Hey Nethra ,since its all dead here, you might as well have to deal with my story. These day I only visit this thread and at time bollywood forum and bade.
Khair so Holi is supposed to be our new year, like Ugaadi you know. So its a feast..along with playing lot of colors...When young we would go crazy playing it even before it commenced. A day before holi is Holika dahan, where the whole thing is about burning the evil around you. Also the things burnt helps clear the air around...
Now on holi too much food, specifically gujia, pua, mal pua, dahi vade...some people make chicken , some mutton...some both apart from chola , aloo dum , pulao, puri...and what not.. You play and wish each other.
We generally put color on the feet of our elders, before putting it on cheeks or anywhere else, to seek their blessings for the coming year and they put a teeka on us...
So that's how it is..Meeting your elders, relatives , seeking their blessing, playing eating. We also invite people from other cultures , who dont celebrate for the feast and bit of colors..
Yeah....no one replied except you 😔
Oh, I did not know Holi is new year 😊
Does every home light a bonfire too....during holika dahan?
When I was young, in Delhi, we used to play holi with the neighbourhood kids. Although we did not celebrate at home, my father used to buy colours, gubbara and pichkari. My mother used to make her version of gujiya which used to have a filling of chana dal and gud....as snacks in between play. One week before holi, one of us used to definitely get coloured by random strangers while returning from school/office/shop.😆.
Wow...I am getting nostalgic. I was not fond of Diwali much..a little too noisy in Delhi 😆.....but Holi was love❤️.
P.S. Is holi celebrated in all states above Maharashtra? Including West Bengal?

Its not a home per se, its a community kind of thing, the burning of holika is done by a group of people say a like a society and people come their with their pooja stuffs to do the pooja,
Diwali is also love honestly and now people have really toned down the bursting of crackers.. Apart from that, the reason why i like Diwali is the aspect of lighting up Diyas, the lights , rangoli and ofcourse food.
Gujia is also made with some suji (mixed in khoya and milk filling) and also coconut(grated ones mixed in gud) filling
Actually Holi for us South Indians is not a function. But since I've been brought up in Mumbai it became a festival I celebrated. Visit the community Holika dehan and play Holi the next day.
Now i still go for the Holika dehan but land up only for the Holi lunch😆. But my boys have a blast playing Holi.
Asmi - are you a Bengali?
I was trying to avoid IF so that I stay away from the Ghum forum for a day😆

Oh I love the diyas , the phuljhadis etc....as also the one which has a string of crackers..what is it called? I was particularly intolerant to noise and in Delhi, it used to feel like your heart came out of your chest every minute with the amount of bombs being burst and into the wee hours😆....might have changed now as you said.
