Actors get extra choosy

By A.L. Chougule

Most Bolly-wood actors slog during the initial phase of their careers but become extremely choosy when success comes their way. Now many successful television stars are also following in the footsteps of their Bollywood counterparts by getting extra choosy about their roles. Take for instance Mona Singh who shot to fame with Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin. She has not done a single serial after Jassi in the past two years. Instead, after winning the Jhalak Dikhla Jaa show she is busy hosting reality shows. Iqbal Khan shot to fame with Kaisa Yeh Pyar Hai. He was the main protagonist of Karam Apna Apna but quit the show to get married and stayed away from serials for almost a year. Akaashdeep Sehgal, better known as Ansh Gujral of Kyunki, apparently refused many roles till he was offered the lead character in Kuchh Is Tara.

There are several actors who quit serials at the peak of their popularity and have waited for months for meaty roles. Manish Goyal quit Bhabi after he discovered a dancer in him in Nach Baliye where he finished second. It's more than two years now that Manish has not been seen in any serial. Neha Mehta quit Mamta six months ago and is yet to be seen in another serial.

Roshni Chopra is on a break from Kasamh Se. While her return in the show is a matter of conjecture Roshni is busy participating in and hosting reality shows. Shweta Kwatra remained away from serials for more than a year after quitting Kahani. She returned on TV in Kumkum in a cameo which ended six months ago. But she is happy doing nothing and is waiting for a good role. Gurdeep Kohli quit Sindoor and joined Bhabhi six months later. A few weeks ago she also walked out of the afternoon daily without bothering about when the next assignment will come her way.

At a time when there is lot of competition and newcomers are walking away with lead roles in most shows, is it wise to take a break? Doesn't competition worry these actors? "Competition will always be there. It existed six years ago when I did my first show and with more people joining the acting profession it will increase further. But opportunities are also increasing with more channels entering the entertainment fray," feels Akaashdeep. He has not done more than a couple of serials in six years because Akaashdeep has always been choosy. "There is no dearth of offers but for my own growth I need to pick the best of roles," he adds.

Iqbal says after doing multiple shifts for three years he badly needed a break. "Besides, I didn't want to do any kind of work that would attract criticism. I don't bother about competition. Let others do five shows but I am happy doing one good show," he says. Iqbal further says that during his year long break he was offered lot of shows. "But all were same daily family dramas which I didn't want to do. I was looking for something really different and fresh and I didn't mind waiting for it. Chhoona Hai Aasman came my way and it was exactly the show I was looking forward to," he adds.

Mona also hasn't had a good offer since Jassi. "Nothing really exciting has come my way. It's been a conscious decision to keep away from acting because I don't want to do a regular daily," she says firmly. She also kept away from serials because she was signed for a film which didn't work out. She still nurses the dream of working in films and Mona says something positive may happen at the right time. "Otherwise I am happy anchoring shows. I am also under contract with Sony to promote their various properties," says Mona.

Manish also will not settle for run-of-the-mill shows, "I don't mind waiting for a good role for another year because I want my comeback show to be bigger and better than my previous shows," he observes.

Since television viewers have a short memory, will being out of sight for a long time not affect their recall value? "Not really," says Manish.

"There is so much of reality TV happening that most popular TV actors are seen here, there and everywhere." Mona says she is still remembered for her Jassi role. "I don't think the recall value diminishes if you remain away from serials for some time," she feels.

Iqbal puts it succinctly, "Either you keep worrying about competition and recall value or concentrate on doing what you think is best for you. I think maintaining one's exclusivity works better than over exposing yourself in a role that might harm your image."

Model, veejay and now a TV actor, Vivan Bhatena claims that a rewarding career and job satisfaction can take care of monetary worries. The charming actor admits upfront that "money is not a priority" and "working hard" is more important.

Even if that means, working round the clock for two prime time dailies (Maayka and Choona Hai Aasman). Considering he is playing the lead role in one of the serials and the bad guy in another, does Vivan even relate to the characters? "I am a lot like Shabd in Maayka. I am very relaxed, fun loving and chilled out," he offers.

Any off-screen chemistry with co-star Neha Bamb? And the dashing actor surprises you with a predictable, "We are good friends. There are even times when we fights like cats and dogs, but we patch up quickly. Sharing good rapport with your co-star helps make the scenes look convincing,"
he says.

The most important thing on his agenda is to get his Hindi right, he says. "I have been working in TV serials for a long time and I can see my spoken Hindi is getting better. It is a constant battle but I am rehearsing. There used to be times when I'd use a lot of English with Hindi, but that's changing," he admits.

On the personal front, Vivaan's getting married to longtime girlfriend Nikhila Palat on the 27th of this month. "I am busy with the arrangements for my marriage and I am very excited," he blushes.

