And there has been, afaik, a Ramayan done as well for Western audiences, except that instead of showing as an ancient classic, it shows up as a futuristic movie. I don't recall any details, except that Rama was played by Jeff Rector.

And yeah, I've seen Peter Brooke's Mahabharata. Even allowing for the multicultural cast, which takes some adjusting, too many of the events were shot out of sequence. Like Ghatotkach's death was shown as the first thing that happened in the war, as opposed to day 14. The DVD that I watched was damaged @ the end, so Karna's death and beyond was not clearly visible.

Also, @ the start of the movie, a boy is shown asking 2 elders (presumably Vyasa & Ganesh, who's shown here as fully human) about his origins. It's totally unclear from the movie that it was Janamejaya - at the end of the movie, he bows to Uttara, but the context is extremely vague.

But yeah, those are the 2 Western cinematic attempts to show any Hindu mytho story that I'm aware of. If Kal or anyone knows of others, that would be interesting to know - and see, particularly in English.
