A recent news story stated that in the U.S. high school students are inserting text messaging abbreviations, "emoticons," and "chat-speak into their formal writing. Some writers and educators are quite alarmed at this phenomenon. James Billingham, the librarian of Congress, worries that chatspeak may bring about "the slow destruction of the basic unit of human thought -- the sentence."

Are we headed for --as a LA Times columnist writes-- "a sentence-less future of three-letter words?"

Depends on what you feel is important......communication or language

My difficulty is that I consider both to be important.

Hate the bas***disation of the English language....

But then I'm a Brit thru and thru - hate the way Americans spell our words like colour, for example

But that's just me! 😆 😆

YES!

My vocabulary has been affected slightly...but what has been majorly affected is my spelling! ...I used to be able to spell everything perfectly....now I question my self for the simplest of things!

And the worst part is whenever I'm writing or speaking I wanna use the short form...and it's so hard to convince myself that no short form allowed...

I used to think it won't affect me as much...but the change occurs subtly...you don't even know it 😭

There is nothing wrong with chat-speak as long as it remains just that, in chats-through texting, instant messaging, forums, etc.

Chat-speak should not however enter formal language in a educational or professional setting.

But if banning your kid's texting helps them do better on their next spelling test, go for it.

i agree on that...there's no harm in using short-forms..but when at work/school..one should be able to write the correct spellings..

but sometimes if a person chats too much or rather uses too many short forms he/she gets the habit..and might later on forget what the actual word spelt like...that is an extreme case i think...and is bad for one's language.

thankfully for me...my spellings arent effected much...but i prefer prper words than short forms which are confusing at times..😕

I think internet chat probably ruins the way you speak english... for example I have heard people using the word 'init', however when it comes to writing they write in proper english
