As we watched the final of SGMP Lil Champs last night hubby commented that after cricket and Hindi films if there is anything that the whole nation is watching together it is the music reality shows.

However ugly fights based on regionalism have been seen due to public voting on these very shows.

So are the music reality shows really a national rage? If they are, are they really bringing the nation together or just reflecting the reality of an India divided on basis of region ?

India is so much divided by region which I came to know during C-2005. I could not believe my eyes and ears Hope they get united and act as one country when it comes to these Reality based talent shows 😳

Every country has a regional divide, it is inevitable. Just like people root for their own country people will root for other communities they identify with. There really is no harm in a regionalism as long as it does not cut into national pride or lead to unfair bias.

In American Idol I would rather vote for a midwestern instead of some Hick, Cracker, Yank or California Yuppie. And consequently none of them would find a cheesehead endearing.

actually i wouldn't care how divided we are when it comes to these trivial matters. i'd just prefer to see us united on the more important ones.

as for the impact of reality shows, i think they divide. people have done well when left to themselves in terms of forging relations with folks from other communities. that's how we've had bengali/ maharashtrian singers, punjabi/ gujrati/ south indian MDs, muslim lyricists all coming together and harmoniously working together for a common purpose of putting out the best music. on the other hand, for all the hype the reality shows wld like to sell us, they end up doing the reverse, anatgonizing people from different communities against each other.😊

Ahh but it's ok to be regionalist in such competitive shows . 😊 After all competitions are all about us vs them. and they do come together to put a good show on patriotic theme day. 😛

I agree!!
Maybe it is not too evident in western countries because the differences between different regions are not too visible.

Since we have different languages, customs, food, costumes, pretty much everything different in different regions, then it is but natural for people to vote based on that. It is not a big deal IMO!

It happens in every country and it happens more in India because of highly visible differences. I would surely feel more connected to a contestant if s/he asked for votes in Gujarati. An instantaneous connection takes place no matter what people say.

But I do agree that these reality shows exploit this weakness wrongly and they should find ways to hide the contestant's native places and last names when they participate.
