I thought that Satya Yuga was 10 times longer than Treta Yuga, Treta Yuga was 10 times longer than Dwapar Yuga and Dwapar Yuga 10 times Kal Yuga.

Deboleena & Sattvik

On whether Ganesh or Kartikeya was older, we discussed this some pages ago. Scriptures in Northern traditions have it that Kartikeya was older, while Southern traditions flip it around.

Anyway, whether Kartikeya or Ganesh was older is somewhat tangential to whether Taraka took advantage of Sati's demise. In the Southern traditions, Taraka was the youngest of the 3 brothers - Surapadman, Simhamukha and Taraka, and Surapadman was the one who requested the boon that they not be defeated by any power except Shiva's. In the scriptures that have only Taraka, he was the one who requested the boon. Since the various stories are written in isolated chapters which are not chronologically arranged, it's unclear about whether Taraka took advantage of Sati's death and asked to be killed by Shiva's son, or something else. Going by the ACKs, as usual, the one about Shiva & Parvati shows Shiva being the one to grant Taraka the boon that he'd not be defeated by any power except his. The one about Kartikeya shows him granting the same boon to Surapadman.

I'm guessing - from what they're showing - that they're not gonna show Surapadman & Simhamukha.

Mnx is right. The total duration of one cycle of the 4 yugas is 10 times Kali yuga.
Satya yuga = 4 * kali yuga
Treta yuga = 3 * kali yuga
Dwapar yuga = 2 * kali yuga
Kali yuga = 1 kali yuga

Adding them, we get
(4+3+2+1) kali yuga
= 10 kali yuga

HINDU TIME CALCULATION
I have also posted this in Meenaxi's (mnx12) Thread - The time (Yuga) calculation
It is based on an ancient text known as 'Surya Siddhanta'
(Get ready for some Serious Maths) 😃
Hindu Time calculation is based on Lunar Calender, which came into effect after the Kshya Shraap given to Chandrama by Daksha.
1 Lunar Month = 15 Bright days (Shukla Paksh) + 15 Dark days (Krishna Paksh) = 30 Days
12 Months = 360 Days = 1 Human Year
1 human year = 1 Divine day (1 day of Devas)
30 divine days = 1 Divine Month = 30 human years
12 Divine months = 1 Divine Year = 360 Divine days = 360 Human Years
Devas Lifespan = 100 Divine years = 36,000 human years
The calculation of yugas follows the series of 4 : 3 : 2 : 1
so Satya Yug (4) : Treta Yug (3) : Dwapar Yug (2) : Kali Yug (1)
Kaliyug starts with a Dawn (Purva Sandhya = 1 Divine Lifespan) + 10 Divine Lifespans and ends with a Twilight (Uttar Sandhya = 1 Divine Lifespan)
so, Kaliyug = 100 + 1000 + 100 = 1200 Divine years
= 4,32,000 human years = 1 Charana
Going by the above series,
Dwapar Yug = 2 X Kaliyug = 200 + 2000 + 200 = 2400 Divine Years
= 8,64,000 human years = 2 Charanas
Treta Yug = 3 X Kaliyug = 300 + 3000 + 300 = 3600 Divine Years
= 12,96,000 human years = 3 Charanas
Satya Yug = 4 X Kaliyug = 400 + 4000 + 400 = 4800 Divine Years
= 17,28,000 human years = 4 Charanas
1 Mahayug = Satya Yug + Treta Yug + Dwapar Yug + Kaliyug
= 4800 + 3600 + 2400 + 1200 = 12000 Divine Years
= 43,20,000 human years = 10 Charanas
71 Mahayugas = 1 Manvantara (Each Manvantara is ruled by a Manu)
Each manvantara is followed by a Twilight (called Sandhi Kaal) of 4 Charanas
1 Kalpa consists of 14 Manvantaras (each with its own Manu) followed by a Sandhi Kaal and each kalpa starts with a Dawn (called Adi Sandhi) also equal to 4 Charanas
so, 1 Kalpa = 1 Adi Sandhi + 14 Manvantaras + 14 Sandhi Kaal
= 4 Charanas + (14 X 71 Mahayugas) + (14 X 4 Charanas)
= 994 Mahayugas + 60 Charanas
= 994 Mahayugas + 6 Mahayugas
= 1000 Mahayugas = 4,32,00,00,000 human years
2 Kalpa = 1 Brahma Day = 8,64,00,00,000 human years
30 Brahma Days = 1 Brahma Month
12 Brahma Months = 360 Brahma Days = 1 Brahma Year
= 31,10,40,00,00,000 human years (3.1104 trillion human years) šŸ˜•
Brahma Lifespan = 100 Brahma Years
1000 Brahma Lifespans = 24 Minutes in 1 Vishnu Day 😲
360 Vishnu Days = 1 Vishnu Year
Vishnu Lifespan = 100 Vishnu Years
1000 Vishnu Lifespans = 24 Seconds of 1 Shiva Day 😳
360 Shiva Days = 1 Shiva Year
Shiva has no lifespan, i.e. he is beyond life and death, he is eternal 😊
Current Date:
As of today, 50 years of Brahma have elapsed and we are in the First Day of the 51st year. Within this Day, 6 Manvantaras have elapsed and we are in the 7th Manvantara (ruled by Vaivasvatha Manu).
Within this Manavantara, 27 Mahayugas, and the Satya, Treta and Dwapar Yugas of the 28th Mahayuga have elapsed. We are in the Kaliyuga of the 28th Mahayuga.
The time elapsed since the current Brahma:
1 Brahma Year = 3.1104 Trillion Human Years
50 Brahma Years = 3.1104 * 50 = 155.52 Trillion Human Years
In the First Kalpa of 1st day of 51st Brahma Year:
1 Adi sandhi + 6 Manvantaras + 6 Sandhi Kaal
= 17,28,000 + (6 X 71 X 43,20,000) + 6 x 17,28,000 = 1.852416 Billion Human Years
In the 7th Manvantara:
27 Mahayugas = 27 x 43,20,000 = 116.64 Million Human Years
In 28th Mahayug:
Satya Yug + Treta Yug + Dwapar Yug = 17,28,000 + 12,96,000 + 8,64,000 = 3.888 Million Human Years
The current Kaliyug began at Midnight of 17 Feb - 18 Feb, 3102 BC
So, In current Kaliyug:
3102 + 2012 = 5114 human years
So the total time elapsed since current Brahma is
155.52 Trillion + 1.852416 Billion + 116.64 Million + 3.888 Million + 5114
= 15,55,21,97,29,49,114 Years have passed since the dawn of time
Thanks for reading

