Reality shows too vulgar for family viewing?

MUMBAI: One reality TV show telecasts a suhaag raat, in another an anchor derides a participant calling him ''impotent''. Reality, as shown by some prime-time shows, is no longer palatable to the Indian family, thanks to the generous serving of foul language, sexual innuendo and abusive talk dished out to viewers in an attempt to plump up TRP ratings.

Sexagenarian Nirmala, who ordered her 25 year-old son to switch off the TV after watching the suhaag raat scene on 'Bigg Boss' early this week, is indignant. ''This show has gone from bad to worse and cannot be watched by any family together,'' she says. Adds another viewer: ''From the time Dolly Bindra has come on the show, it has become worse. She uses such obnoxious language. Clearly, the producers have let her loose just to hike TRPs. It's sad to see reality shows adopting such tactics to keep their viewership.''

Participants, too, agree. Rahul Bhatt, a participant who was voted out, said, ''There are quite a few women who stage manage to stay longer in the house,'' he says. ''I was not given any script; the only brief I got was to be myself. But certain instances made me realise that it is indeed staged to gain TRPs, which includes Ali and Sara's wedding.

I'm happy to be out.'' So, if it's staged, is the bad language scripted? Jalees Sherwani, a member of the Film and Television Writers Association, blames the producers and channels. ''I don't think any writer would write that kind of regressive and foul language,'' he says.

In the case of 'Rakhi Ka Insaaf', the show has gone even beyond the alleged script. This week, Laxman Prasad, a 24-year-old participant from Jhansi, died after Rahki humiliated him by calling him impotent in public. While the family has alleged suicide and Rakhi has been slapped with a case for using objectionable language, she, as well as the channel and producers, maintain that ''that Laxman was suffering from TB and died because of acute pneumonia''.

Interesting infomation then do viewers prefer daily soaps

It's no more a small screen now. Or perhaps, it's not a small space anymore. With increasing no. of reality shows, spewing voyeurism and literally taking over our lives, it's clear that the idiot box is getting insensitive to our perceptive senses.

And it doesn't seem to stop there. A fatal and a dangerous road seem to be carving out as a consequence of these shows. The recent death of 22 year old Lakshman Prasad, reportedly a result of Rakhi Sawant's reality show Rakhi Ka Insaaf is a glaring example of today's twisted trends that's pervading most of the reality shows. Lakshman was reportedly so upset with the cruelly indecent remark by Rakhi Sawant on the show that he went into a depression before drinking himself to death.

Whether it is scripted or no isn't the question here. Celebrity judges on most of the reality shows, display lack of compassion and extreme rudeness towards lesser talented contestants on national TV, which doesn't go down well with the ordinary and vulnerable participants who come on the show. As a result, the dispirited contestants often go into depression. Shows like Emotional Attyachar and Bigg Boss that air explicit content might not be considered suitable for kids and family, yet they are up there. Therefore the question: isn't it high time that a regulatory board for television comes into being? Can a borderline be drawn on what is suitable for viewers of national television? We spoke to several personalities on the topic and the response that we got was varied.

Rakhi Vijan, a former Bigg Boss contestant says, "TV channels are stooping down to disgusting levels for TRPs. There was a time when we used to do television shows which were targeted only at the family and kids. We did clean shows like Hum Paanch and became the nation's sweethearts. Today television has become so vulgar that I think the censor board should be shifted from films to TV. Films have become much cleaner in comparison."

Another Bigg Boss contestant Sambhavna Seth believes that there is a censorship process that Bigg Boss already follows while editing. "Bigg Boss show is a super-edited version. You get to see only a fraction of what actually happens inside the house. You can see what happens in the bedroom but do you know what happens in the bathrooms. You should be thankful to Colors for actually censoring that stuff".

Debojit Saha being a contestant of both, singing reality shows (where he had to face candid criticism of celebrity judges) and Bigg Boss (which is known for its crude content), is a person who has seen the worst of both worlds. The singer very honestly says, "People watch such shows because they enjoy such masala stuff. TV channels know their target audience and show vulgarity to increase their TRPs. But I don't think having a regulatory board for television would be of any use. The people who boycott such shows are the ones who would watch it behind closed doors". However Debojit proposes a milder alternative way out. "The media and audiences in general should issue a letter to these channels asking them to go a little sober and modify the content to suit the national audiences".

