My mother tongue (and why do we call it "mother tongue" when our families are traditionally patriarchal!?) is Bhojpuri. Yet circumstances (army family) led to me learning Hindi and English simultaneously and picking up Punjabi as a 3rd language for the most part (good old Patiala).
My Bhojpuri is pathetically weak. And not having had the presence of dada-dadi in our lives, we never did pick it up. I totally get you. So I suppose, by default, Hindi has become my "mother tongue." I am more fluent in Hindi than my mother tongue Malayalam and people don't even think that I am a South Indian by looks or language. We were guests in Army/Air force camp for some time and I know the culture. Hindi and English becomes a default language.

My grand daughter is exposed to so many languages Gujarati, English, Telugu & protugese. When we have her we speak mostly in gujarati with her and my son speaks english and DIL speaks the other two languages 😛. Poor baby has so much confusion but she is handling it fine with no stresss 😆

DB jaan, That is a multilingual family and your GD is so lucky. It must be confusing now but kids pick up new languages so fast. Do you speak/understand Telugu?
