"May I come in dadi sahb" said Manyata as she knocked before entering the study. She saw her grandmother was on the phone and motioned her to sit down while she continued talking.
Manyata looked around the room which was beautifully decorated. Her grandmother had such fine taste in dcor and why not she was the Queen mother and she had to showcase her status. Several photographs hung on the wall and many of them were from her childhood days. She got up and went to have a closer look. One picture caught her off guard. It was a picture of herself with her grandmother and her father. From the look itself she could make out the grand background. She was seated on a small chair which was decked in red and gold and had two elephants on either side with their trucks up in the air. Her father was standing on the left side and her grandmother on the right side. She was dressed traditionally in purple ghagra choli and was sitting on the chair with her hands on top of the head of the elephant. Her father and grandmother looked equally magnificent in traditional garb. Something was written below the picture and she narrowed her eyes trying to read the inscription.
"THE RULERS OF DEVGADH, THREE GENERATIONS" said Rajmata Mrinalini Devi standing beside her and looking at the picture.
Manyata looked at her grandmother and looked back at the picture
"Dadi sahb, ive never seen this picture before" she said
"You haven't seen it because it was at the Devgadh palace back home. I specifically asked to bring it here" said the Queen Mother
Manyata looked puzzled as the queen mother continued
"Manyata, your forefathers were different type of rulers. They believed in equal rights for both male and female members of the Devgadh royal family. Your great great grandfather was a pioneer in this and your great grandfather made sure that the rule was to be followed for generations to come. We all felt the impact of this decision when you were born. You were the first born female child of the Devgadh family in almost six generations; the heiress and the future Queen"
Manyata felt goose bumps on her skin as she listened to her grandmother. The queen mother continued
"As per your great grandfather's rule, the firstborn irrespective of male or female received the highest power and authority. She/ he were to be given the best education, to be groomed and treated as the King or Queen that they were meant to be. The picture you saw on the wall" she said "was taken that day when I announced you as the heiress and the future Queen of Devgadh. We had performed the rites and had made you sit on the royal throne, which was used by your father and your forefathers. The same day you were hurt by the plastic sword while you were playing with Uday and"
"And what dadi sahb" asked Manyata as she saw her grandmother's face show a moment of pain
"And the next day you were kidnapped" she finished
Manyata pursed her lips as she understood what the family must have undergone. She felt like a fool when she realized how selfish she had been. She had been oblivious to their pain and wallowed in self pity when all her family did was to wait for her.
"I'm sorry dadi sahb" she said finally as she held her grandmother's hands. "I can understand what all you might have gone through and I promise to make it better. I will do what I can to make sure that you will not have such pain again" she said sincerely
The queen mother touched her face and nodded "I know beta and I have seen that fire in you and I'm very sure that you would make an excellent Queen, which is why ive asked you to meet me"
"What is it dadi sahb?" she asked
"I think it is high time for us to announce you as the heiress and the Queen of Devgadh" said the Queen mother.
"Queen of Degadh, but dadi sahb how can I?" she asked confused at the thought
"Why Manyata, why so confused beta?" she asked
"Dadi sahb, how can I take over before you and father?"
"Manyata our time is done. We have done what we could for Devgadh, now it is your turn. It is your time and you will take Devgadh to the next level. You will rule with pride and dignity just like your father did and just like I did and our forefathers before me. I trust you"
Manyata walked to her room in deep thought. Her father had joined them after some time and he was also overjoyed at the decision.
"It is the happiest day of my life beta" he said as he held his daughter's face between his hands and kissed her forehead.
He father and grandmother were still in discussion on how to conduct the ceremony. They were joined by Komal and Maenka who were busy with the guest list.
"Queen, me a queen" she said out loud looking at the mirror in front of her. "How can that be possible? I'm not queen material"
There had been a time when she wanted the world to at least acknowledge her presence, to accept her as an individual and to respect her, but now those days were long gone. She was a princess and soon to be queen and the road was tough ahead.
"How will I do it alone?" she wailed
"Do what princess?"
Manyata turned to see Uday standing at the door. She sighed in relief and ran into his arms and hugged him.
"Princess?" he questioned as he held her
"Uday thank goodness you are here. I was just speaking to dadi sahb and father and they are planning to make me the Queen. I don't know Uday I'm so scared and how I can be the Queen? I don't know anything about it" she ranted
Uday smiled and led her to the bed and made her sit on it.
"Princess, you should understand that you were always meant to be a Queen. I know it is going to be challenging but I'm sure that you will do a wonderful job. You are a natural leader, a witty charming and graceful woman. You know what is right and what is wrong and more important you were ready to change yourself and accept your destiny for your family. You are selfless and I'm sure Devgadh can boast of a beautiful Queen"
Manyata gave a small smile "You make it sound so easy but I can believe you Uday, you also must be undergoing the same thing. You are also the future Maharaj of Jaigadh. But.."
"But what princess" he pressed
Manyata looked at him for a moment and lowered her gaze.
"Nothing" she said but Uday understood what she meant
"Princess," he said as he slid on one knee, "I..I wanted this to be different, to be unique but….oh hell….." he said as his hands went to his stomach
"Uday, is it paining?" Manyata asked in concern as she stretched her hand but Uday caught it shaking his head
"Butterflies princess, butterflies and I'm speaking like Unnati, just great" he said as he cleared his throat
"What?" she asked looking confused
"Shh….ahem…Princess I love you, I always have ever since I hurt you with my sword and I cried as I couldn't see you in pain. Loved you the first time we met at the beach when you scratched me with your nails. Loved you when I saw you with your hair all open at the resto bar and loved you even more when you called me all those names. Ive tried to keep myself away from you and failed miserably. The time when I was at Jaigadh I was thinking about you every second of every day and when you are in my arms I feel I can conquer the world. I promise to love you, honor you, protect you and cater to all your whims and fancies all my life. I promise to kiss you every single day and night. I know I'm not a flawless person but I promise to change everything of me that you hate and make myself perfect for you. Rajkumari Manyata Kumari Singh of Devgadh, I will be the happiest man on earth if you would accept to be my wife and the queen of my heart" he said and pulled out a velvet box and opened it.
All this while Manyata was sitting speechless while her heart was doing somersaults; this was the moment she was waiting for, this was what she wanted to tell Uday.
Her eyes misted but she quickly brushed her tears away and looked at the beautiful ring in the box. It was a simple ring in platinum with a large ruby in the center and it was surrounded by tiny diamonds.
"Uday, yes" she whispered and smiled
"Princess, as much as I love you, this position is a bit uncomfortable" he said
Manyata playfully hit him and extended her left hand. Uday pulled the ring from the box and slipped it into her finger. "This was my mother's ring and it is very dear to me" he said and he planted a kiss on it.
"I will cherish this all my life Uday" she said admiring the ring and then hugged him
"So I hope you realize what this means princess" he asked
"What?"
"You are the future Queen of Devgadh and Jaigadh" he answered
Manyata smiled "I know but I also know that you would be with me making sure I don't falter and holding my hand and taking me toward my future and toward our destiny" she said without a slightest hint of doubt
"This was what I wanted to hear from you princess" he said as his lips met hers.
That very day the couple told both the families much to their joy. Komal was emotional and Brijraj comforted her as he himself stood watching his daughter and would be son-in-law. Jai hugged Manyata and Uday and congratulated them. It wasn't easy for her but she was learning to cope and although bond between the sisters wasn't soon on the horizon it wasn't impossible either. Two weeks later Manyata was announced as the heiress and the Queen of Devgadh.
