Do you think public and private sectors in India should consist of mandatory retirement age? maybe at around 60 or 65? We have huge number of young population without job but at the same time there are older people in family who are bread earners too. Some companies have started offering some early retirement benefits/plans, but what do you all think about applying mandatory retirement age?

abhijit,

about politician i totally agree. about reasons you gave, 2nd and 3rd reason they can alway volunteer. I have not seen many people doing voluntary activities in India. They are just handful..the popular belief is why work for someone and something that does not pay you. Those old people who are retired who cannot live their life without work can always help tons of institution and even if they want to get away with wife 😉. First reason is valid that is the one which is sad too. but sometimes mandatory retirements especially in the top level management allows opportunity to younger generation. but then in some proffesion like doctors or laywer experience is all that matters. The more experiece you are better you get.

in some countries in europe (and ours) the retirement age is actually being raised.
this has been brought about the combined effect of the oldies living longer and the people having fewer kids. that implies fewer working hands but greater pressure on the social security... the oldies are encouraged to work longer so they help release this burden...

I dont think there should be a mandatory retirement age because i feel that if someone is working and leading a hard life then they probably need to. I know a lot of people who have only daughters who they have to marry off and give dowries to so they need to work in their old age to do that (i am not saying that its right but that is what happens and we have to consider that) there are people who have no one to support them they need jobs even in their old age. its not fair to say that we shud get rid of the older population and get rid of their jobs to give them to the younger population. They both need these jobs so more jobs need to be created to help people rather than making retirement compulsory.

I feel there must be a Mandatory retirement age in Politics atleast, India desperately need fresh blood in Politics and old faces must go now, bahut kabaada kiya hai unhone desh kaa! Politics is such a taxing job, physically and psychologically too...and they are the people who take decisions, make policies for the country which determines our present and future. I think 60-70 should be mandatory age for retirement for Politicans. No one should be projected as indispensible.

It is true that mandatory retirement would make jobs available for the young but then again.. as many mentioned so many older ppl are in need of a job at that age also cos of financial difficult or just to stay active and not get lazy.... and therefore it will be very unfair on them... as zara mentioned more jobs needs to be created so that there is less unemployment...

Also government should give more subsidies to run a business.. today opening and running a business especially in mumbai is so difficult... what with the paper work and red tape one has to go through to start a business.. and then the taxes.... and when one is doing a business [especially small or medium scale]... some political party or so comes and asks for donation for their party thinking our business is doing very well so we should give them some dakshina.... 😡
how much effort one has to put in their business and what profit they achieve, that person only knows.. If all such problems are taken care of by the govt, more and more people would go into business and create employment opportunities for others....

Regarding political parties.. yes there should be mandatory retirement... fully agreed with that.. not only mandatory retirement but also it should be made compulsory that the person whether he/she is an MP, MLA, any office bearer of the govt should be at least graduate. Being a graduate should be the basic criteria to hold a position in govt office.

I think use the American way.. if you can do it you can continue doing it... there shouldnt be retirement limit... yes...population control is better measure to match people with resources rather than these artificial mechanisms....Earlier maybe retirement looked honorable way of calling it a day today it looks more like good riddance....also like abhijitji said... who takes care of inflation.... this is for private.. for govt make it mandatory,

Hmmm...everyone here seems to be against the idea of mandatory retirement but supports mandatory retirement for the politicians. So, I'd like to give opposing views.

Retirement should be mandatory bcos:

1) After a certain age productivity and efficiency always drops.

2) Older people were moulded in their times and will have ideas which are sometimes outdated.

3) As people grow old they tend to become more conservative and overly cautious. Young people will encourage out of the box thinking and will be a lot more open to experimenting.

4) Every field develops newer methods and skills and training the younger lot is a lot easier than older people.

Why politicians shouldn't have any retirement age:

1) A young politician will need years before he comes to know of all the related fields in politics.

2) Experience counts more in politics than fitness.

3) By the time people prove themselves to be a great statesman and capable of leading a nation they already turn old.

4) When a politician is heading bilateral talks between two countries a lot of trust factor is necessary. If an old politician who is heading a negotiation is replaced by a new minister the other country may not trust him immediately.

1) After a certain age productivity and efficiency always drops. Not really... unless they are into dock loading/unloading... we are wasting more time browsing the web then the people 20 years ago who respected high productivity..Old people have better sense of commitment...

2) Older people were moulded in their times and will have ideas which are sometimes outdated. Sometimes sure, so it cant be generalized...

3) As people grow old they tend to become more conservative and overly cautious. Young people will encourage out of the box thinking and will be a lot more open to experimenting.. if it was true.. india would be far more ahead of its time.. its this lack of thinking which keeps us backward.forget "out of box" thinking...

4) Every field develops newer methods and skills and training the younger lot is a lot easier than older people.this is valid.. learning ability goes down with time

Why politicians shouldn't have any retirement age

1) A young politician will need years before he comes to know of all the related fields in politics.u mean mucking around...😆

2) Experience counts more in politics than fitness.yes its just a techinique of earning bribes and no "out of box" thinking required... true...😆

3) By the time people prove themselves to be a great statesman and capable of leading a nation they already turn old.ya so much for your "out of box" "young" thinkers above...😆

4) When a politician is heading bilateral talks between two countries a lot of trust factor is necessary.
