First of all, sorry about the old title: 'Why you watch TV?' I admit it was misleading. That's not what I wanted to know. The current title explains it better I hope. Thanks for all your responses so far, please tell me more! 👍🏼

It was interesting to see though, how many people replied to the the title, and (probably) not the whole post 😆 I take the blame for that. But it was a bonus, your replies have been great! I'm at work now so can't write much. Be back later.

Geez woman, is there something that you don't watch! Okie, I know there are lot of other tv programs not on this list so please don't start listing😆
Seriously RTH, that's some serious T.V. time there with all these shows! Where do you find all that time yaar?
I used to watch sitcoms like Cosby's Show, Everybody Loves Raymond, Sienfeld and Friends. Then I watched Nanny, CSI Miami and Without Trace here and there. I usually watch the dvr recordings of SRGM (when it's on) some episodes of Nach Baliye and currently following DID. Don't get any time to watch anything else! Oh yeah, also watched JJWS and a bit of ASVOI. ASVOI turned ultra crappy and chucked it after a while.
One of these days when both my kids are in college, I'll start watching t.v. again. When they both graduate, I'll quit working and stay at home and watch t.v. to my heart's content. Only 15 or so more years till the younger one's all settled and then I'm free to do what I please and as I please😃

Ooh I forgot X-Files. How could I forget X-Files. I even have the theme music on my i-pod. Oh and Yes Minister and Mind your Language.

Well there are a lot of shows I do not watch but I have been severely chastised and even threatened with violent actions for not watching Lost, Heroes, L-Word, How I met Your Mother, Kyle XY, Scrubs and Top Chef. Apparently there is such a thing as culinary b**er.

You know honestly, I do not watch a lot of TV. Just weekends and holidays flipping channels. There are some I watch but lose touch due to time constraints. Some I watch sporadically. Having a DVR helps. Every season I make my committments to a few choice shows. Like this season it is L&O:SVU, 30 Rock, and Secret Life. URS while it is going on. Usually I make it point to watch Iron Chef special episodes, even history and discovery I watch when there are specials. Same with disney if its a marathon.

You should be making it a point to watch 'What Not To Wear' regularly with a 15 year old daughter.

I'm keeping up with your color tradition.

As for the original posters request to find out more about viewers. From my viewing habits you can see that I do not fall into any stereptyped category of vieweres. Typically those who watch Xena vs Sex and the City, or Charmed vs 7th Heaven, come from diametrically opposite population groups. Most people do not seem to fall into niche groups. But I will come back someday and elaborate on audience targeting and viewer groups.

As a TV addict, I did some soul-searching about why I watch certain shows. The answers that came to me are complicated and disturbing ( A lightbulb moment!). I will share with you my opinion about why viewers like a TV show and how they respond.

Viewers fall into different groups by age, social and cultural orientation, religion, gender etc. To some extent, these factors determine the choices they make (what TV shows they prefer) and how they respond.

The choices are often made subconsciously, as most of us tune in for entertainment. Interestingly, even the most conscious of viewers may find themselves watching a show they found randomly while flipping through the channels... and end up watching it for years!

Well , what is surprising or so interesting about it ?
i mean,
how do we come to know about a new show ?
by randomly flipping only ,no ?😆
There's one more reason though why some people watch shows,
after they have lost interest in the show !
cos they want to discuss about it on IF !😃

TV shows often employ the sublime strategies that lure and manipulate the consumers into buying certain products. Supermarket tactics include the use of soft lights, soothing music, strategic grouping of products and so on. To highlight to the case of advertisements, merely mentioning one name is sufficient - 'Fair & Lovely'. and now "Fair and Handsome" 😆

As a matter of fact,
i really am against such kind of ads ,
but then i really don't know why the people believe in all this ?
Are they so dumb ?(not likely)
Or is it some mental lock ,
due to which they are always worrying about their complexion
and these ads are able to strike right at that weakness ?

Or something else ?

Similarly, TV shows exploit our vulnerability towards love, family values, ethics etc. This is emotional blackmailing raised to a sophisticated art form. Once we start watching a show, it becomes difficult to stop or get away.... because of the sense of attachment and responsibility. And we all know how difficult it is to break a habit. In extreme cases, a handful of people feel guilty for not watching their favorite show. Some die-hard fans will not criticize the show under any circumstances - some chose not to, others could be in denial, and few would go as far as condemning the critics.

The
two cases you discussed above are afterall very less !
I don't think its got to do with responsibility,
its attachment or addiction more than anything else,
and responsibility might serve more a poor excuse more than anything else .

There is another dreaded pitfall - the FAD! Many viewers rush into watching reality shows like Fear Factor and MTV Roadies. The fan-following grows exponentially in online and offline communities, and it happens way faster than the Zombification we've seen in Resident Evil and Dawn of the Dead. Very few would ever bother to find out the difference between FEAR Factor and DISGUST Factor.

Those who would find the show disgusting would not watch it no ?
Those who don't find it disgusting watch the show .
Why do you think that what you find disgusting, everyone does ?😊

Well I watch TV for entertainment. And yes I agree with you, it like a emotional blackmailing, once you become trapped in it, it's too hard to come out for it.
Well I watch Comedy shows and Dramas mostly. And foe me they are my evenings, well for my entire family.
But not always, it's for entertainment, sometimes it's because there is nothing else to do, especially in the winters.

But yes, i hardly criticize my shows, because more than the plot, i am attached to the characters in the show. And in almost every episode i get to see my favorite characters, so I don't mind.

Gauri di, 😆. No they are not my favorites, i like Saloni, Divya, Bani, Rhadhika. All the goody ones. But yes if these Villains were not in there, then the shows wouldn't be that interesting. Because I love watchiong the episodes in which the Villain is defeated by the protagonist. 😆
Now Gauri di you were Vishakha right? Don't worry she's not in trouble yet, but soon her husband is going to find out that she is not the girl whom he married. Then she will be in big trouble😆

Don't laugh that crazily Ashoka jo. 😆

Yes, those who don't watch serials feel that they always reapet things. And to some extent they do, but every serial has different faces to it. Different characters, and the level of the Villain is different as well.😆
In one serial a Villain might be someone who does small acts like taunting or lieing and in another a Villain might be someone who hires goons to get someone killed!!😆
Believe me, I don't get bored of watching these serials.
