We've proved our point, say Bangladesh

Captain Habibul Bashar says Bangladesh has made a statement to the cricket world after his team's shock World Cup victory over top-ranked South Africa on Saturday.

Bangladesh, ranked ninth in the 11-team world standings, racked up their World Cup record total of 251-8 and then bowled out a dispirited South Africa for just 184 to claim their first points in the second-stage Super Eights with a 67-run win.

The Bangladeshis have registered occasional upsets in previous matches but skipper Bashar suggested this win was the best because it came in the latter stage of a World Cup.

"This is pretty big," Bashar told reporters. "Every win is important for Bangladesh but this win is more important.

"We wanted to show when we came into the Super Eights that we were not there just to make the numbers up. We wanted to win points. We now have a chance for the semi-finals but we need to work really hard."

Having heavily lost to defending champions Australia and fancied New Zealand already, and with games approaching against England, Ireland and West Indies, Bangladesh's chances of making the last four would appear slim, but at least they can now hope.

South Africa had beaten Sri Lanka and World Cup debutants Ireland before this game and their passage to the semi-finals, which had seemed inevitable, is now quite uncertain. They have four points and Bangladesh have two.

Bashar praised Aftab Ahmed and Mohammad Ashraful for their fearless approach to the South African attack after the duo shared a fifth-wicket stand of 76.

Man-of-the-match Ashraful dominated the innings with his entertaining knock of 87 from 83 balls, Aftab also played his part with a crucial 35 off 43.

"Ashraful played a wonderful innings for us and Aftab was a really important player for us too," Bashar said. "But we want him (Aftab) to get an 80 or a 90 rather than a brilliant 30 or 40."

Bangladesh fly out of Guyana on Sunday morning for their next match with England in Barbados on Wednesday.

Bangladesh dealt a potentially fatal blow to South Africa's hopes of qualifying for the World Cup semi-finals with a stunning 67-run victory in the Super Eights here on Saturday.

Bangladesh did the unexpected when they dismissed South Africa for a modest 184 on a slow pitch after having set a challenging 252-run target in their best-ever batting performance of the tournament.

Their first win over South Africa also threw the tournament wide open as more than four teams are now in contention for the semi-final berths.

Defending champions Australia lead the table with six points from three matches, followed by Sri Lanka (6/4), New Zealand (6/3), South Africa (4/4), England (2/3) and the West Indies (2/4).

Bangladesh, who beat India in the first round, found more than one match-winner as they batted, bowled and fielded with discipline.

"It's historic win," said Bangladesh skipper Habibul Bashar.

"We can now think of moving forward in the tournament. We lifted ourselves in this game and once we put up a good total on the board we knew we could fight."

Middle-order batsman Mohammad Ashraful played a key role as he smashed a quickfire 83-ball 87 to help Bangladesh survive South African paceman Andrew Nel's maiden five-wicket haul in the morning session.

Left-arm seamer Syed Rasel then built on Ashraful's effort, dismissing South Africa skipper Graeme Smith (12) and in-form Jacques Kallis (32) in his opening spell to put South Africa on the back foot.

Rattled by pace, South Africa then looked clueless against spin.

They found themselves under pressure, but failed to find the batsmen to rise to the occasion. They virtually went out of the game when they slipped from 63-1 to a pathetic 87-6.

"It's very disappointing," said Smith.

"We let ourselves down and we now need to work very hard from here on. We could never build a partnership, but full credit to Bangladesh's bowlers."

Left-arm spinner Saqibul Hasan did the maximum damage in the middle overs as he had Mark Boucher (12) caught by Rasel and then held a low return catch to account for Justin Kemp (seven) off successive deliveries.

Left-arm spinners Abdur Razzak (3-25) and Mohammad Rafique (1-22) also kept the batsmen silent with their tight spells.

Herschelle Gibbs, batting low down the order and with a runner because of a calf injury, top-scored with an unbeaten 56 in a below-par South African performance.

South Africa will meet New Zealand, the West Indies and England in their last three matches, while Bangladesh opened their account after four games.

Bangladesh were earlier struggling at 84-4 following Nel's triple-strike before middle-order batsmen Ashraful and Aftab Ahmed (35) steadied the innings with a 76-run stand. Nel finished with 5-45 off 10 overs.

Aftab was the first to go for big shots, smashing two sixes in an over from Kemp. This was the beginning of the onslaught as Ashraful then improvised brilliantly to help his team post a respectable total.

Ashraful completed his 11th half-century in style, lofting fast bowler Makhaya Ntini for a straight four and then hitting two more boundaries in the same over.

Ashraful struck 12 fours in his 83-ball knock, his best since scoring 94 against England at Trent Bridge in 2005.

