First of all, it's fun! And second, it gives you the chance to see what parts of the story you might have missed. I like watching movies that are based on books because they give me another way to experience the story and characters.
Honestly, yeah. Personally, if I find out that there is a book or a comic based on a movie or a tv show, I tend to want to read the book first because it's the original version, simple as that (and also, yay, a new book to read!). I'm not saying that you absolutely have to read the book first, however, I think that if it's unfair to book fans if you flat-out disagree with their negative feelings towards movie if you don't know the source material. And vice versa. I don't think anyone who has only read the book or has only watched the movie/tv show should be comparing the two. I absolutely think that people who are attached to certain books are not obligated to watch adaptations, but don't just say it's bad if you haven't watched it.
Also, I don't think that the this whole "the book always better" mentality it good. I actually think it's a terrible outlook to have. Sometimes it is, sometimes it's not... and sometimes they're both bad.
- I watched the atrocity that was 13 Reasons Why in its entirety after having read the book that same year it was released. It was a terrible adaptation of a decent book.
- I also read The Hating Game after seeing the movie trailer, and waited to watch the movie after I read the book. It was not only a fantastic adaptation, but the story translated better in movie form than in book form (the book was fine, it just wasn't for me).
- I both read and watched After (only the first one) and they were bad, but at least the movie provided us with some great commentaries. Terrible adaptation of an equally terrible book.
