5,000 e-learning kiosks to come up in villages

New Delhi, Nov 28 (IANS) More than 5,000 kiosks to impart computer literacy will come up in villages across the country by the end of 2007.

Shakeel Ahmad, minister of state for communications and information technology, said Tuesday the project would cost about Rs.30 billion.

'By the end of 2007 we will set up more than 5,000 kiosks in villages and invest Rs.30 billion for it,' Ahmad said at the India Economic Summit here.

'These kiosks will be set up in local panchayats for training villagers on information communications technology. The trained villagers will help train others in their village,' Ahmad said, addressing a session on 'IT and Telecommunications - Time to Think Ahead'.

I would like to know what most people think about technical / IT growth not only influencing urban life, but now reaching villages in India.

Is it unnecessary / premature given that many villagers yet have learn to read / write.. , they still have water &/or electricity issues.. (literacy is still an issue, why jump at e-literacy?)
or
Is it about time to provide it to villages as it will help boost their ambitions and hence growth?

QT, really good topic. 👏

I am glad that I see some kind of interest by government to literate and keep our rural villagers updated with the world. I think whatever positive thing done in this area is good. This way they can know what is going on in world and how much we have grown. This could motivate many children and parents to learn more about it...it's good to be curious. It would be much helpful to climb ladder in order, with electricity and power supply and basic education and then computer literacy, however, I don't want to point fingures at when something positive is done. Also, I have seen 4 year old kid who know basic alphabets, numbers etc. can operate computer adn learn it I think with some basic education it should be ok to expose these villagers to computer.

I agree with you. If we wait for every villager to get water, electricity w/o efforts and to become literate, it may be too late for some of the rest to progress. Basic as well as advanced facilities can be provided simultaneously to cater the villagers as per their requirements. A positive step toward being "with" the outside world will boost ambition and determination of these people to move forward. We cannot forget the hungry people, but at the same time, we cannot forget to grow.
Thanks Sowmyaa.

Great Topic 👏

IMHO ... i believe that it is a good step. When electricity, water and illetracy problems are emerging .. we are empowering them to help themselves.. If they got the facility of e-Universities [Bonafied ones!!] .. education level will rise..exposure to problem solving techniques, mental growth, knowledge... Wht more we can ask for! 😃 BUT!! this all should be done under proper guidance ...so the harmful consequences of Internet are handled carefully.

There are a lot of logistical issues,About a couple of years ago, I visited a town of population 300k, they hardly has any internet connectivity, the electricity is not there half the time of the day, when they have supposed to run water pumps, do regular chores, If there are life neccesities to be done during the time when electricity is available, education will take a back seat.

If this is a situation for a town of 300k population, imagine a situation in a village.

Yes it is a great idea, but it is too early, Infrastructure needs to be built up first, then we can have e-learning.

Yes, they can add up computing abilities to the current schools they have, and run computer education off of there, that would be helpful.

BTW do any one know "Whole in a wall" concept of NIIT in India. Those people fixed computers in walls in slums and children try to run the computer by themselves.

If we are Talking about Villages and These Problems like Literacy, Poverty and The Main Electricity Problems , SO these Problems suits at Villages, Coz these are the things due to Which Villages are down then Cities............
But Now-a-dayz, In Cities we are having same issues(Problems) like village, Just have a Look. First of all the main Thing About this Topic, Education, We Found Hundreds of childrens in Footpats or Signals.......then have a look at Electricity Problems , and Soooo On.......... SO Now we have a competetion with Village, weel I think we are stll bit away from Villages 😆

Most villages still lack basic amenities of water, food , shelter (pucca houses) and electricity too. Besides most schools in rural and urban dont have basic classrooms too.

As for metros even the natioanl capital-New Delhi is facing power outages hence I am not sure how e-learning will help without putting fundamentals into place first.

First our villages should be ridden of E-coli, provided clean drinking water and foor and shelter for all....😊 then we can think of e-learning..
