves the autumn season), Veena pustaka dharani (the one holding books and aVeena), Vaakdevi, Vagdevi, Vani (all meaning "speech"), Varadhanayagi (the one bestowing boons) and many other names.
In addition to her role as a goddess of learning, Saraswati is known as "Druga" in reference to her role as a guardian of Earth. "Druga" refers to her fighting off Drug, the name for a female demon in ancient Veda, from the Sanskrit root druh, "to be hostile". The name Druga is made of Sanskrit dru or dur ("with difficulty") and ga or ja ("come", "go").
Saraswati is strongly associated with flowing water in her role as a goddess of knowledge. She is depicted as a beautiful woman to embody the concept of knowledge as supremely alluring. She possesses four arms, and is usually shown wearing a spotless white sareeand seated on a white lotus or riding a white swan.
According to writer Sailen Debnath, "Saraswati is the Goddess of learning; and the meaning of the goddess in association of all the symbols with her signifies that if a learner really understands and pursues the connotative and denotative meaning of the goddess, he or she can easily advance in acquiring knowledge. The realization of the Goddess makes the learner ready to embark on the world of knowledge and wisdom.Debneth identifies seven primary characteristics and symbols of the goddess that relate to her role as a goddess of knowledge.
In the Rigveda, Saraswati is a river as well as its personification as a goddess. In the post-Vedic age, she began to lose her status as a river goddess and became increasingly associated with literature, arts, music, etc. In Hinduism, Saraswati represents intelligence, consciousness, cosmic knowledge, creativity, education, enlightenment, music, the arts, eloquence and power. Hindus worship her not only for "academic knowledge", but for "divine knowledge" essential to achieve moksha.
In some Puranas (like Skanda Purana), she is the sister of Shiva (Shivaanujaa).
The original (spiritual) forms of devas including Saraswati are present in the spiritual world:
In the Devi Mahatmya, Saraswati is in the trinity of Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi and Maha Saraswati. She is depicted as eight-armed.
Her dhyana shloka given at the beginning of the fifth chapter of Devi Mahatmya is:
Wielding in her lotus-hands the bell, trident, ploughshare, conch, pestle, discus, bow, and arrow, her lustre is like that of a moon shining in the autumn sky. She is born from the body of Gowri and is the sustaining base of the three worlds. That Mahasaraswati I worship here who destroyed Sumbha and other asuras.
The goddess Saraswati is often depicted as a beautiful woman dressed in pure white, often seated on a white lotus, which symbolizes that she is founded in the experience of the absolute truth. Thus, she not only has the knowledge but also the experience of the highest reality. She is mainly associated with the color white, which signifies the purity of true knowledge. Occasionally, however, she is also associated with the colour yellow, the colour of the flowers of the mustard plant that bloom at the time of her festival in the spring. Unlike the goddess Lakshmi, Saraswati is adorned with simple jewels and gold, representing her preference of knowledge over worldly material things.
She is generally shown to have four arms, which represent the four aspects of human personality in learning: mind, intellect, alertness, and ego. Alternatively, these four arms also represent the four Vedas, the primary sacred books for Hindus. The Vedas, in turn, represent the three forms of literature:
In Goa, Maharashtra and Karnataka, Saraswati Puja starts with Saraswati Avahan on Maha Saptami and ends on Vijayadashami with Saraswati Udwasan or Visarjan.
Saraswati Puja calendar:
In the southern states of India, Saraswati Puja is conducted during the Navaratri. Navaratri literally means "nine nights", but the actual celebrations continue during the 10th day, which is considered as Vijaya Dashami or the Victorious Tenth Day. Navaratri starts with the new-moon day of the bright fortnight of the Sharad Ritu (Sharad Season of the six seasons of India) during September'October. The festival celebrates the power of the feminine aspect of divinity or shakti. The last two or three days are dedicated to Goddess Saraswati in South India.
In Karnataka, the Shringeri Sharadamba Temple is a revered pilgrimage spot. There are other Sharada temples also. The Mysore Dasara festival includes Sharada puje. During the Navarathri season they keep various dolls on raised platforms this arrangement is called ("Gombe koorisuvudu"). Pustaka puje and musical instruments puja is also done on Saraswati pooja day.
In Andhra Pradesh, the Gnana Saraswathi Temple in Basar, on the banks of the River Godavari is considered only one of two temples in India dedicated to the goddess.
In Tamil Nadu, Sarasvati Puja is conducted along with the Ayudha Puja (the worship of weapons and implements including machines). On the ninth day of Navaratri, i.e., the Mahanavami day, books and all musical instruments are ceremoniously kept in front of the Goddess Sarasvati early at dawn and worshipped with special prayers. No studies or any performance of arts is carried out, as it is considered that the goddess herself is blessing the books and the instruments. The festival concludes on the tenth day of Navaratri (Vijaya Dashami), and the goddess is worshipped again before the books and the musical instruments are removed. It is customary to start the study afresh on this day, which is called Vidyarambham (literally, "Commencement of Knowledge").
