Steven Smith, hands down. Smith has scored runs versus every opposition he has played against. He has test hundreds in England, South Africa, the UAE and Australia. What more can you ask from a raw 25-year old who wasn't even thought of as a complete batsman till about a couple of years ago. The man is just in his mid-twenties, but has the head of a Michael Hussey. Look at the way he has no qualms whatsoever, no matter what the opposition, what the venue.

Joe Root has issues with spin and fast bowling. Fast as in, pacy, incoming deliveries. I don't see him doing well against the likes of Australia any time in his career. Steven Smith is a little luckier, since he doesn't have to face Johnson and co. But that doesn't take away anything from his temperament and capability.

Especially considering his recent performance in the ODI series against South Africa where he has scored 67, 104 and 73* and prior to that he scored 97, 55, 58, 77 and 101 against Pakistan. Not to mention that Smith is an excellent bowler as well.

Not just Joe Root, Steven Smith is the best under-26 test batsman in the world today, in tests. I rate batsmen considering their test batting.

Joe Root has been performing decently, no denying that. But he just isn't on the same same level as Smith. I don't think his [Root] performance against India can be reflective of his skill, because India is a shaky team at best.

As for Root bowling, he's sub par. His bowling average is over 50 in tests and ODI.
