Two days after the national capital saw the death of three people in a case of honour killing, one of the victims' relatives spoke out to the media on Wednesday and justified the murders.

"Killing some one is not right but this incident is not wrong. It is the right thing to do for the society. This is not wrong and we support it," said Dharamveer Nagar, paternal uncle of one of the girls' killed.

There was no remorse, no fear for the law.

Is there any honour in these honour killings? what makes ppl do it ? Why do these practices still continue in a democratic country? Do share your opinion.

'Honour killings' should be termed as murder - there is no honour in killing another person. These people who do this 'crime' deserve to be hung and made an example of and anyone who supports it deserves the same. People who believe in such rituals are those who have been brain washed into believing such rituals are right to do.
In my opinion they are bast4rds!!!

There is no such thing as honor killing. Killing a person is wrong and murder for whatever reason is a heinous crime. People have a false sense of pride and honor. They have old fashioned notions of how things would be and what saves face in society. Hence they will kill for it.

It occurs even in democratic countries because a large number of people still have a very backward thought. People may not support killings, but socially people support this whole mindset over religion, caste, community, how a girl should behave and support parents stifling adult kids who are too broad minded.. The law enforcement is pretty lax, does not crack down seriously on these cases and serve harsh punishment. Even the law does not support killing, but sympathizes with parents who were supposedly dishonored.

India is a country where police accept reports of parents who say their daughter of age eloped with someone and then harass that someone if caught. It maybe a crime if the daughter is underage, but eloping is not a crime.

There's absolutely no honor in honor killing! It's as ugly as any other murderous assault.

India's culture makes the nation stand distinct from the rest. It's a colorful and religious country where people value relationships but sadly, there are people who value their so-called reputation more than any other relationship. I feel ashamed to be a part of such a society at times. I love the country, I love the people here and all but still, I do feel ashamed due to people like such.

The Indian way of doing certain things makes me feel sick! People are biased and blinded to such an extent that their sisters and daughters are nothing when in comparison to their "reputation".

Such issues are being raised in various TV shows these days. First, there was this show named Geet on Star One in which a gal of eighteen belonging to a Punjabi household was made to marry an NRI who ended up being a fraud, she was pregnant with his baby and instead of supporting her, the girl's family tried to kill her as she refused to get the child aborted. Also, a new show on Colors would go on air soon which is based on honor killing too.

And I have no clue about the "democratic" country thing and henceforth, I won't comment on that. People are being killed in the name of tradition, when would democracy come into play then?

I think , it is the society , which can be blamed for honor killing. Though apparently a family or the relatives are involved , the so called society that live with also puts lots of pressure on them . First of all the society should also shed it's outdated concepts and false sense of honor.

To deal with the immediate remedy, a new law should be passed to ensure that all those directly or idirecly involved in these murder cases get capital punishment. Heavy fine should be imposed on the village or members of the body who had sanctioned this killings.

Its coz of age-old-mentality of illiterate elders who are the influencing/deciding authorities in Khap Panchayats across the villages etc. Add to this, the social stigma coz people bother more about what's happening across the fence, than bother about their 4 walls....
Govt. is planning to introduce bills to curb/ban Khap Panchayats, as I understand.

Do we really need to keep introducing new bills to tackle age old problems . isnt our present law sufficient to deal with it. More than any lack of provision in the law , it appears to be more of a problem of failure in implementing those laws . If the current existing laws dont get implemented what hope is there of new laws being implemented !

Capital punishment now requires the murder to be of "rarest of rare cases". Now the scale of honor killings are happening at such regularity that these culprits will never get capital punishment . They will simply live in jail for 15 years of so and come back home with so called full honor. In my view for this reason alone , a special law is required to deal with honor killings.

Even if they get convicted to those 15 years in jail that would be some justice meted out. The fact is they get away almost scot free !
