now get this.........we bought my uncle a dishwasher on our card b/c we get a discount on it. its been a year and he still hasn't paid us back.

i think this is extremely rude. we were doing him a favor by getting him a 15% discount and he ends up not even paying us back for it. its $400 bucks....not pocket change. what should i do?

Dear Mittijalebi,

You need to stop being mitti jalebi and be practical IMHO. I think people use people who give away impression that it is ok to use them. is saving someone 15% worth this headache? Unless these are gifts when u buy them.

You need to ask your self this question. Instead of blaming them ask this question to your self could you have done anything differently to avoid this situation? What are you doing to be in this situation? This is real candid answer from me. Hope you dont take it wrong way and understand me ๐Ÿ˜ณ

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you..

Put yourself in the shoes of the others and ask yourself would you have felt bad if the other person had asked for his money in that particular situation...if not ...go ahead and ask for it..

We had a real kanjoos girl in college who would pile on others to drink tea...it cost one rupee in the college canteen and she would be like I dont have the money pls order for me as well...intially we all would think..it is just one buck but when it kept happening again and again we started asking her for the money back!! ๐Ÿ˜†

the same rule should apply to everyone. the person with my money should stand in my shoes and think how they would feel if they did a favor to someone and then ended up not getting paid for it.

๐Ÿ˜• i guess it doesn't pay to be nice these days. i can't believe i'm being accused of blaming them!! it's my money for god's sake! i have a right to ask for it back. all i know is that if i borrowed something from someone (clothes, jewelery, movie) i can't literally sleep until i give it back to them. this is money that we're talking about here.

its been months and months since its outstanding with no indication of repayment by the other party. if it was like 10 or 20 or even 50 bucks i would let it go. but this is like 600 bucks in total owing to me.

what am i doing to be in this situation...........i'm doing them a favor. 15% might not be a lot to me or you, but it is alot to the person who i helped.

I'm with you there. And it's not just about the money - it's about the principle behind the whole scenario...if you were doing them a favor, they ought to respect that, and show their appreciation of your favor by paying you back asap. You shouldn't have to call them back - they ought to know better. I kinda admire you asking for the money back...because I had to do the same thing once, and I hated having to call the person and saying "I need my money back"...brrr...i kept avoiding the dreaded phone call hoping that the person would come to their senses and pay me back but it never happened...and to think that the person owns a big business, while I'm a meager student ...sometimes people just need to be reminded constantly...and embarassing as it might be for you to ask for the money back, sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do...so more power to you, girl! ๐Ÿ˜†

i think if they dont care about returning your money without prodding by you, then you shouldn't care about how badly they'd feel if you did ask for it back. perhaps they forgot. perhaps they did not, and are just intending to take you for a ride. either way, why guess? and why agonize over a situation when you can get the other person to feel bad instead?๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜‰

just make sure however you dont go overboard with that bill for the machine. dont be charging them $120 for something that they might be able to buy cheaper outside. no captive-market kinda pricing here. ๐Ÿ˜†another approach to use there is provide cost-plus pricing as opposed to retail pricing given that you did not tell them earlier how much it would cost them.

as for the $400, go for it. sock it to them. cant be in business and be so sensitive about people feeling bad. you hire/ fire people all the time, just gotta be a bit ruthless when it comes to your own interests that's it.

bottom line, if you're going to agonize over it, then you should ask for your money back. it's more debatable as to what you should be doing if you'll not be giving it a second thought.๐Ÿ˜Š

hope this helps. let us know when they tell you that "the check is in the mail".๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜† somehow i think we should be wishing you good luck๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜†

MJ,

Dear You misunderstood my statement. I am not at all blaming you for anything. You have right to your money. So go for it and render them the bill for $120 and $400. Hope they will repect your generosity in helping them saving some money and pay you back.

You are right abt these day and age one has to be practical when doing something. Either you do a charity-gift or business transaction but either way next time set your expectations right from the get go.
