That's not a loss, ok...😆 zyada sal aaya toh tax bhi dena padega na...
As he leads you towards the showroom, he suddenly stops and holds the door open for an aged customer. "I don't own this place. I am an employee like all the others," says Amar Pawar, director and chief operating officer, Toyota Lakozy.
From being an electrical engineer to selling television sets, Pawar's career has been an unpredictable one. "After I got a degree in electrical engineering, I was convinced that I did not want to pursue a career in it. So, I did a management course from Symbiosis in Pune," explains Pawar, who started working with Onida TV in their sales department. After a brief stint in Dubai, Pawar returned to home turf in Nagpur where he was suddenly approached by an entrepreneur friend who wanted to start a four-wheeler dealership and wanted him to handle the whole business. "I told him that I only knew about tyres in a four wheeler and nothing else," smiles Pawar. "I was ready to put in all the hard work but it was a risk." Though he spent just six months with the company, he realized that the automobile industry was his true calling.
After a brief association with an auto company, Pawar spent a few days in search of a job. "A family member posted my resume on job portals and through that Toyota Lakozy contacted me," says Pawar. He was recruited as the general manager, operations, in the Japanese firm. That was the start of his relationship with Toyota Lakozy. It was only few years later when he was recruiting people that he realised that he had been quite inexperienced when he came onboard. "I asked my boss about his choice in hiring me, and he told me that despite lack of experience, I was more informed about automobiles and handling a business," says Pawar proudly.
Hard work is the best path to success, but Pawar believes that hard work combined with a mind open to learning new things is what has worked for him."If I don't know something I try to learn it, master it," says Pawar. "Ignorance is bliss, because then you just take the risk and come out successful. But if you know everything then you may close your mind and not make an effort to learn new ways."
Like many others, Pawar was also of the view that one should not work in the same organisation for more than three years."I used to think that after three years neither can you give the company anything more nor can the company provide you with further growth. I assumed it would become a boring routine if one stayed longer in an organisation," says Pawar. However, this changed after he joined Toyota Lakozy. "There is so much dynamism in the job that all the plans of quitting after three years went out the window," he smiles. "Every customer is different and you can't stick to the same style-sheet for everyone," explains Pawar. "I have to constantly be on my feet for new strategies, new initiatives to keep customers happy. There is no time to get bored!"
Handling a showroom, which is a landmark in the area, dealing with employees and customers is not an easy job. He says since they all are employees here, there is no 'owner-servant' attitude. "We keep a check on each other and also help each other. I may be their boss but I don't hesitate to learn from my team," he says, as he signs a few papers. "We have to be accessible to the customers to make sure that they are comfortable dealing with us." With stiff competition in the industry, it is important that they keep the customer loyalty rate high. "I meet every person who buys a vehicle from us. Before they walk out the door with the keys, I congratulate them and also pose for a picture with them and the vehicle," says Pawar who still remembers his first customer ' Dayanand Shetty of the famous TV series, CID.
"We are one of the 150 companies under the Toyota Lakozy banner and have similar work culture. That's why all our employees have uniforms," says Pawar. "We also follow the Anzec method which means safety first. This is an important message that we give to all our customers and also to employees."
Between handling customers, attending conferences and coming up with new ideas, he finds himself a busy man. "Whatever extra time I get, I spend it with my two-year-old son. He already recognises car keys and hands them over to me when he wants to go for a drive," says the proud father. Being in the auto industry has allowed him to pursue his passion for cars. "I always wanted to drive a racing car. That's why I have signed up for the Toyota Etios motor racing trophy. Hopefully, I will get to drive on an Indian track," smiles Pawar. Seminars and meetings take him to various destinations and he takes this opportunity to spend time with his family. "I might take them to Dubai next. I am sure it has changed drastically since I worked there," he says.
Pawar says he has found strength through his guru Radhaswami. "I have been able to get by all hardships because of my faith and his messages. He is an inspiration for me," says Pawar, who turned vegetarian to become a follower. A regular on the jogging track, he also loves cooking for his family. "Though I am not allowed entry into the kitchen, I ensure that I cook," laughs Pawar, while mentioning that his son loves his culinary adventures. He is also taking Japanese classes to make communication with his managing director, Yuji Kuroki and his counterparts easier.Originally posted by: astonish