Nel, dropped after going wicketless in his team's opening game against the Netherlands, looked in fine nick as he dismissed openers Javed Omar and Tamim Iqbal (38), and Bashar in his lively opening spell.

Teenager Iqbal often stepped into the realm of adventure, hitting Ntini for a couple of boundaries before falling playing one shot too many.

Bangladesh stun South Africa with 67-run thrashing
Sun Apr 8, 2007 3:15 AM IST

By Richard Sydenham

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (Reuters) - Bangladesh shocked world number one-ranked South Africa with a 67-run victory in the World Cup Super Eights on Saturday which has turned the tournament on its head.

The Bangladeshis, who progressed to the second phase against the odds after a surprise win over India in the group stage, followed their World Cup record total of 251 for eight by dismissing the South Africans for 184 at the Providence Stadium.

The result seriously damaged strongly fancied South Africa's hopes of reaching the last four from the second stage and gave fresh hope to hosts West Indies and England who had looked to be heading out of the competition.

It was a match which South Africa were expected to cruise to a comfortable two points and move towards the semi-finals from the round-robin Super Eights.

Instead, Bangladesh, who lost heavily to Australia and New Zealand in the last eight days, completely dominated to win their first points of the Super Eights and could even qualify themselves if they win their remaining games.

"It was a poor day for us, a very poor day, but credit to them," South African captain Graeme Smith told reporters. "If you don't get your basics right you don't deserve to win."

GENERAL UNORTHODOXY

Bangladesh's innings was dominated by a flamboyant 87 off 83 balls by 22-year-old number five batsman Mohammed Ashraful, the man of the match.

His innings shone with improvised stroke-play and general unorthodoxy. South African pace bowler Andre Nel claimed a career one-day best 5-45 but that was overshadowed by the youngster's exuberance and flair.

Bangladesh, ranked ninth from 11 in the one-day world rankings, had to recover from 84-4 in the 24th over. They eventually took 80 from their last 10 overs.

South Africa's innings began poorly when Smith (12) missed a cut shot to a straight ball from left-arm seam bowler Syed Rasel.

The match then swung dramatically from 63-1 to 87-6, as key man Jacques Kallis played a mistimed lofted on-drive and was caught off Rasel for 32 and Abdur Razzak bowled AB de Villiers (15) seven balls later.

SCENTED VICTORY

Ashwell Prince was run out, Mark Boucher followed a six over long-off to Saqibul Hasan with a catch to the same region next ball and then Justin Kemp lobbed up a simple return catch to Saqibul a ball later.

As the Bangladeshis scented victory, every wicket was met by excited dance jigs by a team whose average age is 23.

Herschelle Gibbs, who fielded only for a short period because of a calf strain, batted at seven with a runner. He bravely contributed 56 not out.

His stand of 45 with Shaun Pollock was ended by a run out after a sharp pick-up and throw at the stumps by Tamim Iqbal.

Charl Langeveldt made nine before missing a straight delivery from Razzak and the victory was rounded off when Makhaya Ntini holed out from a ballooning thick edge for eight, again off Razzak.

It was Bangladesh's fifth victory in their third World Cup -- and probably their best.

South Africa meet tournament hosts West Indies in Grenada on Tuesday and after three defeats already in the Super Eights, the hosts will be doubly determined to make the most of a golden chance to resurrect their campaign.

England, too, have been offered an opportunity to redeem themselves having lost to Sri Lanka this week and failed to bring any points through from the group stage. They face Australia in Antigua on Sunday.

The seven-week World Cup culminates in the April 28 final in Bridgetown, Barbados.

Tigers shock South Africa

Saturday Apr 07 2007 10:41

Bangladesh pulled off a massive shock in the World Cup Super Eights as they beat world-ranked number one side South Africa by 67 runs in Guyana.

The Tigers bowled their opponents out for 184 to complete a famous victory, with Syed Rasel and Saqibul Hasan taking two wickets apiece and left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak finishing with 3-25.

South Africa lost wickets at regular intervals, with 32 from Jacques Kallis and an unbeaten 56 from Herschelle Gibbs the only notable contributions.

Proteas skipper Graeme Smith had earlier won the toss and elected to bowl first and that seemed to be a wise decision as three wickets from Andre Nel reduced the Tigers to 84-4.

However, Mohammad Ashraful and Aftab Ahmed (35) repaired much of the damage with a fifth wicket stand of 74.

Ashraful was eventually dismissed late on for 87 from 83 balls, having struck 12 boundaries, becoming the fifth victim for the impressive Nel, who finished with 5-45 from his ten overs.

