The current state of religion is pathetic. People commit heinous crimes, behave unethically and think that a confession will absolve them of sins. This isn't with Catholics only, but all religions. People hold rituals, go on pilgrimage thinking that these superficial acts absolve sins.

The intent of confessions or pilgrimage is not to blindly absolve people of sins. One of the key requirements is genuine repentance. A person who confesses is supposed to truly feel remorse for their misdeeds and seek guidance from the priest to become a better person.

Bang on👏
Congrats RTH,you are promoted from being intelligent to super-intelligent...
You understood what I want to talk about...

There is a set of people who really believe that making confession in front of god will make them pure.Like here in India, its said that chaaro dhaamo ki yaaa karo and you will get away with your sins...And there are really people who are involved in murder and still feel that God will forgive them.

Fact is that we need to realize that CRIME and Religion are TWO distinct entities. Gone are the day when Religious institutes also acted as legal courts - I think it happened around the time Inquisitions were abolished.

Crime relates to the Law of the Land and no Priest has the right to absolve you of it. Religion cannot and should not take precedence over Law. Religion is what you practice within the four walls of your home or the Senate if you happen to live in Texas.

Agree.
And No🥱 Sant doesnt confess to anyone...
mORE THAN 60% of Indian Sants are already part of crimes...and the mast thing is - they support their deeds saying that "God ordered them to do so"

Suhana, I have just one question. And that is because I take what you say seriously. As you believe things are not so easy, after committing a crime. More than someone else forgiving you, will you be able to forgive yourself when you kill someone? That is impossible. Every human being is capable of love and destroying someone capable of love is not easy to endure as one thinks. It will be a life time regret after the murder. Will you be able to take care of yourself after you murder someone? If I really kill someone, I believe that person's eyes will follow me endlessly as the soul of anyone can never be destroyed and my conscience will never forgive me. This is an area, the priest can do nothing.

I dont think I can ever murder someone...of course until circumstances dont lead me there...
Am too kindhearted (IMO) to even hurt someone without reason leave murder...
And you and me may regret after killing someone...isliye hi toh confessing start hua tha...confess u were wrong and you repent it..
But a set of people don't feel like the way you mentioned above...

Suhana, Definitely there are set of people who don't feel like us both as you say. But then we are peaceful in our heart. Are they peaceful? They will be very much tense and anxious to hide their crimes and this tension itself will punish them.
Making confession in front of God definitely works. But it won't work as an excuse to do any crime. When a person makes confession realizing all his sins, definitely he will find things working for him but he has a long way to go. Valmiki did do a lot of crimes as a robber and he did confess when he realized he was in a path of sin and then he changed his path. But when he changed, he never looked back to his older ways and has gone into a completely different path. That is how confession works. There are also others like Valmiki.

Seriously? 😳 Confessions of secret feelings or coming clean about inhibitions and fears is one thing. It helps, right. For, once a person's gotten it out of their system, they experience clarity of thought and feel light. But confessing a sin is incomplete, actually pointless unless one actually understands what they've done. Saying it won't make what's left of em salvageable, it won't bring back who they killed or what they destroyed. Pointless theory.
