Fk the fat brown buffalo. He is not the first malefactor to roam free and won't be the last.

You have no control on any of that so why bother?

I think we do a mistake if we dismiss or categorise Burhan Wahi as just your usual sns creation.Because modern terrorism has changed and he by today's definition was a militant , this is how they work aka ISIS types. Or the Bangladeshi ones. While terrorist attacks might have increased the "recruiting from the valley" was decreasing. Yes, I do agree the mishandling by Army, Govt and State during 2009-2010 first sowed the seeds of dissent but the shift in the protests in Valley , very reminiscent of 90s happened after 2013 when again coming out in support of militant processions became popular.
Army and Analysts were anticipating it for months. But this is worrying now because it took India a decade and more to make guns "uncool" for the youth, but people like Wani and now this procession might push us back to the 90s which is dark times.

HT did a cover story on these youngsters like Wani , interviewed their families . Wani's dad was unapologetic about his son joining militancy . He connected it with religion ,the connect of Jihaad. Funny this isn't your poorer section of Kashmir but able , well off and many of these youngsters had educational experiences outside Kashmir . The idea of encouraging the youth and then justifying using religion is so sad and pathetic .

I don't say Army and Govt are not guilty of letting this happen. Equally responsible especially about denialism . You have special status to Kashmir, every allocation but it rarely or never translate in the development of the State. Also, it's about time, when the situation improves , we must relax Afspa in Kashmir and Manipur , if not revoke it completely..because that is never happening.

At the same time, the whole idea of Azad Kashmir is so illogical. Is POK free? They will either turn into another Afghanistan or China would take complete control and do exodus of Muslims like it did in it's remote areas. It is just not an option. Never will any Govt of any country will give up.

This Govt is not equipped with dealing with rioters and thats not just limited to kashmir but in Haryana- during Jatt riots(which was a bigger mess) or the Gujjar ones. Also, the whole idea of shutting down the internet communication, press is silly..we paid the price of it during Operation Blue Star, check Turkey will did something similar this week..this never works. Infact you are agitating a generation which considers internet as a Birthright.

We cannot afford to go back to 90s and we need to, every party, take some hard decisions.

But I am so amazed at the stupidity of liberals in india when they too refuse to call Wani a terrorist or hark about Azad Kashmir - what do they even mean by that? Because it's cool these uni students and pseudo liberals take to the street shouting semantics which make no sense and end up glorifying militancy and people like Wani.

You have your answer in the term "pseudo-liberals" that you used. Leftists and Liberals (both Left and non-Left) have a tradition of highlighting the evils of Hindutva goons, but completely underplay the grave threat posed to the secular fabric of India by Islamic radicals. In extreme cases, they even denounce attempts to make Article 44 of the Constitution into a law (Uniform Civil Code), branding any such attempt as a 'RSS plot'. The paranoia is so high that even progressive social reformist movements such as AIMMA (All India Muslim Mahila Andolan) do not endorse a uniform civil code.

Back to Kashmir-- yeah, AFSPA needs to be relaxed. The use of stone pellets has also come under considerable fire, and understandably so. But rarely do the chattering liberals realise the amount of thinking and calculation that goes down behind the decision-making processes which sanction the use of stone pellets. There are a vast variety of non-lethal crowd disperal options available; rubber pellets and tear gas shells for instance. But rubber pellets are ineffective except for targeted firing as opposed to stone pellets that can be dispersed over a wider expansion. As far as shells are concerned, those don't always burst upon throwing and it even happens that an intact shell or two gets thrown back at the Army by the crowds. So, there's little option for the Army and Administration in these circumstances. It should also be noted that the Army used to fire Size 4 bullets previously which had high potential for doing permanent damage; and now it's down to a more benign version: Size 9.

@KW- Problem with Afspa is , Govt is very slow in relaxing it and this is just not about Kashmir but also NE. if I am not wrong, even Chandigarh was under it's jurisdiction till 2011 or something. it took them more than 18 years after 1983 to revoke it from Punjab.
Afspa and the use of pellet is not helping, we just lack basic training in handling rioters or protestors...Haryana probably be the latest example which was way messy.

Kashmir is deep and we too have screwed alot, especially in last 3-4 years ,I do think Vk Singh's tenure shifted alot of things in not just Kashmir but in Delhi, wasn't there a report about how he marched an Army unit around Delhi and this was leaked way after it happened.

There are so many stakeholders in kashmir but none of them want a solution. But the general crowd who talk of Azaadi and try to justify with gun probably need a good look at what Azadi would mean?
You have China who would capture the place , it has already punished the Muslim minority and prohibited them from practicing Ramdaan ..now did we hear any word from any Islamist leader against that? None or Anyone against it?

Omar Abdullaah and mehbooba talk about Azadi depending if they be in power or not.

Hurriyat C is probably the most despicable body ever who push the valley for Azadi while their kids go study abroad and give a flying eff for Kashmir or anything.

India will NEVER give up on kashmir. No country will do that. That is a fact. Also a fact Indian govt, need to step in the internal politics and connect with people differently. The whole depending on Mukti-Abdullah dynamics has let India drifting away from kashmir.

On that note, I detest NYT's coverage of India.

KW- There are hundreds of kids from 4-15 who have lost their eyes because of pellets. We cannot deny that Army rule has it's dark side too.
We need to address that and probably approach the region with a different sensitivity. Relaxing Afspa is a good start.

Finally "Iron Lady" is going to break the fast and fight elections. More power to Manipur. NE probably have it worst when it comes to Afspa but their enthusiasm towards elections is heartwarming. Nagaland probably is way more controversial but ofcourse.

Prolonged army presence in any part of the world gives (and always has given)rise to human rights violations, that's a sad but immutable fact. Don't know if there's any way to control that, except may be the presence of a regulated UN peacekeeping force, which is out of the question insofar as Kashmir is concerned. AFSPA needs to undergo some major changes as far as holding a separate court martial for Army offenders is concerned. Offences by Army-men should be brought under the purview of the Civil and Criminal Offences judiciary. But that's nearly impracticable as of now, since it will lead to a huge uproar in the ranks. Already the Government has earned huge disfavour with the Army over the not-too-long-ago OROP agitations. (Admittedly though, some of the demands were inadmissible).

Hurriyat Conference hardliners form a huge part of the problem, especially the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat hardliner faction led by SAS Geelani. They need to be reined in by a great part if we ever hope to get the people on Kashmir on our side. And the only way to do that is infiltration by the Research & analysis wing, which was crippled in the leg by that imbecile Morarji Desai. Anyway, I'm digressing.

The fact of the matter is that it's extremely easy to just see one side of the deal and criticise. We never really come to know of the circumstances the Army has to face on a hostile turf they have to inhabit 24*7. Living within a circle of fire (both figuratively and literally) takes a severe toll on you. As for the pellet-blinding incidents, I don't condone them, but we should also dwell on the alternatives available, of if there are any at all.

KW- I get it. Army doesn't have it easy..false accusations, citizens baying for their blood , adverse conditions. It's tense, complicated and messed up situation.
I don't really see if Army would ever be brought under Civil and Criminal Judiciary. But it does need some purview . For the last 2 years, we haven't inked a deal or any regulation for Army's evolution in any sense. A lot is talked about but nothing has materialised properly. Make the local police equipped , credit to J&K police they actually stood against a raging mob, if they are well trained alot of issues that Army faces won't be there. Let them have a greater role in the state.

But to appease the masses, we need to relax afspa and also greater role of Nationalist parties in J&K.