Players in breach of Code of Conduct

Tendulkar and Yuvraj given seven days to explain comments

Cricinfo staff

April 10, 2007

Sachin Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh have been given seven days to explain their conduct to the Indian board for having spoken to the media on former coach Greg Chappell.

"The notices seeking an explanation were sent yesterday and they have been asked to respond within seven days," a BCCI official told Cricinfo.

The two players were issued notices on April 7 asking them to explain their comments to the media which were in violation of the board's Code of Conduct for its players.

On April 4 The Times of India published an interview with Tendulkar in which he said that Indian cricketers would be disappointed with Chappell if he questioned their attitude. "I've given my heart and my soul for 17 years," Tendulkar was quoted as saying. "No coach had mentioned even in passing that my attitude was not correct. Cricket has been my life for all these years and will always be.

"It's not that we are defending ourselves," he added. "We do realise that we played badly and, as a team, we take full responsibility for that. But what hurt us most is if the coach has questioned our attitude."

Yuvraj's comment to a television channel on April 6, that all the players supported Tendulkar, was also deemed a breach of the code.

Pollard makes debut as Lara puts South Africa in

The Bulletin by Anand Vasu

Toss West Indies chose to field v South Africa
Live scorecard and ball-by-ball commentary

Brian Lara has had a fair bit to worry about all tournament but this crunch game against South Africa could be the one that turns the tide AFP

Brian Lara won the toss and chose to field in the crucial match between South Africa and West Indies at the National Cricket Stadium in St George's, Grenada. On a day where the forecast was for partial cloud cover, in conditions fairly typical of what we have seen all tournament, the stage was set for a clash that will have a serious impact on the semi-final line-up in this World Cup.

West Indies made plenty of changes to their team. They brought in Corey Collymore for Jerome Taylor, Kieron Pollard in for Dwayne Smith while Devon Smith, the local boy, gets a game. It's a huge day for Devon Smith, but even bigger for Pollard, who is making his ODI debut in this big match. South Africa, for their part, brought Andrew Hall into the team in place of Charl Langeveldt, and the big hitting Loots Bosman replaced Justin Kemp.

The pitch at this stadium has not been used in the World Cup so far. There's some grass on the pitch but it's dry, dead and rolled well into the surface. Michael Holding believed that the dark nature of the pitch suggested that there was some moisture under the surface. With uncertainty surrounding how the pitch would play, both teams will be cautious in their approach, unsure of exactly how to plan their innings.

South Africa are no longer the No.1 team in the world, having been beaten rather soundly by Bangladesh. They now face a team that has a history of dumping them in big games and tournaments. Though West Indies have struggled to get any sort of momentum going in this tournament, what was meant to be their extravaganza, it's not beyond them to lift their game against a team like South Africa.

Lara has repeatedly spoken of how his team has it in them to stun the best, and that the unpredictable tag sat lightly on their shoulders. With results not quite going their way, it's reached a stage where every game is a must-win. Some players wilt under this sort of pressure, but Lara has famously come up with some of his best knocks in just these circumstances. West Indies need just that. Equally important to West Indies' prospects is Chris Gayle, who is due for a score. When Gayle fires at the top West Indies, more often than not, put a healthy total on the board.

Teams
South Africa 1 AB de Villiers, 2 Graeme Smith (capt), 3 Jacques Kallis, 4 Herschelle Gibbs, 5 Ashwell Prince, 6 Loots Bosman, 7 Mark Boucher (wk), 8 Andrew Hall, 9 Shaun Pollock, 10 Andre Nel, 11 Makhaya Ntini.

West Indies 1 Chris Gayle, 2 Shivnarine Chanderpaul, 3 Ramnaresh Sarwan, 4, Brian Lara (capt), 5 Devon Smith, 6 Dwayne Bravo, 7 Kieron Pollard, 8 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 9 Ian Bradshaw, 10 Daren Powell, 11 Corey Collymore.

Cricket-India's Shastri wants fresh blood in national team

MUMBAI, India, April 9 (Reuters) - India's newly appointed cricket manager Ravi Shastri is backing the infusion of fresh blood into the team following last month's early World Cup exit in the Caribbean.

On Saturday, the 44-year-old Shastri was handed the task of guiding the team for next month's tour of Bangladesh after Australian Greg Chappell resigned as coach in the wake of the World Cup debacle.

"You need to look at youth in whatever walk of life at some stage. There is a shelf-period for everything," Shastri told CNN-IBN news television channel on Monday.

India, touted favourites back home, were knocked out of the World Cup in the group phase after defeats to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, prompting several former players and fans to call for large-scale changes to the team.

