The idea for this thread came from the article posted below and the comment made by a member on the same

"donation to this extent HMmmmmmmmmmmm
He could not give one check to Red cross too. for the victims who will foolish enough to gather around his house o see glimpse of wedding and be the victim of lathi charge etc."

My questions are

1. Should donations be totally an individual's choice?

2. Is there any purpose in donating such large amount to a religious place?

3. Should common man expect donations from the rich?

4. Should celebrities be criticized for donating to religious places and gurus instead of charities? If you have said YES to point 1 then I believe NO is your answer to this point😛.

- Amitabh's donation to feed pilgrims for entire year

Hyderabad, April 15: Many wounded egos in Mumbai will miss the feast at Pratiksha, but thousands down south can taste the Bachchans' wedding hospitality.

Amitabh Bachchan today made the biggest ever donation by an actor at Tirupati, temple officials said, a part of which will feed pilgrims to the shrine every day for a full year.

The superstar arrived at the Balaji temple early this morning to seek blessings for son Abhishek and future daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai ahead of their April 20 wedding. A wedding invitation card was placed at the idol's feet.

"He donated a huge bundle of currency wrapped in silk cloth and put a box of gold ornaments in the hundi (collection box) outside the sanctum sanctorum," said a temple official who didn't wish to be named.

"The money was in 1,000-rupee and 500-rupee notes and there were some 50 wads. The box of ornaments was about 1.5 kilos. Altogether, it must be over Rs 1 crore."

But Bachchan wasn't finished. He handed three cheques for Rs 51 lakh each at the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam office.

One of the cheques was for the daily annadanam — free food for devotees for one year. Temple authorities said on an average, 30,000-40,000 people visit the shrine daily and of them, about 20,000 have the free meal. Bachchan's contribution will take care of a large share of the daily expense.

The second cheque was for the pranadanam fund, which provides poor patients with free blood. The third went to the bal mandir fund, dedicated to the welfare of the girl child and primary education in villages.

"This is the biggest donation by any actor here," the official said. "Rajnikant (the Tamil superstar) and Rajkumar (the Kannada film icon) had earlier donated diamond ornaments to Balaji."

The biggest donation ever, worth about Rs 10 crore, came in 2001 from a Tamil industrialist who can't be named. Two years ago, former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Uma Bharti had donated over Rs 2 crore.

Bachchan was accompanied by businessman Anil Ambani and Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh. They, too, dropped a few packets of currency and ornaments such as rings and chains into the hundi.

The trio had arrived in Chennai on Ambani's private aircraft and driven to the temple in two Mercs. The TTD joint executive officer escorted them to the sanctum sanctorum, where a ritual was performed to seek the deity's blessings for the young couple.

Later, the temple's vedic pundits and senior priests blessed the pilgrims. All three were given a shawl and a packet of prasadam.

Aishwarya had earlier made news by trekking 22 km to the temple around the time she split with Viveik Oberoi – which made the later engagement with Abhishek poss

Yes, absolutely. Especially when an individual is donating his/her hard earned money. Why is it publicized so much when celebrities donate is beyond my comprehension😕

2. Is there any purpose in donating such large amount to a temple?

Why not to a temple? Do you know the amount of money churches and mosques recieve in donations every year world over? We hindus take our religion and heritage for granted and do not invest in maintaining or spreading it.

We all have our religious beliefs and phobias. If Mr. Bachan feels that by donating to the temple, something good will happen to him, then why not? Wisey bhi in our religion, there is not that much stress over donations. In christianity or islam, the religion mandates donating at least 10% of your earnings....if I am not mistaken. We Hindus....most of us, specially the common midlle class people like me, bus makar sankranti per khichadi mans di aur pandit ko kapdey dey diye...ya phir shraddh per khana khila diya aur ho gayee donation.

3. Should common man expect donations from the rich?

Depends, if you can sustain yourself by sheer hardwork, you should not expect anything from rich. Your government, ideally, should be supporting you in your hour of need. If you do recieve some help from a rich person, make sure to help some other needy person when you have the means. Keep this chain going and see what wonders it does😊 Anyways, you can't force people to donate, no matter how rich they are. Take for example our very own Laxmi Mittal!

Gauri I agree with you. Hindus are very liberal in such matters and are never forced to do anything in the name of religion, like visiting the temple regularly or donating to the temple. If someone is doing it voluntarily then there's nothing wrong about it.

When I wrote temple what I meant was any religious place be in Mosque or Church or Jewish temple.😊 I will make the correction in my original post now.

I apologize if my question was misleading. I meant was any religious place but wrote temple because the article was of a donation to temple. I made the corrections in first post so please refer to that. 😛

I am happy on fence. I am pleased when money is used for humanitarian work. If the money donated to the insitute is furthermore trackable into nobel cause, then why not? It really bothers me that lot of such money never reaches the needy. But again, I am very opinionated and hence on FENCE in this debate.
I always complain google wasting money on perks to employees, donating so much food and what not while there are school closures in Oakland. I argued enough with my husband on that 😉
Donation is individual choice and they don;t hire me as the advisor 😉

No problem at all Maya. My response would still be the same. It is my money and I choose where to donate it. I know in a country like India, there are so many needy poor people that it looks absurd ignoring them and donating to a temple. Still, it is the personal choice of the individuals and we should not judge them based on whom they are donating to....as long as they are not paying "supari" for some murder....then it is illegal.....but would it be really illegal if I pay supari for one of our esteemed corrupt to the core politicians or dons😛 ...j/k

My question is for the QT sitting at other side of the fence 😉

Should donation depend on an individual's bank balance? If I gave away my old car and bought myself a Merc then am I selfish? I could do well with my old car and Merc is more of a luxury. I could have used that money to feed a poor. How different is what AB did? I know this donation had several zeroes attached to it but we still don't know if and how much he donates to charity. So do we have a right to question his choice?

oh those are some very valid questions right there.
i don't think what is selfish to one is exactly selfish to another. if u gave away ur old car, that itself is charity. it is better than hogging both the cars. I always see the positive side.

For me, Amitabh's temple donation is basically about not HOW MUCH he gave, but what was the motive - is it from MANGAL FEAR or is it really a religious thing.. Did he something similar when his daughter got married? What else does he do other than walking running barefeet to these temples? Answers to all these questions are important. At the end of the day, I don't think anybody can judge him. We can just express an opinion as to what we would have done with that money 😳. If he earned it, ofcourse he can spend it however.
Charity begins in heart. Buying better things for themselves and for MY ABHI (Bentley) does does not make him a lesser human being!
With celebrity status, one can expect nosy judgmental people commenting on their personal life. Did you notice that I initially just said hmmmmm? 😆😆
