"Lachiman gaye banahi jaba lena mool phala kanda
Janaksuta sana bole bihasi kripa sukha brnda"
When Lakshman had gone to the woods to gather roots, fruits and bulbs, Shri Ram spoke with a smile to Sita.
"Sunahu priya brata ruchira sushila, main kachu karbi lalita narlila
Tum pavak mahu karahu nivasa, jau lagi karau nisachar nasa
Jabahi Rama saba kaha bakhani, prabhu pada dhari hiya anala samani
Nijapratibinba rakhi taha Sita, taisai sila rupa subinita"
Listen, my darling, who have been staunch in the holy vow of fidelity to me and are so virtuous in conduct: I am going to act a lovely human part. Abide in fire until I have completed the destruction of the demons. No sooner had Rama told Her everything in detail than She impressed the image of the Lord's feet on Her heart and entered into the fire, leaving with Him only of a shadow of Hers, though precisely of the same appearance and the same amiable and gentle disposition.
This following is given in the Lanka Kand during the time of the Agnipariksha:
"Sita prathama anala mahu rakhi, pragata kinhi chaha antara sakhi"
- The real Sita had previously been lodged in fire. Shri Ram now sought to bring Her back to light.
Both Ramcharitmanasand Adhyatma Ramayana have this version.
Lord Rama knew very well that Mother Sita is the purest in all the three lokas ("Teeno loko mein param punita"). Ravan could never have even touched her. But as per Valmiki Ramayan Ramji wanted to prove to the whole world that Sita is completely pure. He Himself never doubted her.