The powerful working committee of the board advised the selection committee to send a young team to Bangladesh under an experienced captain on Saturday, and on the same afternoon, Rahul Dravid was retained as skipper for the next three tours.

"If you have got to experiment and try and do something, do it against Bangladesh," said Shastri, who played 80 tests and 150 one-day internationals between 1981 and 1992.

The former captain, currently a commentator with a leading sports broadcaster, was given the role on an interim basis.

Starting on May 10, the tour consists of three one-day internationals and two tests.

Younis Khan Reluctant To Step Up As Skipper Of Pakistan Cricket Team Following Inzamam-ul-Haq's Resignation

Submitted by Rohit Bhandiye on Tue, 2007-04-10 05:25.

Pakistan vice-captain Younis Khan is reluctant to step up as skipper following the resignation of Inzamam-ul-Haq, a Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) source said on Monday.

The PCB will meet on Tuesday to discuss Inzamam's successor following their shock first-round elimination from the World Cup and subsequent death of coach Bob Woolmer which is being treated as murder by Jamaican police.

Inzamam, who was appointed in 2003 and quit on March 18, has pushed for senior batsman Younis to take over his old job.

"Younis is not comfortable leading the team at this stage as he believes he doesn't have the required widespread support within the team," the source said.

"He is also reluctant as he doesn't see wide support in the cricket community for him to replace Inzamam."

Younis lost some face last year when he refused to lead the team in the ICC Champions Trophy in India in place of the banned Inzamam.

He was dubbed immature and volatile after he changed his mind at the eleventh hour following reported differences with then chairman, Shaharyar Khan, and some players.

Shaharyar was, however, replaced by Nasim Ashraf, a smooth-talking bureaucrat two days before the team's departure and he managed to convince Younis to captain the side.

Younis had a miserable time in the Champions Trophy winning just one game and faced the wrath of the media and public.

Rashid Latif, a former Pakistan captain, felt that Younis should refuse the captaincy.

"I don't think this is the right time for him to come in. Some people obviously doubt if he is mature and strong enough to lead the team after the World Cup," Latif said.

"It would be better for him to concentrate on his batting and come in as captain when he feels comfortable and there is full support for him."

Former World Cup-winning captain Imran Khan backed Younis to take the job.

"He must not refuse. If he didn't want to captain he should not have accepted to become vice-captain," he said.

If Younis does refuse the captaincy, senior batsman Mohammad Yousuf, who has captained before would be the logical choice to step in but sources said that young all-rounder Shoaib Malik is also under consideration.

Former Test paceman Aaqib Javed was tipped by media observers as likely to be named as coach, succeeding Woolmer.

Pakistan were trying to arrange a one-day series with Sri Lanka next month in Abu Dhabi.

Aussie cricket star takes on Bollywood
Will it be a Bollywood hit?

Brett Lee
Australian international fast bowler Brett Lee has revealed his ambition to release an album in India by the year's end, Sound Generator can report.

The Cricket star, who played a big part in England's Ashes defeat over the winter, plans to release the set - which he began writing last year - to boost his career prospects in the Indian film industry, which he plans to become more involved in following his duet last year with Bollywood legend Asha Bhosle.

The track "You're The One For Me" was a runaway hit, reaching No. 3 on an Indian radio station chart, and Lee says he has further ambitions in India at a recent press conference in New Delhi.

"I have written three or four new tracks and my aim is to release an album over here by this year," Lee said Monday (April 9).

"I have been into music for the last eight to ten years. Music for me is a pretty important part of my life," he said. "Definitely my aim is to star in a Bollywood movie but it has to be in a right time but it definitely will happen."

"A lot of this is new ground, and I guess it will make for an interesting case study," his manager Neil Maxwell added. "The move into music and films hasn't just dropped into his lap; it's been in the making for the past six years The first song was just scratching the surface."

"The focus is to build a platform for Brett to perform at Bollywood level after his career."

Justin Vaughan named chief executive of NZ Cricket
AFP

Tuesday, April 10, 2007 17:59 IST

WELLINGTON: Former Test player Justin Vaughan was named on Tuesday as the new chief executive of New Zealand Cricket.

Vaughan is a board member of New Zealand Cricket and chairman Sir John Anderson said he had all the attributes needed to lead the organisation.

He takes over in June from another former Test player Martin Snedden, who has been appointed as chief executive of the organisation staging the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.

Vaughan played in six Tests and 18 one-day internationals between 1992 and 1997. He qualified as a doctor and currently heads a medical technology company.

"I have had a long association with cricket and hope to build on the hard work which has taken cricket in New Zealand from a largely amateur structure in the early 1990s to the professional sport that it is today," Vaughan said.
