Most of my post school/uni life i have been keeping my IT certification relevant and current. If you are in the field you would know the need for it. Probably it applies to other fields of education too. I have recruited people to work for me and i am employed by organizations to perform some tasks.
If there are different people asked to perform a task, how do you choose who can perform the task as desired.
Scenario 1: All have Grade A we don't know exactly how many answers they went wrong.
Scenario 2: Person A has 100% score and Person B has 95% score
Scenario 3: Person A has 50%, Person B has 75% Person C has 100%
I guess scenario 3 is straight forward, scenario 2 is bit tight but scenario 1 requires further testing to determine who is the best candidate to perform the task.
Professional certifications are there to test your knowledge and abilities. I cant give leverage to people just on the fact the we dont want to hurt feelings or feel left out. You either get it or dont. Its like saying hey look i know 90% of open heart surgery, i got the last question wrong about how to stitch back everything so i lost 10% marks. I bet you dont want that doctor to perform surgery on you. Right?
BTW: certification exams have different method or evaluation than school/uni. It is more straight forward evaluation on what you know and removes the emotions or preferences of the examiner out of the loop. So it is more impartial and straight to the point and more accurate evaluation of your abilities and learning.
If we reflect the industry standards and we are preparing children for what awaits them when they grow up, rather than harsh reality for later. Just my thoughts though!
