"I've grown up watching CID and reading dad's scripts"

They are the backbone of any television production. They not only conceive award winning shows but also have the foresight to gauge their potential. They also provide the moolah that keeps these shows alive and kicking for years. In this column, we speak to some of the most vibrant producers who have made shows that have set trends in the television industry and try to find out what makes them tick!

Expectations rise sky high when a famous scriptwriter's son steps into the same profession. Salil, son of writer-cum-producer-cum-director BP Singh (whom the media industry looks up to as an epitome of perfection), has ventured into television with scriptwriting and direction. He has already scripted a few episodes of CID, and his first short film titled, The Girl which got selected for the New York Film Festival.
For Salil, television is not only a passion, but a medium to lend out his creative instincts since the age of ten. And that's not all; he's also acted on the small screen during his college days.

Kavita Shyam spoke to the budding scriptwriter'Excerpts.

"Frequenting film festivals has molded my aspirations"

My training ground''
As a child, I used to visit sets and slowly harboured interest for writing and direction. I did my schooling from Bombay Cambridge School and graduated in psychology from K. C. College. I have also done a course in script writing from Xavier's Institute of Communication (XIC) and later got myself enrolled in FTII, Pune for a one-year course in film direction. Also, reading my dad's scripts has made me what I am. Besides, I used to frequent film festivals which played a crucial role in molding my aspirations.

My career so far...'
I was an assistant director for Sony's Achanak 36 Saal Baad (two years back). I have made a short film titled, The Girl, which was screened overseas and got selected for the New York Film Festival 2004. Meanwhile, I used to pen many scripts, but most of them got rejected. So finally, after a lot of hard work, when one of my scripts got approved for Sony's CID, I was on cloud nine.

CID'
I've been following CID for years, which has helped me in getting the screenplay and dialogues right. It helps me know the essential ingredients to make a successful show. My first script for CID, that I just mentioned, was Monsoon Mystery.

My acting stint'..
I've acted in serials when I was in college. I have acted with Arun Govil in Kya Yeh Sach Hai (for UES channel) and then I did Dehshat for B4U channel (eight years back), followed by Khakhi (Channel Gold). I have also done a cameo of a drug addict in CID.

TV is'.
In my opinion TV has the potential of doing more than what its doing now. Earlier, television was an ocean of new ideas but today the programming quality is suffering, though the quantity is improving. The sensibility and pace of shows has changed too. I feel channels like NDTV Profit and Star One who promote and encourage short film directors and scriptwriters are doing a great job as they

"Writing and direction go hand in glove"

recognize the true talent in India. There are hordes of channels cropping up everyday wherein the talent gets lost also its very important to market oneself if one has to reach anywhere.

My belief'.
I believe that writing and direction go hand-in-glove. Also, if one is a good writer, then there is no dearth of work on television.

My inspiration'.
My dad, but of course! He is a powerhouse of knowledge. He is someone who is respected tremendously as a senior person and knows the working of the industry thoroughly. Besides dad, Shreeram Raghavan (director of the Bollywood flick Ek Hasina Thi) whom I've earlier assisted has been a great teacher for me.

Dreams unlimited'
Since childhood I wanted to get into the creative field so I'd write short stories since the age of ten. I am also into penning a few scripts for films. So let's see, if all goes well then I would want to make films, which is my ultimate goal. I want to be a successful director in future.

Other passions
I am a total sports freak. I love to play cricket, football and baseball. I read books (adventure based novels) and have the habit of writing my thoughts everyday. Catching up with movies is also something that I do in free time.

Sorry if you all have read it...I found it just now

What makes C.I.D so special !!!

It started way back in Jan 1998, and since then it has been the longest-running crime thriller. I often wonder what makes the viewers glued to SONY TV even after 12 years. Yes, it is the Dramatic and completely unpredictable plot and story line of C.I.D.The complexities faced by the CID team at every stage makes it even more interesting to viewers. It makes me think as well how the smallest of clues can help to solve a case altogether!!! This is one serial which is followed by people from all age group right from children to old people.

