CHAPTER 8
" You know you shouldn't have shouted on the waiter , the poor guy got so miserable..."
Suhasini said as the car passed the gates of the Sinha House
"What to do..I cannot tolerate such ineffiecient people, and you know I cannot restrain my anger. But thankfully you were there to control the situation. You managed the thing so beautifully otherwise they would have thrown us out."
Her date replied
" You know something, the kind of patience dating you has taught me, even my children could not. Neither my daughter in law"
Both of them started laughing on this statement. The car pulled over. Suhasini got down and wished him off.
As she entered the house and started walking towards the stairs , she realized that the living room lights were still on.
"These three, they will never grow up"
Suhasini thought to herself and entered the living room to put off the lights. However the sight there startled her. Adarsh, Abhay and Simmi were fast asleep , each of them curled up like a baby occupying separate couches.
Suhasini smiled looking at them and shook her head. How innocent they looked. Her little babies !! But she had to wake them up reluctantly
"Adarsh, Abhay , Simmi ...get up. This is not the place to sleep."
The three got up rubbing their eyes on hearing their mother's voice.
"How long have you been sleeping like this ? DId you have your dinner?"
They had not realized when they had fallen asleep while waiting for their mother to come back. It was true that they did not even have dinner.
Seeing them silent Suhasini said,
"How irresponsible can you be ? Are you still little kids? Just for one evening I go out and you cannot even have your dinner by yourselves...Go and wash your faces. I will warm the food and get the table ready in the meantime"
Saying this she proceeded towards the kitchen
"Where have you been Mom ?"
On hearing Adarsh's question Suhasini stopped and turned around.
"Why are you asking this question? I had informed Simmi already that I was going out with a friend and will return after dinner. Hasn't she told you ?"
"She has, but we wanted to know what kind of a friend this person is. Was it a date ? Are you seeing this person ?"
Abhay asked
"Yes Mom , we have seen your pictures with him earlier also. Everyone is talking about it. Don't you think we deserved to know about it from you rather than outsiders ?"
Simmi added.
However the brothers wished that Simmi hadn't disclosed about the photographs. Mom was not going to take it well.
"Hmm...so you have seen pictures too. I wonder who showed you those. Anyways , since you have broached the matter, I think it will be better to sit and talk."
Saying this Suhasini sat down on the couch and asked them to do so too.
" You are right to an extent ..I have been going out with Viju..I mean Vijay kumar. But as of now it has just been a couple of casual dates. I met him few months back at a charity event. He is a nice fellow. We exchanged numbers and used to only talk over phone and mails. It is only recently that we have started dating...Look , both of us were single and in need of companionship. I think we have been able to provide that to each other."
Suhasini explained
"So are you going to get married ?"
Simmi could not help asking
"Oh no..We haven't even thought of that. At the moment we are happy with our occassional dates. We don't want to make it a serious affair."
Suhasini laughed the idea off.
"But Mom , if you needed a companion, why can't it be Dad ?"
Abhay still had hopes of his parents getting back together.
Hearing this Suhasini's jaws toughened a bit, She looked at Abhay and said,
"Haven't we already talked about it a number of times...Manohar and I were never compatible. Ours was a marriage of convenience and from the beginning till our divorce it remained a compromise. At first we used to fight, then we realized that our fights were having a bad effect on you two. So we stopped fighting, and then there were only silences between the two of us. We could never figure out a proper way to solve our differences. Our respective families did not help the matter either. We still stayed together so that your studies were not affected adversely, and when both of you had settled in you professions we decided to part...Look son, I still love your Dad, but we are better apart than together"
Suhasini finished and got up
"But Mom, what will people say. My mother..."
Simmi started but stopped seeing Suhasini's stern look
"I did not know people still have so much free time at hand to discuss others' personal lives. Still , if anyone says you anything tell them that you could not tame your mother in law...Now come fast for dinner, else I will feed you the stale food for breakfast tomorrow morning"
Saying this she left.
The trio did not know what to say. They quietly went to wash their faces like obedient children
A few days later, Swadheenta and Adarsh were sitting quietly in a park bench, enjoying the gentle evening breeze and each other's company. All of a sudden Swadheenta caught Adarsh's hand and pulled him behind a bush.
