@Desigirl: Can you explain what do you mean by 'individualistic culture' and what do you mean by 'collectivistic culture'?

okay individuals in collectivistic cultures consider the needs of their families, peers more important and when taking decisions the highlight is more on the others than on himself/herself for example Asian cultures and individualistic cultures is like when an individual considers his needs the top priority and lives life in his own accord eg western culture...

Desigirl, I can understand what you say. Definitely it is easier to say 'No' in Western culture to the relatives, but it is difficult in Indian or Asian culture. I know in USA, if the son wants to stay in father's house, the son has to pay rent which is something we never hear in Indian culture.
I won't say I like to follow one culture or the other and neither would say one culture is better. But there are some principles which are God's laws if we follow we can do better in this World. That is the case whether a person is Indian or Westerner. And an important principle which no one can ignore is the best friend of anyone is himself or herself. Only you are well-equipped to take best care of yourself. If the first person whom I take care of is myself, then only it helps me and then I will be able to be more loving to others also who include my siblings. If I ignore my needs trying to do something for my siblings just to be in the good books of them, I will only be feeling unhealthy resentment towards them. This is the very point, the person who started the thread tells with the title 'Rob a person.' Also one thing I learn is there is no need for me to live with a belief that I have to confirm to the family culture. Honestly my family has never been fair to me.

@maha2us I agree living for ur selves is a very good idea becoz only when ur satisfied with life u will be able to interact with others in a proper way..but I do feel is that we have to consider individual differences not everyone does something for others to be in their good books something's are done becoz u feel like doing it and it gives u happiness..I think the point the thread starter was making is that when ppl come from out they shuld buy gifts according to their convenience and not give in to unnecessary demands of the society..
Pls elaborate on the God laws not familiar with that aspect

@Desigirl: I can quite understand what you say. And even though I said that I have to give top priority to myself, I myself am struggling to follow this principle. All that I can do is practice and give thumbs-up to myself, whenever I become successful in implementing this principle in my life. Of course people can be annoyed when I behave in a different way and it is really tough to cope up with the reactions of people when they become hostile. Definitely what you say is the point, the threadstarter meant.
What I meant by 'God's Laws'? They are based on the book 'Conversations with God' by Neale Donald Walsch. In that book, God tells the author the first person for whom one has to give importance is oneself.

@Peridot: I can find similarities between what God said in 'Conversations with God' and what the Lord Krishna said in Mahabharata. But that is a big topic.

It's an excellent book, though one must wonder are these actually God's thoughts channeled through a man, or a brilliant synthesis of all the author has learned in his spiritual searching...one will never know!

@Peridot: As God says, there has to be balance between giving and receiving.
@Aarya: This is how I understand it was definitely the conversation the author had with God. Each of us have unconscious conversation with God. I am telling my experience here. But the conversation won't be uniform and there are other voices also which disrupts this conversation. There are other voices because we tell ourselves repeatedly many things told by our parents and other elders which are all inducing fear and we also scare ourselves many times. what God tells doesn't scare people. If what you hear has joy, truth and love, it is God's voice for you.
Sorry, I am not to talk more on this area because this is totally off the original topic of this thread.