C.I.D., whenever we hear of this name we can only think of Sony Entertainment Television. The Series is about a team of detectives working for Crime Investigation Department in Mumbai. It is about the hard-core police procedural stories dealing with investigation, detection and suspense. The team is lead by ACP Pradyuman (Shivaji Satam,he is a renowned Indian TV serial and film actor). This serial is regarded as the longest running TV series in India. B.P.Singh is the creator and director-producer of CID, and has also produced hit horror series Aahat.

So coming back to the all important question' What makes CID such a huge HIT'.? Well it's often said that the Characters of a serial makes huge impact on the viewers and also ensures that the audience stays connected with its characters. No doubt that story is the backbone, but characters make the story alive."Dekh kya rahe ho Daya , Darwaza tod do". I am sure that everyone remembers this famous dialogue and Mr Daya. Many of you might not know that he was the champion of discus throw from State Maharastra in 1994. He plays one of the most important characters in CID and is very well supported by Abhijeet and Fredricks (Freddy). Viewers love the way Abhijeet tries to flirt with Dr.Tarika , Freddie gets so worked up whenever they get a case connected to bhooth/atma and who can forget Dr.Salunkhe who frequently argues with ACP Pradyuman, and Abhijeet, but does have a soft spot for the C.I.D team. There is this unique quality of every character that ensures that the Audience stays connected with the show.

This Serial has come to a point where viewers discuss and debate on their favorite cases and also repeat their famous dialogues from the show. No doubt that the serial has been there for over a decade, but the Creative team is surely taking it to the next level in terms of content. Every season C.I.D has proved that it's here to stay for a longer duration and it's not over till it's over. Also one must give credit to the audience who have been following the show and making these characters so popular.

Hmm .. nice article 😊 ..

Daya is well supported by Abhijeet and Freddy 😊 ...
People love the way Abhijeet flirts with Taarika 🤢 ..
what on earth is this ? They stereotyped Abhijeet to be a flirt ... jahaan dekho the first thing they right about him is "he likes to flirt with T" .. .. he's so much more .. he's a supercop, ACP's rt. hand, the perfect shooter, the lethal charm and so much more ..

Chasing Criminals, Cracking Cases

What is it about CID that despite the simple plots, it stays popular?
A COUPLE IS having dinner at an upscale restaurant and talking about their impending wedding. After sipping the wine, the guy falls to the ground, and the girl shrieks in shock and horror. A nearby diner makes a call, "Hello, CID?" Aditya Srivastava: Senior Inspector Abhijeet The sharpest member of the team, Abhijeet is intense yet vulnerable, with a dark past Shivaji Satam: ACP Pradyuman The tough, no-nonsense boss, has no time for anything except his duty BP Singh: DCP Chitrole The producer of the show, Singh occasionally features as DCP Chitrole, who has a lovehate relationship with the team Dayanand Shetty: Senior Inspector Daya He's burly, dependable and never opens doors (he always breaks them down)

That is pretty much how every episode of CID begins. On air for the last 15 years on Sony, the show has acquired a dedicated following, with fan clubs on Facebook and numerous Twitter handles. And now, it looks like the show will be made into a film. Producer BP Singh, the man behind the series, who also plays a character, DCP Chitrole, says, "The plan to make

CID into a film has been on for the last four years, and now we have a budget for it."

But what is it about the show that despite the simple, sometimes ludicrous plots, its popularity never flags? How did the 'team' come together?

