On Sunday 28th November 2010, Wikileaks began publishing 251,287 leaked United States embassy cables, the largest set of confidential documents ever to be released into the public domain. The documents will give people around the world an unprecedented insight into the US Government's foreign activities.

The cables, which date from 1966 to the end of February this year, contain confidential communications between 274 embassies in countries throughout the world and the State Department in Washington DC. 15,652 of the cables are classified Secret.

Some freedom of expression ? 🤔 What would be the consequences? Was it legal to do that ?
But who am I to complain? freedom and liberty ke naam per saab kuchh chalega 😛 Jai ho America !

Release of any info that could cause major problems and misunderstandings between Nations should be filtered.
Decisions made in the past were based on the circumstances then but still it could cause a major rift and disharmony.
There some be some level of responsibility in such actions.

In my opinion these guys are traitors....because they leaked the classified documents of their country putting the whole nation and its allies at risk..............In these times when the whole world is facing terrorism threats...these irresponsible idiots chose to put some sensitive information before the world to see...........their a** needs to be kicked....their organization shut down and they be permanently put away in jail....just needed to vent...I know none of it is happening ..........
As far as the freedom of expression is concerned.........no idiot has the right to put millions of people at risk....because the idiot needs to exercise their freedom of expression...

Wikileaks is a non profit organization that focuses on providing general public access to information through leaks (that is breach of confidentiality) from informant sources.

Wikileaks is not based on freedom of expression really. It basis itself on the freedom of information, namely internet freedom and non-censorship which is actually a very controversial and not widely accepted right.

Depends on who you are and what information is being leaked. In the case of Cablegate, obviously the US government is perturbed over the implications to many of its diplomats and allies. On the other hand some countries are delighted at the information being leaked, and the exposures of some not so savory US activities.

We will have to see. There is no legal precedent for it. There are lawsuits from various countries against Wikileaks. The US is going to charge the founder with espionage. I'm going to say it is illegal. However, since this is spread across so many jurisdictions - it is going to be a very complex legal precedent.

Actually wikileaks was started by Chinese dissidents rebelling against an authoritarian government. USA is probably a country trying to press highest level legal charges against Wikileaks. Its amusing how everything gets blamed on USA, even when it is screwing over USA. Although USA does not explicitly censor the internet, US government has been a major opponent of net activism like freedom of information, anti-DRM, anti-censorship etc. The government has considered imposing minor limitations like the Australian government has.

Obviously, the world was not prepared for the power of the internet. There has been a challenge to authority every time a new mode of communication and mass media has been introduced. Newspapers, radio, television all made organizations rethink themselves because people had access to so much more information. Now the internet age.

It is a classic case of "the people should not fear the government, the government should fear the people." Clearly in the case of authoritarian powers like China, subjugated populations benefit from information. In the case of a free democracy like USA, excessive information can be detrimental. Back during Watergate, "Deep Throat" was like a leak who provided vital information exposing gross misconduct causing Nixon to resign. Who knows what these leaks will expose.

I'm sure with the legal suits as well as organizational and behavioral changes in government, we will come to terms with internet just like we did with other forms of quick information in the past.

From 1990 to today, US Foreign Policy has caused millions of deaths worldwide, in the name of Strategic Partnerships and War On Terror. What can be worse than this 2 decades long bloodbath, a result of US Foreign Policy? How I wish US Foreign Policy is exposed completely for what it is - bullying and genocide... and I think USA looses it's credibility if they try and block Wikileaks' release of documents. Let the truth prevail......Well done wiki leak....tell us about Indians who have looted India and cheating Indians😊

But are the leaks not exposing the truth ? Why should there be any curb on doing that?

No way ! They are only exercising their right of expression and free will advocated so strongly in the US 😆

As far as the freedom of expression is concerned.........no idiot has the right to put millions of people at risk....because the idiot needs to exercise their freedom of expression...
😆 Dont bet on it . There will be many supporters for this right . Besides its for a good cause ....
... remains to be seen if this freedom seen as excessive or irresponsible actually backfires or takes freedom/liberty to new heights 🤔

Wonder if wikileaks also cover the discovery of ghosts and spirits and vampires.
