First Durgama has to appear from Parvati when the Deavs did Ya Devi sarva bhuteshu... stuti.

Durgama is fair, then Parvati's body turns dark, is called Kaushiki, is also known as Kali.
I seriously hope they don't mess up with this DSS's story.

I thought that from Ma Durga, various goddesses emerged to fight the asuras - including Mahakali, Chandi and some others.

Ma Durga herself emerged first time when everybody wanted to kill Mahishashur, and she was created not by Parvati, but by Mahadev, Narayan, Brahma and a host of other deities. They all handed her their main weapons - the trishul, the sudarshan, the vajra, et al, and asked her to kill Mahishashur.

The second time Ma Durga was invoked was when Ganesh was beheaded, and on this occasion, it was Parvati who invoked both Ma Durga and Mahakali, and sent them to destroy the devas & ganas. So Ma Durga did emerge from Parvati on one occasion, but not all of them. (I'm not sure whether different sources have it differently - they probably do)

Durgama first emerged from the combined powers of all Gods & Devatas, they presented her various weapons. Lion was given to her by Himavan. She is worshipped as Aadi Shakti. After killing Mahishasur, she promised Devas, whenever they are in problem she will come to rescue them, she merged in Parvati.

During Shumbh, Nishumbh's time as per Devi's promise, Devas did her very famous stuti, " Yya Devi sarva bhutshu..."
At that time Paravti came ther for Ganga snana. She asked the Devas whom are they worshipping. Durgama appeared from her saying they are worshipping me. After Durgama emerged as a fair form, Parvati turned dark, that's one reason she is called Kali.
As Kali she had cut Chand, Mund's head & presented it to Durgama, who told Kali, she will be also known as Chamunda.
All the Deva's shakti came to fight eg. Narsimhi, Varahi, Brhmani, Aindri etc. Kali drank Raktabeeja's blood to finish him.
Durgama killed Nishumbh, that made Shumbh angry, he told her you are fighting with different Devis & I am alone, by that time most of the Asuras were killed.
Hearing this all the Devis merged in Durgama, who told Shumbh, they are all my Vibhutis. In a fierce battle, she killed Shumbh.
This is the DSS story. Most of the Puranas gives this version only.

Did Kali drink Raktabheej's blood? From what I recall, she put a thali b/w his blood & the ground. Problem was that every time a drop of his blood fell on the ground, thousands of new demons would emerge. So she made sure that his blood fell on a thali and nothing could be regenerated, and that way, she successfully killed him.

As per DSS, when Aindri attacked Raktabeeja with her Vajra & Vaishnavi too attacked him with her Chakra, thousands of blood drops fell from his body on ground, creating thousands of Asuras. seeing this Durgama- Chandika told Kalika to open her mouth wide & take all the bood drops of these Asuras in her mouth, roam in the entire battle field like this, so all these Asuras will be finishes & no new Asura will be created. Then Chandika hit Raktabeeja with her Trishul & Kalika took all his blood in her mouth. The new Asuras were created in her mouth from the blood, she did their bhakshan & drank Raktabeeja's remaining blood too. Resulting in his death.

The glories and triumphs of Devi are described in the Durga Shaptashati- a 700 verse work which occurs as a part of Markandeya Purana.

Why is this Shakti- based story embedded in Markandeya Purana ?

Once a person by the name Kroushtuki appeared before Rishi Markandeya and requested him to tell him about the origin of Gods, the various Manus and especially the Manus to come.

Markandeya narrated in detail the life span of Brahma, the various Manvantaras (epochs), the various Manus (rulers of the Manvantaras), including the story of Vaivasvata Manu- the ruler of the present Manvantara.

Havinf heard all this, Kroushtuki asked Markandeya to tell him about the future Manus. Markandeya then narrated the story of King Savarni, who is due to become the ruler of the next Manvantara.

So how did Savarni get to become the next Manu? The answer to this is in the story, entitled Saavarnika- Manu- Charita which occurs in Markandeya Purana and is spread over thirteen chapters (Chapters 78 to 90). It is this story which has become popular by the names Durga Shaptashati and Devi Mahatmiyam.

Devi Mahamityam / Durga Shaptashati is divided into three parts :

Prathama Charita (Ch 1)- Killling of Madhu / Kaitabha & Describing the Goddess in Her Tamasic form

Madhyama Charita (Ch 2,3 & 4) - Destruction of Mahishasur's army (Ch 2), Mahishasur' s death (Ch3) and Devi Stuti (Ch 4). Description of the Goddess in her Rajasic form

Uttama Charita (Ch 5- 13)- Description of the Goddess in Her Satwic form, dealing with the destruction of the rest of the asuras.

The DSS is a narration by Rishi Medhas to two people- a king named Suratha and a trader named Samadhi.

The killing of Demon Mahishasur

Once when a demon named Mahishasur became powerful enough to rule and harass the three worlds, the devas went to the Tri - Dev with their woes. From the combined forces of Brahma - Vishnu and Shiva appeared a wonderful and splendid Goddess. Shiva gave her his trident, Vishnu his discus, Agni his spear and Varuna presented her with a conch. Vayu gave her a bow, and Indra his Vajra. She was thus bedecked and adorned by all the celestial beings.

The Goddess challenged Mahishasur to battle. A gruesome battle ensued b/w the asuric forces of Mahishasur and the divine forces of the goddess. Mahishasur took the form of a wild buffalo and creating a dust storm with his hooves, charged at the lion. The goddess threw the Varuna Pasa and bound him up. However, the asura immediately changed himself to a man with a sword and shield. The Goddess felled him with a spear and cut his head , even as he was half emerging from the buffalo form.

After this, the grateful devas sang a stuti of the Devi.

Lovely thread with a lot of info.
But serious confusion on time lines. I guess they want to cash in on the navaratri too - which is fast approaching. So they need this buildup.
But Agree on Vaarali's and other deatisl on Devi Mahatmayam and Durga Saptashiti.
But from what i have understand from certain people ( not on this forum but with whom I have these discussions on) its not Parvati who is actually ferocious but Lakshmi. Can some here explain this to me? I am very curious.
