Every country has a regional divide, it is inevitable. Just like people root for their own country people will root for other communities they identify with. There really is no harm in a regionalism as long as it does not cut into national pride or lead to unfair bias.
In American Idol I would rather vote for a midwestern instead of some Hick, Cracker, Yank or California Yuppie. And consequently none of them would find a cheesehead endearing.
I agree!!
Maybe it is not too evident in western countries because the differences between different regions are not too visible.
Since we have different languages, customs, food, costumes, pretty much everything different in different regions, then it is but natural for people to vote based on that. It is not a big deal IMO!
It happens in every country and it happens more in India because of highly visible differences. I would surely feel more connected to a contestant if s/he asked for votes in Gujarati. An instantaneous connection takes place no matter what people say.
But I do agree that these reality shows exploit this weakness wrongly and they should find ways to hide the contestant's native places and last names when they participate.
