C O M M E N T A R Y
Our softness
The G-8 expresses "outrage", and we claim victory.
18 July 2006: The PM's men are spinning that the PM's G-8 visit was "highly successful". Someone ought to tell these spinners that you don't use words like "successful" days after such a tragedy as the Bombay blasts. When you use such words, you minimize the tragedy, demean the victims and their families, and lower the sombre, sad mood of the nation.
But how "successful" was the PM's trip in real terms, to use their word? What was achieved that was unachievable? What happened that was unexpected? After two hundred people are blown up, no one can say it is any less than a tragedy, and no one can not condemn the terrorists who bombed them. Well, the G-8 leaders did just that.
Did they mention Pakistan by name? That would have counted as progress – the word successful is repugnant. No, that did not happen. If you ask the foreign office officials, they would justify this was never the aim. Hell, why undertake the very high profile, highly publicized trip if you didn't want Pakistan named? Why defer the foreign secretaries level talk? Why say the peace process with Pakistan would be affected – if the whole point were not to get Pakistan labeled a terrorist state in the meeting of some of the world's most powerful nations?🤢
This was a case of missed opportunity, or maybe, we just failed to turn enough heat on Pakistan. The word then is "failure" for the PM's G-8 visit, not what his spinners want us to believe.
There's more. After making tough noises against terrorism, the US quietly went back to hyphenating India and Pakistan, hoping that the peace process would continue. The US assistant secretary of state, Richard Boucher, put the dampener on Indian celebrations, as it were, by pointedly saying, "But our outlook remains that India-Pak cooperation is important for the region and we hope they will find ways to continue it in the future." That carries a hint of US pressure to continue the so-called peace process. And there was the stress on evidence, before carrying to the next step of stopping the terror groups and their supporters, not unlike Pakistan's own stance.
But it is funny that our high commissioner to Pakistan, Shiv Shankar Menon, should nail this lying positioning. He said that despite evidence being given about Pakistani terrorism in earlier cases, no action was taken by Pakistan, and that Pakistan flatly denied involvement. Since then, Pakistan has covered its tracks better, and evidence is harder to get. Now the G-8/ US position is to go after this hard-to-get evidence, and then nail Pakistan. If this isn't a cop-out, what is?
What are we crowing about success?
Since A.B.Vajpayee's time, we have believed that engaging Pakistan would prevent terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir and the rest of the country. Engaging is common with US diplomacy, they call the process engagement, but in the manner they apply it, it acquires a different connotation and purpose than when we do it. The US never used engagement in dealings with the Soviet Union during the Cold War, at the most it got to dtente, the easing of strained relations.
On the other hand, the US has employed engagement to describe its own stabs at diplomacy with lesser states, not equals, and anyhow, nobody has equaled the United States since the disintegration of the Soviet Union. The US has engaged with belligerents to bring peace, especially if one is an ally and the other not, as happened at the beginning of the Egyptian-Israeli peace process. In the case of India and Pakistan too, the US has engaged us, to talk peace, to bring a solution to Kashmir, when there is none acceptable to India except the status quo. And loosely, we have adopted a US word, engagement, to describe our own peacemaking with Pakistan, when the whole concept is flawed.
And how can there be peace when the US has separate and compelling interests with India and Pakistan? With India, it wants to have strategic relations, God knows why, but Pakistan it most definitely needs to use as a battering ram against the Al-Qaeda/ Taliban and as a symbol of a "progressive"/ "modern" Islamic state, a partner with it in the war against terror (and as a tool against India). If it can neither afford to let down India nor Pakistan, Pakistan more certainly than India, what are we doing rushing to the G-8/ US? What do we expect the US to do more than what we can do ourselves, provided we have the juice?
That is the point.
Because we don't want to initiate our own punitive actions against Pakistan, lost the heart for them, we take the line of least resistance, scampering up to the US with our own distresses. No other self-respecting nation does it, not Russia with its Chechen terrorism, not China with nothing, and Israel shows its fury for the abduction of three soldiers, and the US backs it to the hilt. We, on the other hand, go with our neighbourhood complains, begging, and the US tut-tuts us. And we call this "successful". 😡
The truth about Manmohan Singh's G-8 visit is that we have surrendered to Pakistani terrorists and their tools here. Pakistan will insist on evidence, knowing its tracks are well covered, we will have none to show, or evidence Pakistan will deny, and soon, sections of the UPA, for votebank considerations, will clamour for resumption of the peace process, and the government will give in. There will be glowing curtain raisers for the foreign secretaries level talks, there will be con jobs about how General Parvez Musharraf is our best man in Pakistan, and the media will go gaga over alleged India-Pakistan togetherness. There will be plenty of photo-ops – until another serial explosion tears us apart.
