Hey girls, no question of butting in ... this is an episode discussion post and all discussions and views are welcome ... 😃

I think we're on pretty similar wavelengths as far as Umaben's character is concerned. Of course, there are dominating MILs in most of the current saas bahu shows on air but as far as I know, they have some reason or justification behind their actions... of course, some are purely mean-minded ... like the one in Housewife Hai? I don't follow any of the shows, so I really have no idea why the clashes happen. I did follow one show, Dor, recently, where the MIl wanted a working DIL so that she could take over her salary ... when the DIL kept the salary for her maayka, the MIL became wicked.
But here, because the rest of the show is very realistic, Umaben's character seems the only odd one out in being larger than life, like most soaps, rather than close to reality, like the rest are.

Also they have not made it clear ... what is her motivation? Is it just her ego and pride? Is it the greed for dowry from Thakkar Bhai? Is it vengeance and dislike only for Chhanchhan specifically?

If you look at Umaben within her own family, she is not evil towards her bahus. She controls them with a mixture of carrot and stick, especially for Ranjana, who is greedy and kaamchor, and with simple fear for Sanjana, who is simple enough to be terrorised. She is fairly decent with Kaumusi, apart from the usual barbs about how wonderful she is and how useless her bahus' maaykas are ... fairly standard practice among many MILs to criticise their bahus' families.

She keeps her sons under control as well, but through her husband ... the moment anyone o questions her, like Manthan did, Babuji supports Umaben's decision, even if he is not aware of the entire truth. So Babuji trusts her completely ... because of a time when she put her own dowry down to save the family from ruin. So there is a reason and foundation to his trust on her. But why she does not trust her own sons and keeps secrets from her own husband, that we don't know yet.

Umaben has projected her self as a social worker, leader of Mahila Mandal, a lady with progressive thoughts ... she tells her MM ladies that her bahus are free to join computer classes, but they don't want to ... to her bahus she portrays that she doesn't bother about pallu etc, it's Babuji who is strict ... again showing them that she is a progressive lady ...
I think she is not as conservative as the rules she enforces, suggest ... her rules are more to assert her domination and her authority than out of any sincere belief. I could be wrong here ... maybe she is conservative, but since she portrays herself as being progressive, she pretends that the rules are her husband's and not hers. Again a bit of a conundrum in her character ... She tries to portray herself as being something she is not ... in that, what is the real Umaben is not clear at all.

As for her dislike towards Chhanchhan, that started with the Purvi incident, and it shows that Umaben carries very deep grudges indeed.

Her first impression of Chhanchhan was unfavourable ... Chhanchhan accused her of bribing the temple priest ... which she DID 😛 ... then of seeking dowry and sugar-coating the demands with more acceptable terms ... which again she DID ... so Chhanchhan both times showed up her true nature, instead of allowing her to get away with her image intact.

That was a lot of analysis ... leaving it open to discussion now!!! 😆

Manav will be beaten by CC?

jyothi, that was in the precap. Manav sneaks back home at night, CC thinks he is a thief and starts beating him with a stick in the dark 😆

Sorry for butting in, Diya

Whenever I see UB on my screen i can't wait for her to get her comeuppance. 😡

But then for the sake of the story I want her to win the first round and succeed in creating some MU in the ChanMan relationship. I'll be selfish here...i want to see some good acting chops. The way Chch is right now..Sanaya can just sleepwalk through it. I want more challenging stuff because I know she can deliver and Anuj as well.

Honestly CVs have to be a little careful with UBs characterization and even Supriya the way it is being played although I guess thats probably her brief...the character is quickly becoming intolerable and unredeemble for many.

@bold ... that is so true!!! Currently, the role is a cakewalk for Sanaya ... she barely has to act, she can sleepwalk her way through it. There have to be more conflicts and issues coming up ... on the other hand, I hate seeing her cry 😭 Oh dear ... what a problem 😆

I think there should be some strain in the ChanMan relationship at some point ... leaving Umaben gleeful that her plan has worked ... but check out my long and very confused 😉 character analysis of Umaben ... I feel they have put in a lot of layers, but we need to see some background of where she's coming from and why, to make her character more real. Right now it is too 'wicked filmy saas' to be true.

hi dia, i'm tapkofying too late as usual, but this point is worth mentioning.. cc would have told everyone about the rotimaker anyway: she is used to speaking the truth and never getting punished..like she said, if she was wrong, the sarabhais would always educate her.. not punish her. so she is not afraid of being honest.

on the other hand, ranjana and sanjana and umaben are from a more conservative/regressive families where mistakes/self decisions were punished.. so there is more chance of everyone keeping secrets. (SN exactly the reason why manav kept his girlfriend a secret from the borisagars while everyone at sarabhais knew of the relationship) so i was surprised that the fool (because that is what the character is) blurted out the rotimaker news before cc.. it would have made more sense if cc herself explained it and the RS sisters looked faintly guilty in anticipation of ub's wrath.

i did not watch the last scene.. cringeworthy scenes make me change the channel.. but wow sanaya looked beyond gorgeous in that green saree.

True ... and Chhanchhan herself was clear they were not doing anything wrong.

While the others hide everything they do, because they're never sure what will be acceptable and what will not ... or like Manav did earlier, wheedle and charm his way around his mom so she agrees before she knows what he's doing ...

@blue - Exactly ... Manav only told his friend, Himanshu ... not a single member of his family knew about CC, while the first thing CC did was to invite him home and meet her family ... Manav mentioned the same thing to Himanshu after that meeting ... that everyone is so open and warm there, while in his house, no one dares to say anything without thinking a thousand times.

CC did explain it herself ... UB asked her how did they make the rotlas so fast ... CC promptly got the rotimaker and showed her. Sanjana blurted out about the ready made saree, not the rotimaker.

Very nice post! :)

UB is really a pain in the A** !
I feel so bad for poor CC. Hope Manav's return brings her some happiness in her otherwise-hell'ish sasural!!

Superb post Diya.

UB is really disgusting. She is leaving no stone unturned to hurt and humiliate CC.

But I think UBs plan will backfire this time too. Of course the intention was to humiliate CC and she has succeeded to an extent. CC did trip and fall in front of the guests but when her friends attempt to insult her further, UB will be left with no choice but to stand up for CC and support her because whether she likes it or not, CC is a part of the family now.

To sum it up for now -

There is a problem with UB characterization...Or the portrayal? Does the actress really fit the role?

They need to fix the background music...

Babuji needs to grow a spine. I was hoping he would have his own say, not agree to everything UB says or does but instead tactfully deals with UB and her whims...not necessarily giving in or offending her. That will be more interesting, if say, he is shown to be aware of what UB has been upto...but keeps quiet for whatever reasons. I found it really odd that he did not question UB on her decision to lay off Purvi's dad, someone who had been associated with their office for a long time. Wouldn't he have know what kind of person Purvi's dad really was, to doubt UBs claims?

Ranjana needs some romance in her life.😆

And most importantly, for CCs sake, and tv ratings 😛 Manav needs to get back pronto and continue his stalled love isstory😆

ps. And the last one - CC should air five days a week!
