What is Working for ChhanChhan

Hello Everyone,

My weekend post:

Past few days, the forum has been slightly weighed down by topics about various shortcomings in the show. We had some interesting discussions, now to add some positivity, I thought let's write down what is working for ChhanChhan instead. The following is my list:

- Sanaya and Supriya Pathak in pivotal roles. As we all know the "Jodi" in this show will be made by them 😉 Both of them are fabulous actors and we have already seen sparks flying when they share screen space. The producers went right here, by getting these two on board.

- Media Reviews and Articles- Almost all reviews about ChhanChhan have been good. Even the articles which are coming out now, barring a couple, are all writing about the progressive outlook of the show and heroine. The show is getting brownie points for tackling social issues in a more realistic and reasonable way. Good word in media is vital to get more audience for the show.

-The Ensemble Cast- The cast is made of good actors who have sunk into their characters and are enacting their roles well. Dadi, Rugved, ChhanChhan's parents, Uma ben's husband, Manthan, and even the three bahus are good in their role.

-The Dogs- The adorable dogs, Puch Puch, Anarkali, Dyanchand and Jahanpana are such stars. They have added so much charm and cuteness to the show. Even Chengaz and others which make special appearance are darlings. They are good actors too! 😃 This is the first show where the protagonist is a dog trainer. The dogs are also contributing to pushing the story forward.

-Promotions- SONY is not leaving any stone unturned in promoting the show. They are even showing ads in between IPL games and hopefully that will entice more people to see the serial once cricket season is over. There is a promo every week.

-Light Heartedness and Humor- This show is trying to keep the tone of the show light despite some drama. There have not been many heavy duty sentimental scenes and glycerin use. Humor can be done better, but at least we had a few laughs and smiles till now.

- Stabilized TRPs- I know that the TRPs are not super and we are not even in the top 10, but a new show, in a tough time slot, with no major romantic angle, IPL starting a week after launch, has not completely sunk. TRPs have stabilized at .8 and .9 and hopefully with the story becoming more gripping, more scenes between ChhanChhan and Uma Ben, and IPL being over, the TRPs will rise. Keeping my fingers crossed.

-Heroine with Perks- Refreshingly in the show ChhanChhan has supportive and loving family, adorable pets, she has close friends, is educated, has a job and speaks her mind. In the very first week it was established that ChhanChhan respects elders but will not back off if they are wrong. One does not see that often on TV. She is not the silently suffering sorts. ChhanChhan also has decent, normal clothes to wear, not a uniform in different colors! She can't cook and is not apologetic about it.

-ChhanChhan's Family- This is a positive because most of us have enjoyed Sarabhai family scenes, they are fun, give space to one another and share their problems and support one another. Thank god, at least till now, they have not shown Purvi or ChhanChhan hiding things and compounding issues!
Also, I like that ChhanChhan's mom is a modern woman with a job, how often do we see that and she is not in constant worry to marry her children or teach them household chores.

Introducing Layers to the Story- Now, I know there are many posts about the need for tighter script and gripping story, no denying there is lots of scope to improve. At the same time, there is slow introduction of the idea that things are not what they seem in Uma Ben's family. Intra-family feud and court cases, her three elder sons are not that happy, Borasagar family's fall and rise from financial ruin, Uma Ben's complete need to keep both finances and family members under her control, nobody is telling full truth to each other (except maybe Kaumudi Bahu) most are hiding something from the other. It has only been a month, we have to see what all is unraveled as the story progresses and will be fun to see ChhanChhan in this dysfunctional family.

-No Mama's Boy- So far Manav has been shown as someone who can have his way, without being confrontational. He can even can go against his mom, if she is in wrong. That is what he is doing by helping Purvi and Hitesh. He may not directly argue with him mom, at least not yet, but he still does not agree with everything Uma Ben says, he has a mind of his own and good persuasive skills. Have to see how he will convince the two families and ChhanChhan for marriage.

So, the above are some of the things I see as working for the show. I may have left out many things, so please join the discussion and add your points.

I am no PR for this show, but I really want it do well for my favorite TV actor Sanaya. When she and Supriyaji have signed up for it, there must be something in the script.
Now here's hoping for better acting and execution and much better tracks.

Please add your comments. Thank you.

I would like to highlight Dadi in this. Her character is particularly well done.

Very nice post !

I think you have covered everything ...the things which are working for me in this show are

- Sanaya and Supriya

- characterizations...am on the fence still abt Chanchan..she needs to be more real and less white. Umaben is more interesting and Manav's character is looking much better now.

- Dynamics in the Borasagar family

- ensemble cast

- Sarabhai family....Casting is perfect and .their interactions are cute but need to be toned down a little especially the family teasing Chanchan abt Manav scenes.

- Dialogues and screenplay...inconsistent...they are much better in the Umaben scenes but too cheesy and in your face in the romantic scenes. Everything needs to be spelled out mode needs to change to a more subtle mode

I would like to add that the PH is very experienced and I hope they know what is working and what is not. Sanaya's interview clearly indicated that they do know. I think they got caught on the wrong foot with IPL starting, male lead not being accepted and romance not being their forte also added to the woes. They have to prolong the romantic track till IPL ends and that is the major problem. Hopefully after that when the marriage happens, everything about the show will look up.

I love Chanchan's family, especially dadi. And Simple is adorable as well!

I'm not too sure about Indian shows but I feel like shows that are different often get lower TRPs than the typical ones with women dressed up in heavy saris and excessive jewellery adorned, often with no profession and completely dependent on their husbands.
