Pradarshak is right. West is mesmerized by Gandhi. So if we are sending our film for Oscars then why not send one that would fetch an award. Regional films getting overlooked is a pity too.

Gandhi, My father is original and well treated film.

You are right. Few years ago, they sent a marathi movie to oscars. even that year, there could have been better marathi movie choices! What we need is for our selective committee to take a look at foreign films (nominations / winners) tin the same category. I highly doubt we bother to do that. Else we seriously would not be sending

1. stories revolving around love between man and woman 🤢
2. hackneyed plots, incidences
3. over acting
4 melodrama
5. half baked marvels that dropped quality midway

I am obviously constrained in terms of watching regional movies, yet IMO, I have not seen a single Indian movie in past years chosen to be our Oscar entry in the same league as "No man's land (winner in foreign movie category the year Lagaan was India's entry) / similar.

If you watch Malayalam movies then 'Guru' might interest you. Guru was official entry for Oscars in 1997. It didn't win but worth watching.

Here is an interesting artice in "Mumbai Mirror".

These are the men who decide which Indian film will go to the Oscars. (But just who are they?)

by Sandipan Dalal

This year's official entry to the Oscars, Vidhu Vinod Chopra's Eklavya has come as a huge disappointment for the industry's filmmakers and actors alike. Sceptics say that this year's submission indicates that the members of the jury seem to have little idea of what might appeal to an international audience. Vinod Pande who chaired this year's selection committee, says, "It's true. I cannot deny this perception as we tend to become parochial in our judgments."

This year the jury watched 10 films and they were divided between Vidhu Vinod Chopra's Eklavya and debutante director Bhavna Talwar's Dharm. During the exhaustive discussion, most jury members expressed concern about Talwar's ability to promote her film well at an international platform. The so-called veteran members even branded her as 'inexperienced' and 'lacking in financial resources'.

Vinod Pande admits, "Several other factors seeped in during the discussion and deliberation. But I sincerely feel that Dharm would have got the Oscar for us. Unfortunately, I had to take a collective decision instead of an individual one."

A few industry insiders also point out that the selection process to determine the selection committee is also replete with flaws. The authorisation for selecting India's entry has been given to the Film Federation of India (FFI), an apex body of 34 film organisations. Every year the FFI asks the concerned constituents - a bunch of producers/ cinematographers/ costume designers bodies across the country -- to nominate members for the central committee. As a result regional biases are unavoidable and the busier A-grade filmmakers usually stay away because they are busy with their films. When quizzed about it Pande says, "We follow the democratic percepts thoroughly. The body of work of a particular jury member doesn't really matter as long as knows how to judge a film which represents the Indian ethos and issues."

THE JURY

Vinod Pande, filmmaker and chairperson of the selection committee:
This director-producer is best remembered for his telly serial, Reporter (1994). His latest films Sins starring Shiney Ahuja and the more recently, Red Swastika did manage to raise eyebrows because of the lavish skin show.

Sudhir Mishra, filmmaker:
This mainstream filmmaker continues to ride high on the success of Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi. His screenplay for Chameli also earned him a bunch of bouquets. His forthcoming film is Khoya Khoya Chand starring Shiney Ahuja and Soha Ali Khan.

Jalees Sherwani, writer and lyricist:
An eminent writer he is known for churning out dialogues and lyrics for B-grade fiJalees Sherwani, writer and lyricist: lms including Mrityudaata (1997) and Baaghi (2000). His favourite actor continues to be Salman Khan and he has worked on most films starring Sallu - Hello Brother (1999), Tere Naam (2003) and Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004).

Nadeem Khan, cinematographer:
This veteran cinematographer has worked on a bunch of films including Disco Dancer (1982) starring Mithun Chakaraborty and King Uncle (1993) starring Jackie Shroff and Shah Rukh Khan.

Anil Sharma, filmmaker:
Post Gaddar, Anil Sharma focused all his energies in getting the Deol family together to face the camera. He takes a lot of pride in displaying Indian ethos in his films.

Bijoy Kalyani, producer:
He hails from Kolkata. But we are not really aware of the quality of films from his stable.

Ravi Kottarkara, producer:
He is an illustrious financer from Chennai. He produces Tamil films.

Shahid Aamir, costume designer:
Certainly not a very popular costume designer and stylist in Bollywood. He is best known for his association with Fardeen Khan and his family. Naturally, his films include Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena (2005) and Just Married (2007).

Ranjit, film editor:
Even a Google search refused to furnish us with information about this gentleman.

Jagdish Sharma, producer-director:
There are not too many projects in his trove either. He has mainly made C-grade films Judge Mujrim (1997) starring Suniel Shetty.

Ravi Sharma, music director:
This celebrated music director composed scores for the Chopras mainly. He has the memorable track 'Chaudahveen Ka Chand' to his credit.

My question is, how many of them has seen an award in actual life?(except for Sudhir Mishra)

As Indians some care, some don't. From an arist's point of view it's huge honour and appreciation for his/her creativity. Not only that, ek aur faida - an oscar will give good market/business to Indian movies in the west.

I think just like good books shared here in DM, we should ask(I proposed this long back to Sowmyaa) the moderator to start a sticky thread on good movies(hindi, english, regional, foreign - language no bar). What made us like them, can give a short idea about the movie for others to grow interest. I know you guys will suggest the Bollywood section, but the crowd there are more excited about commercially successful/ big star-cast movies.

I have no idea whom to contact here with this idea, can someone help me.
