From my interpretation of the news it seems that Chetan Bhagat wants to be credited with screenplay in the rolling credits. The screenplay credits always belongs to the screenplay writers. They have never credited author in rolling credits. They only insert an acknowledgment somewhere that says based on/inspired by 'X' novel by 'Y' author.

Although, I do not recollect seeing the acknowledgment. If Chetan Bhagat wants an acknowledgment it is fair. However, he cannot expect a screenplay credit.
