I will have to go with India's best captain, due to his excellence during his captainship, aggression during batting and ODI performance. Sure he couldn't handle a bouncer, but he is easily one of the world's best batsman in all forms. Ganguly was also a fairly decent bowler, getting 100 wickets in ODI. If we are looking at tests alone, Laxman is obviously superior. Anyone who argues otherwise is ill informed. However, we are looking at there overall cricket performance, which includes ODI and T20, both in which Ganguly was far superior than Laxman. Laxman's ODI average of 30 was horrendour for a batsman of his capability. Ganguly is also quite more outspoken, and appears on several news channels portraying his views on the cricket world. In general, appreciation depends on many factors and comes from all circles. In what we call the critics circle (where the litmus test holds), Laxman is indeed rated higher (in tests), but for everyone in general, Ganguly has offered more services to the Indian cricket team
