MUMBAI: A week after the devastating train bombings, Mumbai has received a chilling official communication from the Centre — there are specific and credible intelligence reports about terrorists planning another round of bloodshed in the metropolis.

In a message to the crisis-ridden Vilasrao Deshmukh government, the Centre has warned that certain places of worship, strategic installations and a busy commuter train line were in the cross-hairs of terrorists.

A senior official confirmed the Centre's message and said that the government was concerned and worried. "We have taken
serious note of the message and are taking all possible measures to thwart their evil designs, "the official said.

In Delhi, too, there are intelligence inputs about specific terrorist targets. As reported by TOI on Sunday, intelligence agencies have gathered evidence of a group of 5-6 fidayeen crossing the border and a huge manhunt has already been mounted.

In Mumbai, officials refused to give details of the targets or when the attacks were likely to take place on grounds it would create panic in a metro already on edge after the death of more than 200 people in black Tuesday's serial train blasts.

"The entire city is tense. Under such circumstances, our efforts are directed towards restoring the people's confidence in the law-enforcing agencies. At the same time, we want citizens to be on maximum alert," an official added.

After the blasts, all law-enforcing agencies have been put on high alert. Apart from the State Reserve Police Force, battalions of the Rapid Action Force have been deployed.

Now, in view of the alert message, security will be further beefed up in areas identified by the Centre.

I am still can't get why our Govts (past/present) are so keen on befriending Pakistan even at the cost of thousands of lives. I was watching Karan Thapar's show on CNBC and he asked experts in the studio why should Pakistan stop terror when it is the only leverage they have against us. I was shocked, why the hell should we allow them to use terror as bargaining chip against us, peace process can go to hell.😡 They must be made to pay heavily for such an hostile act against us. Laaton Ke Bhoot Baaton Se Nahin Maante, talks-talks-talks have acheived nothing so far, terrorists have become embolden now, they even attack out Parliament. Why do we tolerate this nonsense every sec, every minute, every hour, every day of the year.😡

Mera Bharat Nakaam (that is what Star New's program said yesterday, and I sadly agree with them).

Jammu: After the Shivling controversy at the Amarnath Yatra, another yatra - Buddha Amarnath in Poonch district has hit a controversy.

The Jammu & Kashmir administration has issued an advisory that refrains pilgrims from shouting slogans like Bharat Mata Ki Jai during the Buddha Amarnath Yatra in Poonch.😡

The annual yatra is slated to start from July 27, it passes through the militancy hit areas of Mendhar and Surankote in Poonch.

Due to security concerns the division administration cut the yatra short from two weeks to two days and in the process, annoying a few leaders.

"The yatra would begin on July 27 no matter what the administration says," says VHP President, Ramakant Dubey.

Due to security reasons, movements of pilgrims in and around Poonch have also been restricted and so has been the shouting of slogans.

But the Jammu and Kashmir administration says it's only a suggestion.

"What we suggested was that there should not be any need for a hype, there should not be any provocation either through slogans or statements," says Divisional Commissioner of Jammu Pramod Jain.

Legend has it that the Amarnath pilgrimage is incomplete without paying homage to Buddha at Poonch.

So "Bharat Mata Ki Jai" is a provocative slogan now? Yahan nahin bolenge to kya China jakar bolenge. God save this country.😡

yes i strongly think that we r going too easy on terrorism, i think the problem is that hindus r a bit too tolerant n peaceful abt such things, now before ppl jump up at this comment, i only said abt hindus becuz they constitute 85% of india n no other reason.... i heard that it might be connected to Al Qaeda, but whoever it is, no matter wat race ethnicity, i hope we find them n take a STRONG action, n set an exaple for others who might think we r weak n try to take an advantage 😡

Why we are so security-unprepared

The latest Bombay-Srinagar terror strikes show up two disconcerting facts. First, that the reality of India is not globalisation or Americanisation, but the safety of everyday living. Second, that our Government's attention is elsewhere and therefore it is unable to tackle the reality.

Consider America, apparently a model country for the Manmohan Singh administration. At least a dozen major terrorist plans were uncovered there in time since 9/11. Relentless vigilance, often to the point of annoying decent citizens, is the route they are taking. A terrorist group may escape detection and score a hit one of these days. But the preventive network the system has put in place would still deserve commendation.

Why is it that we are in no position to do anything similar? There are several reasons. The most obvious is that the Government is so pre-occupied with economic and American issues that it allows security issues to suffer by default. The Americans themselves are aware of this weakness of Delhi. In a position paper prepared by a US State Department official, US Congressmen were told why this was "a great opportunity" for America to strike the nuclear deal with India. The present Indian Government, it said, was economystic and strategically short-sighted.

An "economystically" fixated government can only see growth rates and FDI financials. Security is part of the political setup which, at best, is a nuisance in the path of economics.

This one-track approach is not the only reason for our lapses on the security front.
Who is our Home Minister who presumably has to lead the internal war on terror? Shivraj Patil, a good human being with a refined sartorial sense, has been out of his depths ever since he was plunked on that chair. He probably has no impact - which is like saying he has a negative impact - on the country's intelligence gathering agencies. So what can we expect other than the Home Minister reading a statement and ordering red alert across the country - after the event?

The wrong man sitting in the wrong chair points to a deep-rooted malaise in our political set up. Shivraj Patil had lost the elections. That was ignored and he was given a portfolio like Home. There are many unelected persons who are similarly ensconced in key positions. This would be good for the country if they are people of exceptional expertise. But no such quality distinguishes some Congress leaders who direct policy. The common denominator in all these unwise appointments is personal loyalty to Sonia Gandhi.

The ability to attract loyalty is an enviable quality. But graciousness towards friends and devotees should not weaken the country's institutional pillars. The recent picking of Congress candidates for the Rajya Sabha and the names being considered for governorship do not indicate that Sonia Gandhi is about to put the national interest above her personal interests. Lapses, whether in security or in the essential impartiality of constitutional offices, thus become inevitable.

Behind all the reasons that weaken our security setup is corruption. We are living with history's most sensational war-room leakage and yet our Defence Minister says, why worry, it was only commercial information. Now that we know it is information pertaining to strategy, deployment and equipment purchase, he says, why worry, an inquiry is under way. What sublime casualness! It is not true that a country gets the Government it deserves. India certainly deserves better.