What Iqbal Khan needs to learn from Shah Rukh Khan ?

Chhoona Hai Aasmaan may not be touching the skies on the TRP front but Iqbal Khan, who plays the character of Abhimanyu Adhikari cannot see the ground beneath him. Today the channel arranged for a press meet with Chhoona's cast and Bollywood actress Minissha Lamba, who is doing an episode in the show. Surprisingly Iqbal was the only one to snub the media.

The press kept waiting anxiously for the reclusive actor but a couple of hours later, it was announced that Iqbal Khan has refused to address the media and is not interested in giving bytes. The situation was salvaged by the lead actress Janvi Chheda and Vaani Sharma (another actress) who more than happily gave away their bytes. Strangely it was B-town actress Minissha Lamba who readily gave her precious time and addressed a disappointed media.

There is going to be a new track introduced in the show which is similar to SRK's Main Hoon Na where Iqbal is playing the role of a sports instructor. Being the lead actor of the show one expected Iqbal to turn up but it seems that the actor isn't game at handling the media unlike King Khan.

We wish he understands that attitude meets altitude.

Minissha Lamba to do an episodic in Chhoona Hai Aasmaan

Keeping up with the trend of promoting movies on television, B-town actress Minissha Lamba is set to make an episodic appearance on Star One's Chhoona Hai Aasmaan to promote her upcoming flick Shaurya.

Talking about her character, Minissha says, "My character on the show is same as it is in my movie Shaurya. My character's name is Kaavya Shastri who is a journalist. I will try solving a murder mystery. It is an episodic appearance. "

"It is a great way to link movies with television. This program is similar to Shaurya. The show celebrates all those unsung heroes who lay down their lives for our country. I believe that the promotion strategy is going to help both the show and movie", adds the actress.

Minissha loves watching Chhoona Hai Aasmaan, The Great Indian Laughter Challenge and Sarabhai v/sSarabhai. Talking about the sea-change that television has undergone she says, "Television has grown by leaps and bounds. It reaches every single home. People may not get time to watch movies but soaps have become their daily dose. The whole idea of coming to television is being accessible to the masses."

"The only difference between the TV and the big screen is the size", concludes Minissha.

As Star One's Chhoona Hai Aasmaan springs in a whole new level of freshness with the on-going murder track, the actors seem quite excited to re-live their college days and get back to the madness of being college brats. One such actress is Jhanvi Cheddha who will play a simple and sweet girl getting into the college as a student.

"I'm so glad to be out of the salwar-kameez and the bangles and the accessories, and I can finally be casual and chilled out in the show" exclaims Jhanvi. On the three sixty degree turn in the show, Jhanvi says, "Well, it is good that the Hawks have set out on a mission to protect the Defense Minister' grand daughter. If there was one thing that I wanted in my life, it was to get to my college life again. So I guess I could not have asked for more. I have not started shooting, but I heard that the entire team is having a lot of fun, and I can't wait to be a part of the craziness".

Recollecting some moments of her college days, the actress stated, "I was a complete brat in college, and I used to ace at being mischievous, which is contradictory to the character that I'll be playing on screen, where I'm simple and a sweet girl next door." How do you think the audience will accept the whole new change in the show, from the airforce back drop to the college life? "Honestly, I would really want to tell everyone that this is Indian television, you have to put your logic behind while watching the shows and just take it as it comes", opines the actress. She further adds, "Lets not debate on the character sketches and the way the story track flows, it is something that's just there for pure entertainment…."

Lastly, on the Minissha Lamba episodic in the show, Jhanvi stated, "I'm glad she's here, this will definitely help to promote the show".

Minissha's cameo in Choona Hain Aasman

Promoting her soon to release Shaurya, Minissha Lamba will be doing cameo a in the show Choona Hai Aasman. Minissha will don the role of a journalist like in her film. We spoke to the show's lead Daljeet Kaur who was present on the sets during the shoot.

"Her entry is going to bring about a major twist in the show. The whole team is going enter a college on a mission. Minissha will come there to examine the matter since she is an investigative journalist. Her role is going to be crucial though it is a cameo. Her character will be there for two episodes. She will have scenes with Iqbal. Khan ( King Khan )"

Daljeet is all praise for Minissha. "She is very good on the sets and very co-operative but she is not aware about how television works. After pack up somebody told her that we have done 8 scenes and she was like we have done so much work!"

But Daljeet missed the chance to convey her message to Minissha, "I could not get a chance to tell her that she is very nice person and that it would be our pleasure to work again with her."

The current track of the show has the team in quest of protecting the Defence Minister's daughter whose life is under threat in her college. They enter the campus by masking themselves.

The track featuring Minissha will be aired next week while her film Shaurya is releasing on April 4 2008.
