That's exactly my take on it. Thanks for clarifying it to Summer. No one should feel or be made to feel that they're obliged to post here or even keep in touch with people here. They can keep in touch with a couple of handpicked members through other means if they want to and I emphasize IF THEY WANT TO. There should be no strings attached.
That said, the ones who stick around should also learn to let go of people who choose to quit or cut off all ties no matter how hard it is. Easier said than done but whoever said that life's easy? lol. Besides, on the grand scale of things, it all begins and ends in front of your computer screen (or your crackberry/i-phone screen). It's there, yet, it's not there.
And even if some people do leave an imprint on you, instead of moping over their departure, I'd rather appreciate the fact that I had the chance to interact with that person and wish that person well in life. I'd feel a little sad for a couple of days but I will eventually get over it and move on to the next thing. Besides, in a year or so, someone's departure from a waste-of-time forum isn't even going to matter to you, right? At least that's how I see it.

I was only asking people to be true to their emotions, Summer. Like your good self. At least, you cared enough to question the need for people to cancel/deactivate their accounts plus you mentioned a few names that you would like to see continue posting.

I was questioning the genuineness of people who hug / blow kisses / throw virtual birthday parties / pore over excruciating minutiae of their daily lives on these forums for all to see and then turn around and act like it doesn't matter whether or not a member stays or leaves. IMO, it just looks downright silly. All that showing of emotion one day and so-what-if-s(he)-leaves-i-am-moving-on, the next day. No need to shed a tear but if you have done all that before, with some genuineness, at least acknowledge what you really feel after the member left and put a closure, unless we are talking about showbiz type of acting around here.

Ah that is indeed true. I think most members generally want to maintain a friendly atmosphere unless the issue is something close to their heart.
Yes the question of sincerity does arise but at the back of our minds we know the real situation too.
Emoticons are useful and I remember Sarina gave the address location of those "horrible emoticons" to a member once.😆

On the other hand, I think you should lock all things genuine, emotional, etc in a box and put that aside before logging in here. Don't you think investing genuineness on a forum is being impractical? If I were you, I would reserve that for people I know in real. What good did being genuine here ever do people? Okay, maybe you can be genuine over PM exchanges with people who you've made friends with and people who you know that you can trust but why in the world would you express your genuine emotions on open forum? No one would willingly, purposefully put himself in a vulnerable position, right? I think not being genuine is a very healthy philosophy here. I wouldn't do it any other way.

Okay, let's suppose for a sec that it is indeed a "phony" attitude. What's the authentic attitude then? The sad and mopey one? The "omg, i miss you," "i can't live without you" one?? And what can we do to practice that attitude? Create a thread on their departure? Sending out condolence PMs to the "bereaved" virtuals? Sorry if it sounds a certain way, Mister K, but what's the real attitude in your book?

[K] I think you know me enough to say I would never advocate "OMG, I miss you!!!" attitude, CG. That's an extreme.

IMO, no need to open an explicit thread when people leave but since Summer opened a debatable topic questioning the good/bad spirit behind an active member going to the extreme of canceling their account ID, I thought this thread is a perfect place to express your opinions, if any, but any opinion that is contradictory to the emotions you have exhibited in the past would ring hollow, don't you think?

As far as using emoticons go, I only see them as little winkies that come handy in communicating with people without sounding too stoic. I don't see what is there to really "go out of your way" to insert a little emoticon. It's but a little smiley face that's just a click away.

We can roughly guess why they requested a ban by taking a brief look at their footprints on the forum, methinks. It's not that hard to figure if you're a regular user. As for handling those winkies with care, oh my god, Mister K😆 you've GOTTA be kidding me! Are you really asking people to use emoticons with care, so that they don't leave any sort of imprint on people who take them for mirror to real life emotions? Like, REALLY?!

[K] OK, you got me there. I didn't think people would analyze every single emoticon I put out there. Emoticons was not the issue in any case. Emotions are. Sorry, if I didn't convey that correctly. I didn't do enough homework on my previous reply to capture some of the distinct emoticons people have used on these forums. A couple used by dewdrop and vishmewell come to my mind.

But since you asked, I would say even winking at someone you don't know sounds odd to me. But that's just me.

Zero emotion? How's that even possible? Can any human ever be devoid of emotions? Since we're talking of phony attitude, don't you think claiming to be devoid of emotions also reeks of "phony" attitude?

[K] I only said I was speaking with zero emotions when defending the actions of those who have elected to cancel/deactivate their accounts. I wasn't saying I lost my capacity to have emotions, even though I am working on it.

All things said and done, I apologize in advance if my tone or any of my points offended you.

[K] No offense taken. None at all.
