I don't know why people seem to have such a terrible dislike for the new version of this song. It is not as bad as people are criticizing it to be. Of course there are many flaws, there is an excessive overdose of Bollywood and some too much of some stars. They could have done more to show some other sports and arts forms, and be more representative states. It definitely could do without Aamir's rapping and Sonu's crooning (what happened Sonu?). Personally, I don't get the issue with Deepika's dress either.
Flaws aside it is a decent attempt. One thing to consider is that without the clout of Bollywood such projects would not be undertaken in the first place. India has changed a lot since the song was last made and it would be nice to remake this song every few decades to remind us of the unity we share in diversity. My favorite part was with Salman and the deaf, hard of hearing, speech disabled children; it was a nice gesture to consider them – it is so easy to forget that sign language is also another very integral language in society.
This is growing onto me. In my opinion people need to cut some slack and appreciate what is there instead of complaining on what is not. The what can be should be constructive criticism for the next attempt. Of course I have not been to India for years and probably do not share the correct 'Indian' perspective, so it is just a personal opinion.
Speaking of remaking classic unity songs, on Monday the day after the Grammy awards artistes in LA will be recording the remake of 'We are the World'. I'm excited about that one.