Prolific Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam, the first politician to appear in Bigg Boss says, "The kind of reality TV content that is going on air presently in shows like Rakhi Ka Insaaf, Emotional Attyachar or Bigg Boss 4 is extremely vulgar and below standard. These television channels can go to any extent in the race for TRPs. There are more than 500 private channels presently and trust me there will be many more reality shows in the near future so things will only get worse".

Nirupam is clearly in favour of a regulatory board to monitor television content and has been working towards it. "I have personally raised this issue 2-3 times in the Parliament. Earlier the Information and Broadcasting Ministry was completely controlled by the Government. But when a closed sector comes out it open there is a big competition with public and private sectors vying to take control. We need to have a board that is entirely independent of the government like we have the TRAI in the telecom sector". Ask him if he sees something like this for the television Industry as well in the near future and he says, "I am sure there will be opposition but we are making efforts for a new broadcasting bill to be passed on a regulatory regime which can monitor the content on television since presently there is no limit or borderline set".

Even the common man seems to agree that there should be a limit set. Shilpa Gilda, a housewife says, "There was a time when we used to feel embarrassed even if a petty kiss would appear on TV. Today we are in constant concern of when something obscene will pop up putting us in a spot esp. with children around."

Another avid television watcher Anuradha Bajaj adds, "Reality shows have entirely changed the meaning of entertainment. The level of abuse, assault and exposure on television is alarming". Ask her why she is still glued to the idiot box and she says, "It's like the smoking addiction. You know its killing you but you can't quit it either".

Like Chandan Dixit, a senior bank executive says, "Today if I watch Bigg Boss with my family and kids, it surely seems vulgar. But if I watch it alone I enjoy it".

Television being a huge mass-media which reaches our bedroom, censorship in this medium could be relaxed as compared to the stringent censorship adopted by films. But at the same time the television channels, reality shows and the celebrity judges need to reflect a sense of responsibility that comes with their job.

Thanks for the Article chalhov.

somehow guessed a bit when saw the heading of the Article "Reality shows too vulgar for family viewing?" guessed that BB and RKI would be part of it. first of all i got to know of RKI from the Article posted in IF. then my reaction was what???? "Rakhi" ka insaaf??
yesterday i happen to be switching all the channels and came through the news channels(it wasnt the SBS,SBB timings, it was in daily regular news) the channels people having a Talk on RKI ?and vulgarity shown in reality shows. lol it was almost of 1hr.
Was that really nessesary??? Are they going to make the show stop??? when no , they why? The news channels were itself giving enough publicity or u ask me more than enough publicity??? and the channel garniring enough TRP of it!!!!

I totally agree on the addiction part😆 but cant help it either.

Thanx for sharing the article.Infact saw it today on paper font page of Banglore Entertainment and in Mirror. can not agree more with it and in the name of gaining some trp these reality shows are going crazy to show anything. reading abt them makes me feel disgust for them then leave watching them.

read some day back in NP about Rakhi for the same show. Now human right activists are waking up since one person died coz of social trauma after coming on Rakhi show😡. i mean why get these kind of s**** broadcast at first palce. I m not aware but guess there isnt any censor board for Tv industry..one of the biggest/growing and potentially very important in terms of bringing change and upliftment to many sections if the medium is used properly..

God my fam. used to watch BB but not this season😃.. though myself a big fan of Dabaang/SK (yet to watch Dabangg) but not gonna watch BB at any cost guess thats better for my sanity..

Edit: ques not related to article or CB- koi bata sakta hai Supernatural series kaha mil sakte hain net pe..i mean do we get that as we get some CB episodes..tried but cudnt get it..

Thanks Chalhov for the thought-provoking articles. Glad to say we never watch BB, and also are very conscious what we watch esp when our small kids are around! This, inspite of us having 2 diff cable connections.

However, this is a serious problem in India, where still there is only one tv in most homes, and joint family tv-watching time continues. Kids grow up so fast watching this kind of junk.

In a way, taking it to CB, in some ways the CB storyline was also horrific - sisters sharing husbands, eyeing sister's husband, woman sacrificing all. Even this is abuse, if not verbal. What saved CB is Kanha and the purity of love shown by RaDev.

I really do feel that TV also needs a censor board. E. G. On Pogo last weekend, Jab We Met was on air. Now while overall its a fun film, the story itself is a love story, with a long kiss at the end. Is this okay for a kiddies channel? Or am I just being old-fashioned here? Just don't understand what is happening these days.

Chalhov thanks for the article. It does not matter whether it is reality show or a fiction show........all of them are geared to TRP. The channels will do anything for TRPs.
