Part Eleven
Manyata smiled as she watched Jagat and Jai Nandini exchange rings. Her sister looked radiant in a red and gold lengha. Jagat wore a traditional Indian outfit that matched Jai Nandini's outfit.
Everyone clapped and gave their blessings. Manyata felt warm breath behind her. She moved away to hug her sister. When she pulled back she smiled at their family members and other guests that had flocked over to wish the couple. Manyata felt a bit dizzy and warm, she quietly tried to excuse herself.
Suddenly someone grabbed her wrist and pulled her behind a pillar. She was about to scream but a hand covered her mouth. She stared wide eyed but then relaxed as she saw the person in full view.
"So princess you have been avoiding me all evening. I am getting bored Manyata, chalo ek dance humare saath?," he asked.
She bite his hand pushed past him.
" I am not feeling right. I'll just be back after getting some fresh air," she quipped.
He held her by her wrist.
"Manyata look at me, do you need me to get Doctor Uncle?," he inquired with coneern.
She shook her head.
"I'll just be back," she stammered before walking away from him.
He looked after her quizzically.
Unnati tapped him on the shoulder.
"Sub kuch theek to hai Dada?," she asked.
Udayveer was thoughtful.
"Pata nahin choti," he commented.
Manyata's head was racing as she sat down by the water fountain. The water dripping soothed her headache a bit. Soon she felt as if she was drifting and then suddenly it all turned black.
" She is waking up," someone exclaimed.
As Manyata opened her eyes she recalled the incident that had changed her life forever.
Udayveer had slammed on the breaks as she screamed. Some rough looking men emerged and started to break the glass of the car. They both ducked as glass came crashing down around them. Suddenly they were pried apart. One of them grabbed her while the others surrounded him. She was struggling with the one goon when she heard something that almost made her heart stop.
"Ladke ko mardo lekin ladki zinda chaiye hai."
She struggled with the man more and in the distance she saw a window closing of another car. She saw a side profile. She was shocked that he had arranged all this. She looked back towards Udayveer. They had already injured him and now one of them was about to crush him with a large blunt object. She freed herself and turned Udayveer away in time but she felt this heavy weight on her skull and she started to fal, she whispered his name as she blacked out.
She opened her eyes and looked at her family, Doctor Saab, Udayveer and Unnati standing around her bed.
She looked towards Jai Nandini.
"Sorry Jai Nandini aaj tera koi function tha na?"
"Jiji aaj humari roka tha. Don't worry you fainted after the rings were exchanged," her sister assured her.
"I am so sorry Jai Nandini. I am just a fool. How could I faint like this. I must have really hit my head badly out there," she muttered.
" Manyata beta what is the last thing you remember?," Doctor Saab inquired.
She paused for a second. She looked to see Udayveer's grave expression.
"I had a headache and I was sitting at the water fountain and then I was in the car with Udayveer someone stopped a van in front of us. They attacked us and then last thing I remember something heavy landed on my head and then I don't know what happened," she muttered.
" Manyata beat relax, dheere dheere sub kuch yaad aygaya," Dadisaab said warmly.
"Aap aaram karen, we are all going to be in the hall,"Komal stated.
"Udayveer inka khayal rakna," Brijraj said trying not to exhibit any emotions.
Everyone left the couple alone.
He sat down beside her.
"Manyata ye lo paani pee lo," he said warmly as he offered her the glass.
She started to cry.
"I must have ruined the party for Jai Nandini. I am such an awful sister," she wailed.
"Hey relax. We found you in the fountain earlier tonight. What matters is that you are all right," he assured her.
He stroked her hair and she wrapped her arms around him. When they pulled back, he handed her some tablets.
"Now take your medicine and get some rest. I'll take you home in a little while if Dadisa allows you to leave here tonight," he said with a smile.
She nudged him. She took the medicine and then laid down. He covered her with the blanket and left the room.
She was half asleep when she felt strong arms gather her up and take her out of the raj mahal. Udayveer kept gazing at her as he carried her to the car. He placed her there gently. Unnati sat beside her as he drove them back to the hotel. The siblings tucked her in. Udayveer hugged and wished his sister good night.
"Let me know if you need me Dada," Unnati whispered before going off to her room.
Udayveer turned to face Manyata. He wondered if she would ever remember everything.
He paced around awhile before going to bed himself.
He awakened some hours feeling her lips on his cheek. He smiled and pulled her back into bed with him. He blocked her from getting up again.
He smiled down at her.
"Ab aap kya haal hai?," he inquired.
She smiled and patted his cheek.
"I am fine. I am feeling sore from falling but I think a warm bath will do the trick," she hissed as she pushed him away.
"Don't lock the door Manyata what if you faint again?," he inquired.
"Stop this nonsense. I am done fainting. I'll be out soon," she said.
He gazed after her puzzled.