ACP Pradyuman, and senior inspectors Abhijeet and Daya, the pivotal characters of the series, have been with the show since it began, and have become household names by now. Marathi theatre veteran Shivaji Satam who plays ACP Pradyuman, the boss of the team, had worked with Singh on many projects. Prominent among these was the Marathi crime show Ek

Shunya Shunya, which was popular in the late '80s. "Having worked with BP on so many projects, I had to be part of CID," says Satam. Aditya Srivastava, or senior inspector Abhijeet, though introduced in the show as a criminal, was later absorbed into the CID team. "I had agreed to only 26 episodes. In 1998, I was also doing some films, but BP sir gave me the flexibility to come and go as I felt like. But I began to enjoy the role of Abhijeet, and so stayed on," says Srivastava. Singh wanted Srivastava to be part of his team after seeing his work in Ram Gopal Varma's Satya.

Dayanand Shetty (Daya) was spotted by Sanjay Shetty, a member of the CID production team, in a community play, in which Daya was adjudged best actor. So impressed was Singh with Shetty that he finalised him five minutes into the audition! Loved by children for his habit of breaking doors, Shetty says, "None of us thought the show would run for so long. We had enough episodes to last for around two years, but slowly our popularity began to rise, and we kept doing more and more episodes." This tall, strapping man, who also featured in last year's dance reality show

Jhalak Dikkhla Jaa, says that "our show is such that four generations can watch it together."

But how exactly did Singh conceptualise the show? Following the success of Ek Shunya

Shunya, based on real crimes and a great deal of coordination with the police, Singh wanted to expand the scope of the genre. "Many real-life cases are sub judice and there are other complications. Fiction gives us more freedom," he says. The pilot episodes of CID (made in the

early '90s) featured actual forensic doctors. It was while working closely with them that Singh got attracted to the science and decided to create the forensic science department in the show, headed by the entertaining Dr Salunkhe (played by Narendra Gupta of the violently dyed hair).

NOT STARRY-EYED The CID team is aware of the adulation that viewers have for them, but refuse to be swayed by it. Neither Srivastava, nor Shetty are Web-savvy and don't know about the various fan clubs on Facebook. However, they are naturally pretty happy about it. For Shetty, "ignorance is bliss. I think it's good that I'm away from the online stuff," while the reticent Srivastava says, "I don't think a lot about this."

However, Satam is active on Facebook and Twitter and tries to keep track of online activities. Even after playing the same character for 15 years, Satam says he isn't bored or exhausted. "Our show will run till God becomes tired of CID," he says with a laugh.

AND THE CULT GROWS...

There are more than ten Facebook pages on CID; one of them is exclusively devoted to Daya's slaps (Daya is pretty generous when it comes to slapping criminals on the show). Shetty remains a particular favourite with kids.

Remembers Delhi-based student Shantanu Argal, 25, "When I was a kid, I wanted to grow up and be like Daya as he was always this largerthan-life character."

Seven-year-old Abhay Verma, who studies in Bombay Scottish School, is an ardent follower of the show. "I love detective serials and CID is my favourite. I love Daya because he's big and strong, and manages things properly," he says. Adds BP Singh, "We knew early on that kids love our show, which is why we've always been careful with the show's presentation."

Grown-up fans often find the show amusing but enjoyable. Says Urvashi Singh, a 29-year-old Mumbai-based lawyer, "It's predictable and the endings are always so stereotypical ' the suspect is always getting slapped in the end! It's quite funny actually. But it's entertaining." Her favourite character is Abhijeet as she finds him rather intense.

In the show, the CID officers don't have surnames and there no focus on their personal lives. The show did try to focus briefly on personal plots, which included one where Satam shot his criminal son. "That episode was emotionally draining," recalls Satam. However, Shetty feels that the prime focus of CID is crime, and personal tracks don't merit a mention.

Among the crew's most memorable episodes is one that was shot in a single take and lasted 111 minutes! It has found a place in the Guinness Book of

World Records.

It isn't that CID has enjoyed a smooth run all these years. As producer BP Singh says, "There were times we thought the show would go off the air." But it always survived.

While fans wait for the film, expected to go on the floors by the end of 2012, they will have to make do with watching the show, and hearing ACP Pradyuman's famous lines, "Teen khoon karne ke liye, ab tumhe sirf phaasi hogi, sirf phaasi!"
