Okay, so this is my review on Shiddat
Madhura agar tumhe spoiler se problem hain to tum yeh wala post ignore karna. 👍🏼
So the movie starts with Gautam (Mohit) and Ira's (Diana) wedding, FBs of their love story and Gautam making a toast. Jaggi (Sunny) who went there for free booze loves his words and dreams to find his dream girl at some point.
Three years later, during a national sports camp he meets Kartika (Radhika). That typical stalking with extra dose of modern thinking 🤢, then their friendship and eventual one night stand, he learns about her engagement. He tries to persuade her into calling off her engagement and she gives him enough reasons so that he understands it was nothing special. At the end she jockingly says, if he turns up during her wedding after 3 months, she will call off her wedding and he was free to whisk her away DDLJ style.
Starts the absurdity as Jaggi first tries the legal way but after facing rejection, joins the illegal migrant route. His path crosses with Gautam again, the later being an IFS officer. Throughout the movie Gautam tries to make him understand the error of his ways, even discloses that he and Ira are heading for a divorce but no avail. Jaggi practically jumps into the English Channel to reach Kartika, who BTW isn't even bothered about him. 🤢 🤢 🤢 When he calls her, at first she thinks he's joking and later gets horrified realizing he has practically jumped into the sea for her.
Later she gives in, says that she loves him too and calls off her wedding. Gautam uses his influence to send Jaggi to England via legal route but another migrant, who was close to Jaggi and knew about his whereabouts, in the police custody he blurts out everything to save himself and Gautam and Jaggi get caught. Gautam somehow manages to save himself and Jaggi hides himself in the plane but freezes to death. 😭 😭 😭
So in the end, Gautam gives Kartika the news, she breaks down and Gautam musters the courage to go to Ira and tell her that he doesn't want a divorce. The film ends with one year death anniversary of Jaggi as Kartika, along with Gautam and Ira and his other friends dance and celebrate his memories. 😭 😭 😭
Now the things I loved about the film...
First of all, the acting. Sunny Kaushal was simply fantastic. 👏 👏 👏 On paper, you understand this guy is batshit crazy. But the way he enacted it, I actually felt bad for him. 😒 😒 😒 So kudos to him. 👍🏼 👍🏼 👍🏼
Secondly, bromance. All three of us are suckers for bromance and 70% of the film was about that. Radhika and Diana were hardly seen. It was all about Sunny and Mohit. And it's not like they were very cordial. For the longest time Gautam tries to make Jaggi realize that what he's doing is basically stalking and Kartika might not be even serious about him. In fact, there's a scene when he vents his anger on him when Ira gives him the divorce papers. But in every frame the actors complimented each other amazingly. 🤗 🤗 🤗
Thirdly, clash between different ideologies. The basic problem between Gautam and Ira was their ideology. Gautam believes the migrants to be the bad guys while Ira - a social worker/activist is very vocal about their rights and is actively participating in their welfare. So their profession brings a clash in their personal life and that could have been a wonderful story alone. Except, their story didn't get any SS. 🤔
Fourth, the two phone calls. Here I want to applaud the actors and the director for bringing out the best in them as none of the actor were facing each other. 👍🏼 👍🏼 👍🏼 When Gautam calls Kartika and asks if she's feeling guilty but Kartika expresses her confusion as who does such things and in a practical world, how the hell she is supposed to react? I felt bad for her. In the heat of the moment one might say - oh the boy is doing so much but she isn't reciprocating but she was very clear that she didn't love him. So the astonishment, confusion and dread - everything was well-portrayed. And Gautam wasn't at least blasting her. He too knew that the girl was right. He just said, you have to take a decision fast. And then comes the second phone call between Jaggi and Kartika where she says ILU to him. It was amazingly done. 👍🏼 👍🏼 👍🏼
Fifth, Mohit and Radhika in one frame. 😳 😳 😳 The title itself is self-explanatory but it was unfortunate that they met under the worst situation. 🥺 🥺 🥺 When Gautam gives her Jaggi's death news and her denial - I cried hard. 😭 😭 😭
Sixth, dialogue and background score. While some of the dialogues were too cheesy some made me crack up. There's a scene where Kartika's father locks her up and she says - 90's ki Bollywood ki heroine wali feel aa rahi hain - I laughed really hard. 🤣 🤣 🤣 And the use of BGM! When she learns about Jaggi's death, it was so... 🥺 🥺 🥺
Now the problematic aspects...
First of all, I am clueless why did Jaggi fall in love so deeply? Kartika was straightforward and didn't hide anything. Was it really love or just his infatuation as he decided he would find his soulmate too? 🤔 🤔 🤔
Secondly, one very problematic scene of the movie which everyone is talking about is, Jaggi takes a photo of Kartika, emerging from the swimming pool and without her consent, he posts it into SM. So Kartika barges into the boy's washroom and take photos of them in return. Fine, you wanted to present her as badass. But couldn't there be any other way? Not to mention she actually felt a bit aroused by Jaggi as he posed for her when she took his photos. 🤢 🤢 🤢
Third, why was she a swimmer in the first place? They could show her to be anything but they chose a sport where you would get to see the heroine in swimsuits. Matlam hadd hain. 🤬 🤬 🤬
Fourth, the immigrant route. While it's praiseworthy that they portrayed such an issue and wanted to show Jaggi in some Pagla Deewana form, was it really necessary? Fine, his visa got rejected. But he had three freaking months. And he could go to some other country and from there he could again apply for visa as a tourist. He was a national level athlete. I am sure there must be thousands of plausible and legal options. Why did they make him take this route?
Fifth, how on earth did Kartika fall in love with him? Just because he dove in the sea? Matlab kuch bhi!
Sixth, Kartika's argument with her father as he admits he had an affair but chose Kartika and ended it. She says he was weak and she and her mother would have managed without him. It's really easy to utter such words but in a real life scenario no matter how rich you are, your parents' divorce would affect you. In their attempt to glorify love, they misrepresented an extremely sensitive issue. 👎🏼 👎🏼 👎🏼
Seventh, even though they advertised it as some epic love story, the actresses hardly had any scene. It's their individual talent that they shone in those few moments. But as much as I am in for bromance, you are talking about two parallel love stories whereas we don't get to see the counterparts i.e. the actresses. 😡 😡 😡
Eighth, obviously I was pissed off when Jaggi died. I cried, literally, I cried like a disgraced monkey in those last 10 minutes. 😭 🥺 😭 🥺 😭 🥺 😭
So, tell me about your reaction based on my review. 😛