In Kerala, the last three days of the Navaratri festival, i.e., Ashtami, Navami, and Dashami, are celebrated as Sarasvati Puja. The celebrations start with the Puja Veypu (Placing for Worship). It consists of placing the books for Pooja on the Ashtami day. It may be in one's own house, in the local nursery school run by traditional teachers, or in the local temple. The books will be taken out for reading, after worship, only on the morning of the third day (Vijaya Dashami). It is called Puja Eduppu (Taking [from] Puja). Children are happy, since they are not expected to study on these days. On the Vijaya Dashami day, Kerala celebrates the Ezhuthiniruthu or Initiation of Writing for the little children before they are admitted to nursery schools. This is also called Vidyarambham. The child is made to write for the first time on the rice spread in a plate with the index finger, guided by an elder of the family or by a reputed teacher. The little ones will have to write "Hari Shri Ganapataye Namah" and recite the same to mark the auspicious entry into the world of education. This is considered a memorable event in the life of a person. In some parts of Kerala bordering Tamil Nadu, Ayudha Puja is also conducted during this period.
Saraswati Puja in Bengal
Although people of all age celebrate this auspicious occasion with great enthusiasm, it is particularly more popular among the students. It is perhaps because Saraswati is the Goddess of education. Almost every school and college observes Saraswati Puja. The girls are clad in yellow colored sari and the boys are in essentially Bengali attire of Dhoti and Punjabi. The Saraswati Puja in West Bengal is an inseparable part in the life of the people.
Saraswati Puja in South India
Ayudha Puja falls during Maha Navratri and it is popular only in South India mainly in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala. Ayudha Puja is done on Navami Tithi during Navratri. Most of the time, it falls on Maha Navami during Navratri. Ayudha Puja is also known as Shastra Puja andAstra Puja.
Historically Ayudha Puja was meant to worship weapons but in its present form all sort of instruments are worshipped on the very same day. In South India it is a day when craftsmen worship their tools and instruments similar to Vishwakarma Puja in other parts of India.
In its modern form Ayudha Puja has become Vahana Puja when people worship their vehicles including cars, scooters, and motor bikes. During Vahana Puja all sort of vehicles, which are in use, are decorated with vermilion, garlands, mango leaves and banana sapling and worshipped. Most significantly during Vahana Puja a white pumpkin is decorated with vermilion and turmeric and smashed in front of the vehicle as a custom to get rid of all sorts of evils.
In South India most calendars mark Saraswati Puja along with Ayudha Puja. However according to most Dharma Shastras Saraswati Puja during Navratri is suggested during Purva AshadhaNakshatra.
Saraswati Puja: The Valentine's Day for Bengali guys and gals
The Greeks and Romans have their Muses, the nine sisters who inhabited Mount Helicon or Mount Parnassus. Homer and Virgil prayed to the Muses for literary inspiration. For Bengali boys Saraswati Puja is no study day for friendship celebration.
BENGALI people have their own muse, Saraswati. Every year Bengalis worship Goddess Saraswati on the day of 'Vasant panchami' meaning the Festive Spring, which is actually the fifth day of the Magha month of the Hindu Calendar. As per Hindu mythology Goddess Saraswati, the daughter of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, was born on this day. She grew up and established herself as the Goddess of wisdom, learning and supreme knowledge. Bengalis are devout worshippers of Ma Saraswati, and quite naturally they naturally acquire literary abilities, verbal skill and creativity.
The first mention of Saraswati occurs in the Atharvaveda around 1000 BC and the most ardent followers of the goddess Saraswati are the Bengali who regard her as the mother of the Vedas. Saraswati puja is normally enacted during the morning hours and mantras and slokas are chanted. Sandlewood, ghee, incense sticks are used. White is the colour preferred by Saraswati, basanti is also permitted. Saraswati holds Veena, an Indian string and books in her four hands and sits on a white lotus, which is a symbol of purity. The white swan is her carrier or Vahana and symbolizes righteousness. Among other fruits 'kool' or Plums are particularly offered. Bengali boys and girls do not touch plum before offering to Saraswati which is later eaten as Prasad. 'Don't eat plum. You will fail in exam.' ' this warning still clings to our memory. Today, we understand how plum sellers suffer economically for this.
Nature is decked with all beauties. Aamer mukul or the mango buds begin to occur in trees and this makes the trees beautiful with possibilities- the darling buds of mango.Kichidi or hodgepodge is the other fantastic item served on plates after the long starvation for the puja to the deity. It is ever delicious and tasty. We become nostalgic for Khichdi, aloo or brinjal fry and chatni' wow. Wonderful menu of saraswati pujo ! The other memorable thing is the vasanti or orange yellow clothes to mark the advent of spring. In earlier days this vasanti colour was made at home from the stems of the Shiwli flower by a natural process and clothes were dyed in this colour.
This is a fabulous day for the students. No study and Jack is not a dull boy. Nowadays, Saraswati Puja has become a day for friendship and enjoyment. Students go to schools and colleges in the early morning and take prasads. This is also a good opportunity for speaking their heart to each other. The joyful moments make them ecstatic and sometimes they find time for love making. For many, Saraswati Puja day becomes a Bengali Valentine Day. The first ride together and the first strolling together bring the two hearts nearer and closer. Guys and gals are all in a mood of fantasy with no studies and all friendship. In the happy and holy hour of the morning and daytime with pressure of 'no study', only Valentine's Day can be observed with guys and gal being in such as ecstatic mood.
" Yaa Kundendu Tushaara Haaradhavalaa, Yaa Shubhravastraavritha
Yaa Veenavara Dandamanditakara, Yaa Shwetha Padmaasana

May Goddess Saraswati, who is fair like the Jasmine coloured moon and whose garland is like frosty dew drops, who is adorned with radiant white clothes and on whose beautiful palm and arm rests the Veena, those throne is a white lotus, and who is surrounded and respected by the Gods beginning with Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Maheshwar, protect me.
