Striking medicos remain defiant

May 26, 2006 14:30 IST

Striking doctors remained defiant after a meeting with President A P J Abdul Kalam on their anti-quota agitation but kept communication channels with government open to break the fortnight-long strike that has crippled healthcare services in the capital.

The agitating medicos had a late night meeting with Union Minister Oscar Fernandes on 'specific demands' of setting up an experts' panel to review the existing reservation policy. The students said that they were not 'totally' against reservation but opposed it on the basis of caste.

"We are not totally against reservation but want it for economically-backward sections of the society and not on caste basis," Dr Sasmit Sarangi, a representative of Youth for Equality, which is spearheading the anti-quota agitation.

The next partition of India
The students are holding a Delhi Aao, Desh Bachao rally at the Ramlila Grounds on Saturday to press for their demands and announcements for the same were made by placing advertisements in leading dailies.

Traders' bodies, resident welfare associations, chemists' organisations, a section of the medical faculty and fraternity have declared their support for the anti-quota agitation.

President Kalam and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh have appealed to the students to call off their hunger strike, which began on May 14 and assured them of increasing the number of seats for the general category in proportion to the OBC quotas.

The students have hinted at meeting the prime minister after the Saturday rally. With the resident doctors on strike, healthcare services in government-run hospitals were affected for the 15th day on Friday.

NEW DELHI: The government may not be in the mood to give in to their demands, but the rich and influential NRI alumni community of AIIMS, IITs and other institutions have opened their purse strings in support of students protesting against the quotas.

Phone lines in the city have been buzzing with calls from NRI engineers and doctors, offering both financial as well as moral support to the protesters. "We have been getting calls from people in the US and UK. Today, I got a call from a woman in Germany too, offering to help us. Doctors, software engineers — everyone has been calling up," said Dr Naginder of AIIMS.

The sense of outrage over the medical students and doctors being treated in this way is strong even abroad. Dr Manjit Kaur, a neonatologist in Philadelphia, told TOI over the phone: "I completed my MBBS from Maulana Azad Medical College in 1972 and my husband passed out from AIIMS in 1971. We want to come out in support of these students and offer them help in every possible way."

Ravi, a software engineer in Seattle, is another person who has already sent some funds for the protest while Komal, another software engineer in the US, has been calling up to ask how she can help the students.

Apart from word-of-mouth communication through doctors and relatives here, the Internet is where all the networking has been taking place. "Youth for Equality has already created a website in which we have appealed to people to help us out. Earlier, we had set up a blog too. There is a lot of expenditure involved — the tent, under which the students on strike are sitting, alone costs Rs 5,000 per day. Then there are so many pamphlets to be printed and distributed," said a student of Vardhaman Mahavir Medical College.

I am begining to think that maybe students should device another effective method to protest against Reservation bec'se poor patients are suffering. In AIIMS for example, most of the patients come from outside Delhi, they are poor and can't afford expensive private treatment. How about IMA (Indian Medical Association) members deciding not to treat any politician and govt offial or their family members? 😕
