My friend married a north indian. It was a scene to see him coming in dhoti to guruvayoor shri Krishna temple. Marriage happened there and in that temple men can wear only dhoti.
I still remember her brother telling me. I made him come till here somehow, hope he stands in mandap with this without fuss till the marriage ceremony is over.

I recently attended a wedding where the bride is a Tam brahm and guy a German.
The Indian wedding had Jaanavasam in a car, Kashi Yathirai and Kanyadhaanam nalangu all in apt attire. All ther german guests wore silk saree and malipoo if they were women and veshti kurtha or kurta pyjama if women. I guess it is sheer courtesy and respect for the Son /daughter . Painfully missing in our tale.
What was ridiculously hilarious was Saasuma asking beta 's reassurance he wont become a Tamilian after marriage. Seriously is this what education and hobnobbing with Administrators and business folks teaches yoi saasuma?

I am a Tambram...i work in a town in Tamilnadu for corporate India...I interact with a cross section of society on a daily basis...i have never heard KAALAI VANAKAM. 😉
To portray the extremity in the parental positions they are demonising Saasuma and Maamanar. The stereotypes in Movies is always narrow in depicting a group. The way it picturises the Saradars and Bengalis is also as ridiculous as the depiction of Tamilians. Among tamilians too you find tamil cinema painting Tambrahms as nerds steeped in traditions and customs while it maybe true of a small percentage the rest find it ridiculous.
Aachi masala(owned by nadars) needs a madisar maami to say how good the sambar powder is...seriously our media has run out of ideas it appears

@moon I went for a wedding where the couple were Keralites but the boy was working in Austraila for quite some time.
So we saw quite a number of Australians for the wedding all clad in sarees or designer salwars and men wearing dhoti and all like the groom.
But somewhere I feel we miss on this openness. To accept another culture, which is our biggest flaw. Education has not helped people to open up that much. Especially one generation before and they keep on taunting the couple for the different choice.

And yes I would love Adarsh taking Kaashi yatra. where his eyes will be lined with kajal, he will be given a long umbrella, a stick and asked to take a walk 😆😆

its been a long tym ...harshad shirtless😳 i want to c him in our culture attire...am tamilian...😳

Thanks for the post.
I'm really irritated with how Tamilians are portrayed on Gen Entertainment TV. Producers and directors think calling people Amma and Appa is enough to make them a Tamil family.

And they make caricatures of characters. Amma will always wear vibhuti and jasmine flowers; Appa will be dressed in traditional clothes.

The children on the other hand will be totally Punjabi/UP looking and wear trendy clothes. If Amma and Appar are so dyed-in-the wool conservative, how is the daughter always in jeans? Swadeentha wore a weird dress yesterday at the meeting between her parents and Adarsh's family.

And they can't get the pronunciation right ever. Ramakrishnan will be Raamaakrishnan. Appa will also call himself Raamaakrishnan.

And what is kalai vankaaam? Kalai means art.

These are basic things and they goof up.
The other serial where the goofing up is on an even larger scale is Yeh hai Mohabbatein. Caricature elder Amma Appas with awful pronunciations.
Some random family in Dubai will call the very Punjabi looking female lead Amma and the new Appa looks so robustly North Indian that it's not even funny.

I remember Aparna Sen's Mr and Mrs. Iyer. Konkana Sen Sharma was brilliant as the Tamil girl.