The craven spinning after G-8 gives a nauseating picture of our softness.
Could we have been different? No. We have lost the idea of our distinctness, unlike China has never lost, or Russia, or France, we are becoming a spent power like Japan, a geisha state (Japan has never suffered terrorism). What a picture, the Japanese PM making a fool of himself over Elvis. We are getting there. We have ceded our foreign policy, defense and security initiatives to the US. This is not to say the US means us harm, not at present, but somewhere, we have lost it, given up, surrendered.
It is so utterly, benumbingly tragic that even the murder of two hundred people in Bombay has not awoken us. 😡
This man should be put behind the bars for speaking such rubbish....err, no what he is saying is correct afterall he is a secular person.🤢

Shahi Imam ''absolves'' LeT, blames RSS for Mumbai blasts
New Delhi | July 18, 2006 12:44:10 AM IST
Using a rostrum overlooking the majestic Red Fort, the Shahi Imam of Delhi's grand old Jama Masjid today hit out at the principal political rivals of the United Democratic Front (UDF) he has floated ahead of Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh while challenging the charge that Islam breeds terrorists.
''I can say with authority that it is not any Muslim but the Shiv Sena, the RSS and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad who are responsible for the serial blasts in Mumbai,'' Imam Syed Ahmed Bukhari told a gathering inside the historic mosque. He cited the recent Sena backlash against the defilement of a statue of the late wife of the party chief as evidence that the Saffron forces were desperate to politically revive themselves in Maharashtra. The Imam was of the opinion that Muslim men were being blamed for ''every'' terrorist outrage as part of a deep rooted conspiracy. Community members were being harassed by law enforcing agencies in Mumbai in the wake of the serial blasts even though they had ''no role in the anti-Islamic outrages'', he said, slamming the Congress Governments in Maharashtra and at the Centre. ''Why is it that security forces blame the Lashkar-e-Toiba within ten minutes of a blast. If they already know who did it, why don't they go ahead and arrest the culprits well before the crime is done,'' he asked. He said he was willing to visit Pakistan and ''talk'' to the LeT commanders if he was given proof of its involvement in terrorist incidents in India. ''If they are responsible then we will talk to them, tell them that they do more harm to the cause of Islam and to Muslims in India through their actions''. Imam Bukhari said he was worried that while real culprits went scot free and trigerred more blasts, ordinary Muslims were becoming terror suspects in the eyes of the people and the police. ''Every bearded man becomes a suspect'', he said. Charging the security forces with perpetrating excesses on Muslims, he said terrorism could not be wiped out in such a manner. ''If you want to end terrorism, then you would also have to end State terrorism''. ''The Government should handle the issue of terrorism tactfully. We want equality before the law'', he said, alleging that the ''yardstick'' was different when it concerned violence perpetrated by Maoists and insurgent groups in the North-East. He hit out at the Congress and the Samajwadi Party, saying these ''so-called secular parties'' were to blame for all the ills afflicting Muslims today. ''When Muslims get targeted under these so called secular parties, it is time we teach them a lesson. It is time Shias, Sunnis, Ansaris, Saifis, Barelvis, Qureshis and all else stand up as one -- as Muslims -- and snatch back our collective rights and dignity,'' the Imam said, asking the community to stand up to the political challenge.''We were rulers here for 800 years. Inshaallah, we shall return to power here once again'', (Imam Sahab, yeh hawai kile banana band kariye, aap logon ka raaj-paat chala gaya aur kuchh problem hai to aap shauq se apne pyaare Pakistan jaa sakte hain apne logon ke saath😆) he said to loud approval by the nearly 200 assembled men.
😡
Yes and did he not attack when he wanted on Saddham when othrs nations criticized him...he did not care. So why should we care...get these people out who want to be the ruler again😡
Can't blame US here, we are idiots for asking US to do our dirty work. Hamein khud hi fikr nahin hai apne citizens ki security ki, doosro ko kya khaak hogi.
Originally posted by: Aparna_BD Shahi Imam is obviously getting overtly defensive!!! This is the attitude that will never help India deal with terrorism if the muslims decide to get overtly protective of the bad elements within Indian society only because they share a religon.
As for the ICSE text book, i am sure there is some mistake as one writer who calls Bhagat Singh a terrorist will not change India's opinion about Bhagat Singh. Every Indian knows Bhagat Singh was a freedom fighter.
