You see, it's the unspoken of roles that women carry that our boys might not be aware of; unspoken because they reside in the past or are things you might not verbalize. For International Women's Day here is a snapshot of what I'd like my son to think about, particularly when they ask, When is International Men's Day?'--😃
A woman's love is fierce?!!
It goes without saying that we all love our children. I want to tell my boy that I loved him even before he was born the love was simply overwhelming. Also, no matter where your life takes you, a woman's love is fierce and will never ever leave you. I've jokingly threatened my kids that after death, I'll be haunting them, they'll never be rid of me.
The weaker sex'
Like it or not, there are many ways in which women are still looked at as the weaker sex.' Sure, we've made great advancements when it comes to feminism but we are still physically weaker than men and not as intimidating as some men. There have been times when I wished I was a man so I could be taken more seriously.
Women are emotional wonders
I want my boys to know that women are very emotionally strong. What we might lack in physical strength we make up for in emotional grit. Some of this might be because, from a young age, we are not told to man up' as boys are, and we are not looked down upon for crying if we're upset. I believe the very fact that, as girls, we are not ridiculed for showing our emotions and are able to expose our vulnerable side is the very reason that further down the track we are generally more emotionally tough than some men.
Feeling torn
I want my boys to know that women because we are the ones that physically carry babies and give birth are torn in ways that men usually are not. We might have ended a career to have our children and then when they're older, find it difficult to re-enter the workforce and that can be a stressful thing. Or we might have made a decision to juggle motherhood and work, leaving little ones in daycare when you'd rather be holding and loving them all day. Or others might feel so passionately about their work, they are eager to return and it doesn't mean they love you less. Still others might have no choice about work decisions and, heartbroken, they have to leave you with a carer while they keep working to help pay the rent and feel miserable because they missed seeing you take your first steps. I want my boys to know that women have very tough decisions to make that are mostly unique to women.
Today
Above all, on International Women's Day and every day I want my sons to show all the women in their life respect, for we are the lovers, the jugglers, the mothers, the diplomats, the fighters, the teachers. And, when our work is done, we are the ones we hope you will spend a lifetime dreaming of coming home to.
