I am against censorship. Everybody has a right to voice their opinions. People will always disagree, but that does not give one side the right to remove the opposing views.

The only censorships that I agree with is a parental right to limit material that is seen by young children/minors. And, the government right to censor materials seen by criminals in prison.

I personally dont think cencorship is good either, but, it is different with children. Im sorry, but someone has to protect them from seeing things they should not. Just like seat belts. How about a 10 year old getting in to see a XXX rated movie? That would be wrong, wouldn't it? Sure it would. So, in cases like that, censorship is totally warranted and just fine with me. But as an adult, I think if I dont like what I see, I will change the channel or walk out of the theatre or wherever. I am an adult and have the right to choose for myself. I mean, if I am old enough to go to war, pay taxes and be held accountable for myself as an adult, I can certainly decide what I should view or read. And since I have the responsibilities as an adult, I should have the luxuries of my freedom to choose.

So children, yes. Adults, no.

For children censorship is a whole different kettle of fish all together. X rated videos are available for all to see, there is no foolproof method to prevent it from being accessible to a certain age group.

I agree with you. If you don't like it don't watch it. What's the point of making a fuss over it?

Exactly but for that we all need to stop getting offended at views we don't agree with, stop using that as an excuse to issue life-threatening fatwas and spread violence. In short we all need to be freethinkers.( pardon the pun but I just couldn't resist.)

Precisely, people should start respecting opposing views no matter how alien they may seem to you. If disagreeing is punishable by death, why shouldn't the people who issue fatwas be killed? After all they also disagree with the other party. People need to learn to agree to disagree. No need to start savagery because of difference in mindsets.

And no, the pun is welcome! More people need to think freely.

Censorship is not only about regulating opposing views. There are situations when inflammatory speeches or posts can cause a lot of damage to life and property, reputation , security, peace
I think that under these circumstances some censorship would be justified. The recent incidents of mass exodus of people from the north eastern parts of India is a case in point.

Yeah. The whole meaning of censorship changes when it comes to children. Exactly, I mean follow the principle of Live and Let others live! 😳

Though I like this idea but I don't think that would be much of a help. With the advanced population now, people who wanna watch (even though they are not old enough) will watch it anyways. :P

Then the problem arises that who will decide what is "inflammatory" or not? You allow one thing and the next thing you know is that government is trying to censor criticisms as "hate speech". In fact, Indian government is doing it right now with Google, GB, and Twitter. So you see, it just becomes a tool for powerful to suppress its oppressors. So, you just can't give someone power to censor because then transparency is lost. You gotta let people speak. Public can then itself decide what is inflammatory and what is rational. You can't let a group of people decide for everyone.

Like most things it has the potential of being misused . It is difficult to decide where to draw the line. When quick decisions have to be taken it is not possible to wait for te public to decide. Consensus building can take place later when things settle down.

People can be misled, so you always can not rely on the people to be rational. There are certain situations where a quick decision needs to be taken regarding the censorship of the material, since it can lead to things like public violence.. in that case you can not sit around and wait for public opinion. This is exactly where censorship is needed.
I am not talking about the whole government curbing your freedom of speech deal, but decisions of certain important situations can not be left solely on public.