UMMMM,I did my 10th ICSE two years back, and I remember studying Bhagat Singh in a chapter called "The 1857 revolt".....,I dont think there was a separate chapter devoted to Bhagat Singh...The first chapter in the indian history part was about the Revolt of 1857,and it was just mentioned that Bhagat Singh died for aazadi....I dont think there was any chapter dealing about Bhagat Singh in detail😕 ..Or perhaps the syllabus changed after 2004😕
The Congress fought for the independence..the Muslim League were forever busy fighting for their "representation" and their pacts .....Ofcourse,we did have frontier gandhi and other people in the congress who fought for freedom with no less patriotism and vehemence than gandhiji and Nehru, but the Muslim league on its own did nothing other than quibbling for represetation🤢...and even after the independence and after seeking the modus vivendi, their prime concern is their representation and their religion......Its more important that each Indian puts the country first and then his religion...When people are monomaniacally loyal to their religion, then tend to betray the country...Such fanatics need to be expelled.....😡😡..
The government may mince words,But i dont have to.....Its mostly the disloyal Muslims of India who help these militants😡😡..If they feel so insecure or harbour so much of hatred against the hindus who are in majority, they can leave the country(ofcourse I'm talking about the disloyal elements)...If they are enjoying all the rights and freedoms of an Indian Citizen,THEY OUGHT TO BE LOYAL.....Its so ludicrous isnt it,a terrorist organization openly asking their "muslims brothers and sisters" not to venture out of house....Its so infuriating,to know that some people prefer to share a common brotherhood on grounds of religion, but not on grounds of nationality😡..
Untill such elements are left scot free,India can never combat terrorism......and because of such elements, one really finds it quite hard to trust the Muslims and even the innocent ones sometimes come under scrutiny........terrorism in India has become some sort of a war between the Hindus and the Muslims😕....
Only the level headed educated patriotic Indian muslims can drill sense into the head of the uneducated misguided ones...If a hindu or a christian try to preach, they are tagged as communists😕..and As much as the VHP and the RSS may be fanatic hindu organizations, they do not have a past record of blowing up trains and buildings😊..and in all honesty,India doesnt need to suck up to the United States as its doing right now🤢.....Pakistan is so shrewdly carrying out its under the cover activities, feigning to fight terrorism....India needs to help herself👏,No other country is going to help us😕
Umm,if my post needs any editing,i would request the mods to do so(i guess i got a bit carried away after reading those articles😳)
Aparana you are right. But the problem is new generation as they are not aware of the history
Not sure if i wrote this but there was an episode of antakshari where Anu Kapoor asked the teenager participants about father of nation and they had no clue. Pallavi joshi als o commented that singing is good but our history is more important. She was really furious and Anu kapoor calmed her down...so our teenager do not have much info. Yes it is fault of us too for not educating them too.but this kind of mistake can easily leave negative impact what if they get a teacher who also feels taht way..then
so this should not be taken as a small mistake. before any printing there is a proof reading..so the person who okeyed it should be behind bars..no ifs and buts on taht..as per me 😛
agree with u iron.new genretion will learn whatever they read.Dont that writer😡 knows who is Bhagat Singh? It is not the first time, in the past too so many states education boards put lessons in books which r totally opposite the truth & give the wrong massage( like Harayana board of education put a lesson abt Sikh Guru,I forget 4 which class's sallaybus, which was opposite the truth. later bcz of the objection it was removed) .publication boards & sallaybus setters should understand their responsibility towards young generation .
Indian Politicians always do partiality between the freedom fighters who choose the way of Hinsa( fight) & those who choose the way of Ahinsa ( peace). so I dont think that these politicians will take any step to avoid this type of BIG Mistake again.
Originally posted by: Aparna_BD We must not forget of the Naxal movements and the LTTE as the terrorists in India who are not muslims but plain terrorists.
I would like to remind every one most often terrorists DO NOT have a religon (metaphorically speaking ofcourse). They follow the religon of hate !!!! Thats far removed from Hinduism , Islam or any other !! No religon preaches hate!!
Actually its axiomatic that each of these groups have a categorical doctrine or dogma....More than saying they dont follow any religion,It would be more appropriate to say that all are quite dogmatic🤢.The LTTE hold their ethnocentrism like grim death🤢,and the jehadis are antipathetic towards anything that non-islamic😕..
But whatever said and done, the people who incite, aid and abet the militants need to punished😡