First of all, Im not that familiar with Hindu mythology, so pardon my ignorance & some of my questions. BTW, this show has now become my favorite show ever broadcast on any Indian channel ever. Those of us who watch it regularly know what I mean. Its revolutionary. If only they would release it on DVD!

Here are my questions -

1. I know these Gods and figures are supposed to be ageless, but what are the approximate ages of Lord Shiva and Sati at the time of these events? At least Sati should have some age ascribed to her as she is human? Or am I wrong.

2. Is there any time period this is set in? I only ask because research shows that the Ramayana and Mahabharata can be placed between some years BC, not sure which, but is there any historical veracity to the Shiva tale at all, or are these just 'fairy tales'?

3. Is there any historical proof or evidence of Lord Shiva or Sati's existence?

4. Some of the later happenings in the story seem too fantastic to be true - her body falling in 51 places in India, her fathers head being replaced by a goat's etc.

5. If Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva are the holy trinity, so to speak, what was there before they existed?

Any answers would be appreciated!

@lordshiv,
Parabrahm is eternal. Brahma, Vishnu, Shiv are different aspects of Parabrahm.

The trinity gods - Brahma, Vishnu & Shiva are ageless - there never was a time that any of them didn't exist

2. Is there any time period this is set in? I only ask because research shows that the Ramayana and Mahabharata can be placed between some years BC, not sure which, but is there any historical veracity to the Shiva tale at all, or are these just 'fairy tales'?

Depending on whether one is a Hindu or not, one can believe whether or not they exist. The Ramayan & Mahabharata are historical, and date back by the number of years calculated in the Treta & Dwapar Yugas. In Dr RC Majumdar's history series volume 1, the Vedic age, he uses the events in the epics to reconstruct what happened during the period, discounting of course the supernatural events described in those.

3. Is there any historical proof or evidence of Lord Shiva or Sati's existence?

Again, like I mentioned above, depends on one's beliefs. Same for the next question of yours below.

4. Some of the later happenings in the story seem too fantastic to be true - her body falling in 51 places in India, her fathers head being replaced by a goat's etc.

5. If Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva are the holy trinity, so to speak, what was there before they existed?

There actually was no beginning of any of them. Lakshmi married Vishnu in the Satya Yuga (during the Samudra Manthan) and Shiva's marriages to both Sati & Parvati happened in the same yuga.

Any answers would be appreciated!

You're welcome

With the story about whos marriage to do first, it doesn't say or prove who is elder, just whose marriage happened first...

Thanks for these answers...

My next question is about Sati... in the show it is implied that she is of human form entirely (made of the elements) which is an obstacle to her union with Shiva.

However, her father is a son of Brahma (making him God-like) and her mother is human? Please correct me if I am wrong. Wouldnt this make her at least part-divine?

Also, if she is indeed human, there should be some sort of historical evidence for her existence, unless of course I am completely misreading history here...

^^^Sati's father Daksh was Brhma's son, a human was given special powers, to run the system, he wasn't God-like.

Divinity comes by birth or it is achieved with penance. Sati has to realise her divinity by overcoming her self (me). There are many examples of God's doing penance in Mythology.
At Kankhal there is Daksh prajapati temple, where Daksh's yagya took place, where Sati's left her body. Besides that 51 Shakti peethas are the biggest evidence of her existance, for the believers.
